True freshman Matt Maier was USC’s second leading scorer at the Mountain Pacific Invitational, scoring in every game at the tourney as the Trojans took third place last weekend. For his powerful performance, Maier has been selected as the MPSF Newcomer of the Week — the first Trojan to win the award this season.

The No. 2 USC men’s water polo team wrapped up its three-day stint in Berkeley by powering up for an 8-3 win over No. 4 Pacific in the third-place game of the Mountain Pacific Invitational. After taking their first loss of the year yesterday to host Cal, the Trojans regrouped and reloaded, piecing together a powerful defensive stand against the Tigers to improve to 9-1 overall.

The No. 2 USC men's water polo team was tagged with its first loss of 2016 after falling to host California in the semifinals of the Mountain Pacific Invitational today in Berkeley. The Trojans opened the day soundly with a strong 9-4 win over No. 7 Long Beach State to score a spot in the semis. This evening, USC and the No. 3 Golden Bears tangled for the first time this season, and Cal was able to build a lead and stave off the Trojans for a 10-8 win in this early-season test. USC is now 8-1 overall after today's action and will face Pacific in the third-place game tomorrow (Sept. 25) in Berkeley.



No. 2 USC Scores 21-4 Win Over No. 19 Santa Clara In Mountain Pacific Invite Opener

The No. 2 USC men's water polo team passed its first test of the Mountain Pacific Invitational with a well-rounded effort as 15 different Trojans scored in a 21-4 win over No. 19 Santa Clara. The win moves USC into the next segment of group play tomorrow (Sept. 24) with a 10:50 a.m. matchup against either No. 7 Long Beach State or No. 11 UC Davis to fight for a spot in the evening's semifinal bout. USC is now 7-0 overall with today's win in Berkeley.



No. 2 USC Moves Back North For Mountain Pacific Invitational

USC rolls right back up to Northern California this week, packing up its 6-0 overall record to dig into tournament action at the Mountain Pacific Invitational in Berkeley. The three-day event has the No. 2 Trojans grouped with No. 19 Santa Clara, No. 7 Long Beach State and No. 11 UC Davis. At 1 p.m. on Friday (Sept. 23) USC opens things up against the Broncos. A win there would put USC up against the 49er-Aggie winner at 10:50 a.m. on Saturday (Sept. 23) to fight for a spot in a 6 p.m. semifinal that evening. Placement games will take place on Sunday (Sept. 24) with the championships set for 2:30 p.m. preceded by a 1 p.m. third-place game.

The No. 2 USC men's water polo team rang up a key MPSF win while also snagging head coach Jovan Vavic's 500th career victory at the helm of the USC men's program with today's 8-4 decision at Stanford. The Trojans made a solid defensive stand at the Cardinal's home pool, shutting out their hosts in the first and third periods to help lock in on the road win. USC improves to 6-0 overall and takes a 1-0 start in MPSF play with the victory at Stanford's Avery Aquatic Center today.



No. 2 USC Visits The Farm For MPSF Action At No. 5 Stanford on Saturday

USC carries a 5-0 record into this week’s conference clash at Stanford, while head coach Jovan Vavic carries 499 career wins on the men’s side at USC into the MPSF matchup. The Trojans can keep their undefeated 2016 record intact while netting Vavic his 500th men’s victory if they are able to beat their hosts on Saturday. The No. 2 Trojans (5-0, 0-0 MPSF) square off against No. 5 Stanford (5-0, 0-0 MPSF) at 1 p.m. on Saturday (Sept. 13) at Avery Aquatic Center in Palo Alto. The game will be televised live on Pac-12 Los Angeles and Pac-12 Bay Area with Greg Mescall and Kevin Danna on the call.



Lachlan Edwards Named MPSF Player of the Week

Junior 2-meter man Lachlan Edwards led USC’s scoring across three wins last weekend as the Trojans picked up victories over UC Santa Barbara, Whittier and La Verne. For his high-powered scoring efforts to lead the undefeated Trojans, Edwards has been named the MPSF Player of the Week for the first time in his USC career.



No. 2 Trojans Flex Defensive Muscle In Two Wins At Inland Empire Classic

The No. 2 USC men's water polo team made themselves right at home at the Inland Empire Classic today as the Trojans posted back-to-back second-half shutouts in a dominating day's work in La Verne, Calif. USC opened up with a 27-3 win over Whittier with 14 different Trojans getting in on the scoring action. Later, USC punched up a 26-1 win over host La Verne with 12 Trojans on the scoreboard in that one, including four new contributors on the offensive end. USC now boasts a 5-0 record on the year with an MPSF road trip looming for the Trojans. USC will pay a visit to Stanford next weekend.

USC has is home opener on the docket this week, followed by a road trip to the Inland Empire for more nonconference action. The 2-0 Trojans first set up camp in home waters at Uytengsu Aquatics Center as they host No. 6 UC Santa Barbara in a 9 a.m. matchup on Saturday (Sept. 10). From there, USC will head east for a pair of games at the Inland Empire Classic. The Trojans will take on Whittier at 10:20 a.m. before facing host La Verne for a 1:20 p.m. clash on Sunday (Sept. 11) in La Verne, Calif.

The No. 2 USC men's water polo team pieced together a pair of powerful performances on opening day at the Triton Invitational. USC's 2-0 start to 2016 came with a well-balanced start to the season, as the Trojans pinned up a 14-3 win over No. 8 UC Irvine and a 16-3 victory over No. 17 Cal Baptist in La Jolla. USC had nine different scorers strike the back of the net in each game, displaying the Trojans' depth in this 2016 campaign.

USC opens its 2016 campaign from the No. 2 spot in the national rankings. The Trojans’ path to a 12th consecutive NCAA final appearance will begin this weekend in La Jolla, as USC engages in a doubleheader opening day of action on Saturday (Sept. 3) in the Triton Invitational. The Trojans’ season opener pits them against No. 8 UC Irvine in an 8:20 a.m. faceoff on Saturday. That will be followed by a 12:20 p.m. clash against No. 17 Cal Baptist as the Trojans look to get a winning start to their 2016 season.
