Sister of Nate Parker’s Accuser: Why Art Shouldn’t Be Separated From Artist

Sat, 16 Dec 2017 08:53:42 GMT

Sharon Loeffler, the sister of the woman who accused Nate Parker and his Birth of a Nation co-writer Jean Celestin of rape in 1999, spoke to Variety's Gene Maddaus about why art shouldn’t be separated from artist.

- Sharon says the turning point in her life was when she talked to a reporter about how brave her sister was testifying against two college athletes, to only be then attacked on the stand and eventually forced to drop out of school. Sharon adds that her sister felt betrayed and that the system failed her, when Parker was acquitted and Celestin’s conviction was overturned on a technicality.

- She says the reason why she had to speak up for her sister was her bravery, because while Nate Parker was building a career in Hollywood, her sister's depression led her take her own life in 2012.

- Sharon suggests that "Hollywood has always looked the other way when it comes to sexual misconduct. When disturbing stories emerge, we are told to separate the art from the artist. Even last year, the president of the Academy urged people to go see The Birth of a Nation and consider it independently of the director’s past."

- She continues by saying that asking people to ignore an artist’s misconducts to only focus on the art equals protecting that artist’s career from the consequences of their actions. She hopes that The Birth of a Nation's poor reception at the Box Office and among Oscar voters, people have started to realize that kind of thinking won’t cut it anymore. She states that "the consequences have to be real. No one should get a pass, no matter how powerful or successful or brilliant or talented. No one."

- Sharon says that seeing all those powerful men fall every week is far too late for her sister, because only now people are starting to take women’s allegations seriously. She knows how hard it must be for all those women to come forward, not knowing if they’ll even be believed. She knows they risk humiliation and that possibly their voice won’t matter — while watching their perpetrators moves on like nothing ever happened.

- She concludes by saying how proud she is of her sister and all the risks she took while being just 18 years old. Sharon believes her sister started this revolution and hopes that it will result in women being safer in the workplace, dorm rooms and everywhere else. She wishes her sister was here to witness this moment, but that her son — Sharon's nephew — can see it. She's glad that "he can know that his mother was brave and strong, and in her too short life, she left a lasting legacy."

OP's note: Thought it deserved its own post since Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks' tone-deaf comments about the issue. I'm actually disappointed, not surprised, this piece hasn't been picked up by other major online publications.

Hollywood Trying To Sue The Shit Out Of Canadians

Sat, 16 Dec 2017 06:20:53 GMT

-American production company, Voltage Pictures, is currently engaging in a "reverse class action lawsuit" targeting Canadian citizens they claim have illegally downloaded their film, Dallas Buyer's Club, which stars Matthew McConaughey.

-They tried this in 2012 but withdrew their suit and now they're at it again - it's a first of it's kind case in Canada.

-Tens of thousands of Canadians could potentially get wrapped up in this scummy bullshit.

-According to one expert at the source:

“What Voltage effectively wants to do is create a cheap little troll machine that churns out settlements cheaper than a federal court case, cheaper than any mechanism you can imagine."

-The source article goes into all the legal complexities and ramifications of this and what it means for Canadians (I highly suggest ONTDers go and read it!).

-People have been posting on reddit in the r/Canada sub saying they've gotten notifications that they're named in a lawsuit even though they insist they've never downloaded the movie (some claiming they've never even heard of the film honestly...who!?)

Fuck off Hollywood, we're poor!

Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep talk about separating art from the artist

Sat, 16 Dec 2017 05:37:03 GMT

Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks debate whether art can be separated from the artist

— BuzzFeed (@BuzzFeed) December 12, 2017

- Tom Hanks and Meryl Africa stopped by Buzzfeed to talk about The Post and other stuff. They spared over the high profile abuse cases coming to light in Hollywood
- Tom on predators in Hollywood: “If you threw out every film or TV show that was made by an a–hole, Netflix would go out of business,”
- M Africa on the subject: "People who are terrible also have terribly clear insights on other subjects, so I don't think you throw the baby out with the bathwater."She also decided to use the ole Shakespeare comparison. I'm not surprised at her comments considering she's friends with Lena Dunham.

