For the 10th time in program history, USC has staked a claim on the National Player of the Year award. Junior goalie McQuin Baron becomes the eighth Trojan to earn that honor, and the second USC goalie to be selected as the National Player of the Year by the. Baron also picks up a spot on the ACWPC All-America First Team, where he is joined by fellow junior and fellow Cutino Award finalist Blake Edwards. Five more Trojans are on the All-America list, with junior Matteo Morelli earning a place on the All-America Second Team. Two more juniors — Lachlan Edwards and Grant Stein — are on the All-America Third Team. And on the All-America Honorable Mention list are senior Nick Bell and freshman Matt Maier.

Cutino Award — collegiate water polo’s equivalent of the Heisman Trophy. For their powerful efforts in propelling the Trojans to a 12th straight appearance in the NCAA final, goalie McQuin Baron and driver Blake Edwards both find themselves in line for the game’s highest honor. Both juniors, Baron and Edwards represent the balanced strength of the USC program in 2016. Baron and Edwards’ selection as finalists make it a group of nine Trojans to have earned that honor in program history.

The Bears were the beneficiaries of some big goals in OT, crafting a lead with two goals in the final minute of the first overtime frame and pressing on to finish out an 11-8 victory and claim the 2016 national championship. USC -- in its 12th straight trip to the NCAA title match -- came up short of a possible 10th championship while the Bears claim their 14th men's crown. The Trojans wrap up 2016 with a 24-2 overall record.

For his efforts in guiding the Trojans to a 23-1 mark and yet another NCAA appearance, head coach Jovan Vavic has been named the MPSF Coach of the Year for the seventh time on the men's side and 12th overall. Freshman Matt Maier has emerged as the MPSF Newcomer of the Year -- the second Trojan ever to score that award -- to lead a cast of a program-high nine Trojans on the all-MPSF awards list. On the All-MPSF First Team list stand juniors McQuin Baron, Matteo Morelli and Grant Stein. USC's Australian brothers Blake Edwards and Lachlan Edwards have landed on the All-MPSF Second Team. And on the All-MPSF Third Team, freshman Maier is joined by senior Nick Bell, freshman Marin Dasic and junior James Walters.

The No. 1 seed in the MPSF tourney, the Trojans (20-1) are grouped with No. 4 seed Stanford (12-6) and No. 5 seeded newcomer Penn State Behrend (0-23). The winner of that group will go straight to the MPSF title match. In the opposite group, No. 2 seed UCLA (24-1) and No. 3 California (18-3) are fighting for a spot in the final. The 2016 MPSF Tournament runs Nov. 18-20 at UCLA’s Spieker Aquatics Center in Westwood. USC will open up against Stanford in a 3 p.m. matchup on Friday (Nov. 18) before taking on Penn State Behrend at 6 p.m. that evening. Two wins will ensure a trip to the MPSF championship bout, which is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday (Nov. 20), preceded by an 11 a.m. third-place game. Friday and Saturday’s games will be streamed live online, and Sunday’s placement games will both be televised on Pac-12 Networks, with Greg Mescall and Jim Watson on the call.
