Thu, 29 Sep 2016 12:30:00 EDTThe USC men’s tennis team is off to Tulsa, Okla., this week for a stretch of elite competition at the 2016 Saint Francis Health System ITA Men’s All-American Championships. The singles and doubles assignments are set, with prequalifying action coming up on Saturday (Oct. 1). Qualifying rounds are slated to begin Oct. 3, and the main draw kicks off Oct. 6 and runs through the championship bouts on Oct. 10. In all, eight of the nine Trojans heading into Tulsa will be making their debuts at the ITA All-American as only senior Nick Crystal has played at the event before.
Sun, 25 Sep 2016 22:44:00 EDTThe USC men's tennis team divided and conquered this weekend, splitting up for action in Louisiana and Northern California as the fall stretch of individual action continues for the Trojans. Four Trojans engaged in action in San Francisco at the Battle in the Bay, while four more took the trip to Louisiana for the John Breaux Tennis Classic. It was tough competition in both spots, but the most successful Trojan of the all emerged from San Francisco, where senior Rob Bellamy claimed the singles title with a stretch of four wins, including a gutsy three-setter in the title match.

Singles and doubles play was on the docket for seniors Nick Crystal and Rob Bellamy along with sophomore Logan Smith and freshman Riley Smith as the Trojans convened in Napa from Sept. 16-18 for the first competition of the fall.

Farah, a native of Colombia, is lined up for action in the 2016 Olympic doubles draw. Johnson, meanwhile, has scored slots in both singles and doubles as a member of Team USA. They are the first USC men’s tennis Olympians since Wayne Black represented Zimbabwe in doubles in the 2004 Games in Athens. Black also is the last Trojan to play in singles in the Olympics, having done so in 2000 in Sydney. USC men’s tennis now has a count of seven Trojans to play in the Olympic Games, having now represented Troy in six different Games dating back to Rafael Osuna’s doubles gold medal in 1968 Mexico City.

On the men’s side, senior Max de Vroome is an ITA Scholar-Athlete, joining USC women Gabby Smith, Rianna Valdes, Kristen Venter, Madison Westby and Meredith Xepoleas.

Recently, both Farah and Johnson dug in for powerful performances on the grass courts at Wimbledon. Farah reached the mixed doubles final, while Johnson turned heads with a run to the singles Round of 16. Both efforts were the best of their respective pro careers at a Grand Slam.