Teaser for PBS's "Little Women" miniseries

Sat, 16 Dec 2017 05:35:54 GMT

- Based on Louisa May Alcott's bestselling classic, Little Women is about the four March sisters as they go through life and find love, heartbreak, and don't have to put up with the bullshit tax on feminine products that we have today.
- Uniquely British this time, featuring Emily Watson and Angela Lansbury. Previous adaptations featured *deep breath* Katherine Hepburn, Winona Ryder, June Allyson, Janet Leigh, Elizabeth Taylor, Susan Sarandon, Kirsten Dunst, Claire Danes, Mary Astor, Christian Bale, Peter Lawford, Mary Wickes, Samantha Mathis, Margaret O'Brien, Gabriel Byrne, and Eric Stoltz.
- Louisa May Alcott infamously hated the diabetes-inducing book, but needed cash. She also introduced one of the first recorded cases of shipping with Jo and Laurie...which made history when she essentially trolled her fan base.

Well hello guy playing Laurie...competition with CBale and Lawford.
which March girl is your favorite?

Alyssa Milano SCHOOLS Matt Damon on rape culture

Sat, 16 Dec 2017 04:23:29 GMT

Alyssa Milano is not here for Matt Demon's twisted views and unwanted opinions on sexual assault against women. She has some choice words for him.

Dear Matt Damon,

It’s the micro that makes the macro. We are in a “culture of outrage” because the magnitude of rage is, in fact, overtly outrageous. And it is righteous.

I have been a victim of each component of the sexual assault spectrum of which you speak. They all hurt. And they are all connected to a patriarchy intertwined with normalized, accepted--even welcomed-- misogyny.

We are not outraged because someone grabbed our asses in a picture. We are outraged because we were made to feel this was normal. We are outraged because we have been gaslighted. We are outraged because we were silenced for so long.

There are different stages of cancer. Some more treatable than others. But it’s still cancer.

Sexual harassment, misconduct, assault and violence is a systemic disease. The tumor is being cut out right now with no anesthesia. Please send flowers. #MeToo

Ronan Farrow on his Father Woody Allen Getting a Pass by Hollywood

    Fri, 15 Dec 2017 23:35:28 GMT

Ronan Farrow, whose bombshell expose of Harvey Weinstein in The New Yorker broke open the floodgates of famous men finally being held accountable for sexual harassment, was questioned by a paparazzo from TMZ about his father, Woody Allen, still getting a pass from Hollywood (despite the allegations by his daughter Dylan that he sexually assaulted her when she was seven years old):

I think that there are a lot of areas where we could have more accountability and it hasn't happened yet. Listen, I always say: listen to the actual survivors, people with allegations. My sister actually just came forward and wrote an Op-Ed in the L.A. Times about that, so I'd point you to that.

(ICYMI, you can read Dylan Farrow's Op-Ed here)

The TMZ pap says "People keep working with him" and Farrow responds:

And for years, people who knew a lot about the Harvey Weinstein allegations kept working with him. Until someone is no longer a source of power and capital and prestige, people are always going to go for the money and go for the power and work with people.

    Dylan Farrow Thanks ONTD!

    Fri, 15 Dec 2017 22:23:49 GMT

Dylan has been speaking publicly about being sexually abused by her father, Woody Allen, when she was seven years old, and about Hollywood continuing to support him and his films.

Jon Bernthal interview: The Punisher actor talks Shot Caller, The Walking Dead, and authenticity

    Fri, 15 Dec 2017 21:43:17 GMT

    - On the Walking Dead: He has not kept up with the show, but says his role as Shane changed his life. "To play a character with a real beginning and end, on a show that popular, that was an unbelievable part. It wasn’t like I was inundated with offers after, but that was the experience that changed my life. Who went home on the second episode of Top Chef: Colorado?

    Fri, 15 Dec 2017 21:43:05 GMT

Quickfire challenge: This episode's challenge was the classic mise en place relay race. The cheftestants were split into two teams (Green and Blue), and they had to complete three tasks: peel and finely dice a qt. of shallots, peel and slice a qt. of mushrooms, and clean and portion 20 pieces of beef tenderloin. The teams could assign any number of chefs to each task, but each chef could only do one task. The winning team of the race would then complete against each other to win the quickfire. The winning chef won $5,000 and dinner for a year from the sponsor.

    Quickfire winner:

The Blue Team won the relay and Joe here was the overall winner

Elimination challenge: The teams from the quickfire stayed in place, and they had to create a four course meal that highlighted four chesses from a local farm.

    Challenge winner:
Green Team won (though it also had the worst dish of the day, Tu's), but the overall winner was...

(After trying to save herself by throwing her dish mate under the bus, which is always a classy move)

Challenge: Claudette had to complete against current survivors Lee Ann, Kwame, and our dear friend, Marcel, to create a dish with curds, whey, and... canned tarantulas. Because those are a thing.

