Seven Trojans Earn ACWPC All-Academic Honors

Following a historic run to a 12th consecutive NCAA title match, the USC men’s water polo team has landed a bumper crop of Trojans on the academic honor roll for 2016. Seven Trojans have earned a place on the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches All-Academic award list — the most for USC since the ACWPC awards began in 2007.

The USC men’s water polo program grows two Trojans stronger this week with the addition of Christian Emerson and Marko Vavic as signees to Troy for 2017. USC head coach Jovan Vavic, who has guided the USC men to 12 consecutive NCAA finals and a grand total of nine national championships, announced the addition of the two newcomers today (Feb. 2).

After a run to the NCAA final for the 12th consecutive season, seven members of the USC men’s water polo team have shown they are working as hard in the classroom as they are in the pool. USC had piled seven Trojans on the MPSF All-Academic Scholar-Athlete honor roll, including five standouts boasting over a 3.5 cumulative GPA.

National Player of the Year McQuin Baron Leads Seven Trojan All-Americans

After a 24-2 season that saw the Trojans win the MPSF Championship and roll up their 12th consecutive trip to the NCAA final, USC men’s water polo locks in with seven Trojans on the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches All-America list for 2016. For the 10th time in program history, USC has staked a claim on the National Player of the Year award. Junior goalie McQuin Baron becomes the eighth Trojan to earn that honor, and the second USC goalie to be selected as the National Player of the Year by the. Baron also picks up a spot on the ACWPC All-America First Team, where he is joined by fellow junior and fellow Cutino Award finalist Blake Edwards. Five more Trojans are on the All-America list, with junior Matteo Morelli earning a place on the All-America Second Team. Two more juniors — Lachlan Edwards and Grant Stein — are on the All-America Third Team. And on the All-America Honorable Mention list are senior Nick Bell and freshman Matt Maier.

For the second time in program history, the USC men’s water polo team has doubled up on finalists for the prestigious Peter J. Cutino Award — collegiate water polo’s equivalent of the Heisman Trophy. For their powerful efforts in propelling the Trojans to a 12th straight appearance in the NCAA final, goalie McQuin Baron and driver Blake Edwards both find themselves in line for the game’s highest honor. Both juniors, Baron and Edwards represent the balanced strength of the USC program in 2016. Baron and Edwards’ selection as finalists make it a group of nine Trojans to have earned that honor in program history.

USC Falls In Overtime In NCAA Championship Game

The USC men's water polo team saw a two-goal advantage melt away as host California forced today's NCAA Championship bout into overtime. The Bears were the beneficiaries of some big goals in OT, crafting a lead with two goals in the final minute of the first overtime frame and pressing on to finish out an 11-8 victory and claim the 2016 national championship. USC -- in its 12th straight trip to the NCAA title match -- came up short of a possible 10th championship while the Bears claim their 14th men's crown. The Trojans wrap up 2016 with a 24-2 overall record.

With a 23-1 overall record, the Trojans are on the prowl for a 10th NCAA championship for the USC men's program, which has made 11 consecutive trips to the NCAA title match while collecting seven crowns in that run. The No. 1 team in the nation, USC is set up with an NCAA semifinal spot, awaiting its opponent for that semi -- set for 3 p.m. on Saturday (Dec. 3) 3 at Spieker Aquatics Complex in Berkeley. The 2016 national championship game will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday (Dec. 4). Both days will have games live streamed at with Kevin Danna and Greg Mescall on the calls.
