2019 Lamborghini Aventador S Roadster First Drive Review: Refined bull

Wed, 25 Apr 2018 09:01:00 EDT

(image) The Aventador still reminds us of the days when supercars weren't so tractable and obedient, but rather wild, snorting and more than a bit daunting to drive fast. As a rolling expression of excess, it's hard not to fall for the open-air Aventador S's naturally aspirated scream for attention.

Lamborghini confirms next-gen Aventador and Huracan to be PHEVs

Tue, 24 Apr 2018 08:20:00 EDT

(image) It's official, Lamborghini CEO Stefano Domenicali confirmed to Top Gear magazine that the next-generation Aventador and Huracán will get plug-in hybrid powertrains. Autocar reported last October that the next Huracán would get "next-generation" batteries to aid its naturally aspirated V10 when it debuts around 2022. The fate of the Aventador S's successor, however, was unclear beyond the certainty of it featuring a mid-mounted V12. Now we know it will get a naturally aspirated V12

Jaguar may kill supercharged V6 to make way for inline-six

Mon, 23 Apr 2018 17:40:00 EDT

(image) This could be the last year to score a Jaguar with the carmaker's 3.0-liter supercharged V6. Autocar reports that Jaguar deep-sixed the XE S and XF S in the UK due to poor sales and difficulty coping with European emissions regulation changes taking place this year. The mag expects the XJ and F-Pace to lose the V6, too, but suspects the F-Type might retain the engine. It's possible, however, the bent-six with up to 380 horsepower and 339 pound-feet of torque might finally be retiring for a reaso

Memminger Roadster 2.7 is the ultimate VW Beetle

Fri, 20 Apr 2018 15:05:00 EDT

(image) As charming and cute as classic Volkswagen Beetles are, there's no getting around the fact that they're not especially sleek, nor are fast. At all. That is with the exception of this, the Memminger Roadster 2.7. It's a custom Bug built by a German restoration shop called Memminger. It's low, it has extremely wide, pumped up fenders, and has been turned into a two-seat roadster. It almost looks like a Porsche 356, but bigger. And check out those sweet plaid seats.

2019 BMW Z4 spied with the top down and interior mostly uncovered

Wed, 18 Apr 2018 16:10:00 EDT

(image) The weather must be getting nice in Germany, because BMW is testing Z4 prototypes at the Nürburgring with the top down. And we're not sure if it's the nice weather or something else, but BMW has also become more lax with interior camouflage. This particular prototype hardly had anything covered, allowing us to see the production-ready interior.

Ford Mustang fans refuse to let a little snow spoil a birthday party

Tue, 17 Apr 2018 17:29:00 EDT

(image) The Ford Mustang turns 54 today. Despite being well into middle age, passion for the Mustang and all its variants and offshoots has never been stronger. Sure, the sales figures can tell you a lot. Ford sold 125,809 last year, more than any other sports coupe in the world. But that number doesn't say it all. Really, it takes just one visit to your local cars and coffee or a snowy celebration at Ford World Headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan, to see what I mean.

New Porsche Boxster Spyder spied testing on the Nurburgring

Mon, 16 Apr 2018 17:15:00 EDT

(image) The upcoming Porsche 718 Boxster Spyder has been spied testing on the Nürburgring. The last time we posted spy shots of the Spyder was in January, a cold time of the year to flaunt its new bikini top above the shapely engine cover. This time around, the Spyder's lapping the famous German race track, looking very production ready.

KTM finally ready to sell complete X-Bow racers in America

Mon, 16 Apr 2018 13:55:00 EDT

(image) A couple years back we wrote about KTM's intent to sell the mad, mad X-Bow trackday special as a complete vehicle in the United States. The X-Bow has been available in the U.S. since 2011, but buying them has been a two-part affair: first you'd buy the car, and then the engine, and you'd have to combine them yourself instead of KTM handing them over together as a functioning car. That arrangement was there because the X-Bow hasn't met federal crash standards. Finally that step can be skipped, bu

Mazda Hot Lap Challenge will put simulator drivers in real Miatas

Mon, 16 Apr 2018 10:30:00 EDT

(image) Using a video game as a feeder racing series is nothing new. Sony and Nissan have run the GT Academy for years now, rewarding the best Gran Turismo players with the chance to drive a real car. It seems Mazda wants a piece of the action. This year, it will host an iRacing Hot Lap Challenge, giving the best players a trip to the 2019 Rolex 24 at Daytona. The two fastest drivers will race head-to-head, with the winner earning a test drive in a Mazda MX-5 Miata Cup car.

McLaren 570S Spider Canada Commission is for our northern neighbors

Fri, 13 Apr 2018 15:15:00 EDT

(image) McLaren's MSO custom division seems to stay quite busy. Every few months they seem to have a new special configuration to offer buyers. Sometimes they're a bit silly or unimpressive, but other times they create something really unique and cool. This McLaren 570S Spider falls into the latter category. It's called the Canada Commission, and the company will build just five of them exclusively for our northern neighbors.

Custom Toyota FJ Cruiser convertible could be yours

Fri, 13 Apr 2018 10:45:00 EDT

(image) Toyota's FJ Cruiser SUV ticked off most of the boxes the original FJ40 Land Cruiser did. It had two-door styling (thanks to hidden half-doors) and plenty of off-road capability from a traditional four-wheel-drive system and good ground clearance. But unlike the FJ40, the Cruiser never had a convertible option. At least one person decided that was necessary and had one converted to a convertible sometime in its life, and now it could be yours.

Porsche 911 Speedster spied looking like a drop-top GT3

Wed, 11 Apr 2018 17:32:00 EDT

(image) The last Porsche 911 Speedster capped off the old 997-generation 911. It was basically a convertible Carrera GTS with a slight humpback and a number of performance and styling changes. A new Speedster has been rumored to be in the works for a while. These new spy photos show that Porsche is indeed working on a new drop-top 911, and it looks far more GT3 than GTS.

What a 181-horsepower 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata means for us, and you

Mon, 09 Apr 2018 14:34:00 EDT

(image) Last month, we reported on a VIN filing dug up by Road & Track that showed that the 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata's 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G engine would get a power bump, from 155 to 181 net horsepower. As for how the 2019 Miata would make that extra power, we heard rumors it'd utilize a new cylinder head allowing higher revs, accounting for that extra power. Now we have what appears to be a leaked document from Mazda Canada showing exactly where that extra power comes from.

Like most midcycle refreshes, there aren't many major mechanical changes, though there is the addition of a new model. Unlike most midcycle refreshes, the exterior has been given a pretty drastic overhaul.

Acura NSX roadster finally on its way this year?

Mon, 09 Apr 2018 08:20:00 EDT

(image) Autobild put together a slideshow forecasting various convertibles due to arrive from 2018 to 2023. The long-prophesied Acura NSX Roadster graced the first slide, reportedly prepped for market launch later this year at a price of 200,000 euros. That's about 13,000 euros more spendy than the hardtop, a relative bargain. Don't call your Goldman private banker yet, though — that Autobild slide is likely as close as any of us will get to said roadster this year.

Sunday Drive: Rendering the future at Jeep and Ford

Sun, 08 Apr 2018 12:00:00 EDT

(image) Last week brought us quite a wide variety of automotive news nuggets, and judging by the response of our own readership, the Jeep Wrangler pickup truck led the way. It's not expected to hit the sales floor until April of 2019, which means we've all got an entire year to wait, but that just means we have lots of time to anticipate its arrival. And we do so today with a series of renderings that show what the so-called Scrambler may look like in a few different colors.