    Challenge winner:

    Marcel =(
(I felt kinda bad, tbh. He looked like he was about to cry.)

Hosea was on next week's promo, y'all. Apparently, having garbage as a guest judge (?) is something Top Chef thinks we want to see.

Minnie Driver has some words for Matt Damon

    Fri, 15 Dec 2017 21:42:31 GMT

God God, SERIOUSLY?— Minnie Driver (@driverminnie) 15 de dezembro de 2017Gosh it’s so *interesting how men with all these opinions about women’s differentiation between sexual misconduct, assault and rape reveal themselves to be utterly tone deaf and as a result, systemically part of the problem( *profoundly unsurprising)— Minnie Driver (@driverminnie) 15 de dezembro de 2017Follow-up to THIS POST- ICYMI, Matt Damon (friend of groper Ben Affleck and alleged sexual harasser Casey Affleck), gave an interview wherein defends Al Franken because "a pat in the butt" isn't so bad as rape and nobody's perfect, doesn't think he should have resigned. Although he hasn't really looked into what Louis CK has been accused of, he says it was "gross and shameful" but "not criminal", read his apology and thought it was great, thinks that he won't be doing those things again and that Louis has been punished enough. Thinks that people are "ruining the lives" of sexual assaulters like Louis CK by not forgiving them and that it just encourages men not to admit to having sexually assaulted women. (READ THE INTERVIEW HERE)- Minnie Driver (his ex-gf with whom he broke up on national tv) isn't having it. She's also dragging people who are defending Demon on her mentionsLook , weather you’re joking or not - women being worried about weather powerful men in my industry will still give them work if they speak up is part of the bloody problem.— Minnie Driver (@driverminnie) 15 de dezembro de 2017Oh PLEASE. Spare me your indignation. Just accept that for once , where WOMEN BEING SEXUALLY ASSAULTED is concerned, your opinion matters LESS.— Minnie Driver (@driverminnie) 15 de dezembro de 2017sources 1 2 3 4[...]

Mark Hamill & Carrie Fisher once "made out like teenagers"

    Fri, 15 Dec 2017 20:48:02 GMT

    • During the filming of the first Star Wars movies, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher started talking about his kissing techniques.  They had become close friends during filming, and they were attracted to each other, but he "knew from previous jobs that it would have been a bad idea [to get involved with someone on set]."

    • Mark Hamill just revealed that one time, when alcohol was involved, he said, "Well, I think I’m a fairly good kisser. I like to let the women come to me rather than be aggressive." And she said: "What do you mean?"  Next, they were "making out like teenagers."

    • Hamill says, "We were all over each other!  But the one thing that drew Carrie and me back from the precipice was we kind of became aware of what we were doing and just burst out laughing.  Which was unfortunate for me because the rocket launch sequence had been initiated."

    • After they got their make out session “out of our system,” he says, they became lifelong friends.

    • They became like siblings because "she had so many friends and I’d go to parties with her and I would be the only one there I’d never heard of. But there was a comfort level that we’d achieved because she knew I wasn’t ever angling for a favour or trying to get her to introduce me to this agent or this director."  He says, "Whenever I was on set, I would go straight to her trailer with my dog and hang out with her and her dog."

    • He says his crush on her never went away, and he's happy he didn't learn of her affair with Harrison Ford until after the movies had finished filming.  "I'm glad I didn't know before, as it probably really would have affected me. By the time I found out, I just thought it was hilarious."

Does Riverdale Need to Tone Down the "Darkness"?

    Fri, 15 Dec 2017 20:45:36 GMT

-This article says the show, which just aired its season two mid-season finale, is having an "identity crisis", flip flops between being a fun and soapy teen drama and the television equivalent of the word "edgelord"
-The wrap up of the Black Hood saga was a letdown to fans and critics alike, and the insistence of the show playing up its horror tropes all season was divisive
-Showrunner and head writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa originally pitched the show as a "coming-of-age" story before CW producer Greg Berlanti wanted it to be edgier
-Article recalls the success of WB teen dramas like Dawson's Creek and Everwood that focused on telling more grounded stories and developing its characters
-With the Black Hood saga done, the show is free to explore its characters deeper, focusing on interpersonal relationships/friendships, family drama, and general high school coming-of-age stuff with mysteries/nostalgia factor serving as the backdrop

Do you think Riverdale can save itself, or is it doomed to suffer the same fate as the once holy Gossip Girl? All I know is I'm gonna be watching the second half of season 2 like this:

Murderous teen rapper Tay-K signs a record deal from behind bars

    Fri, 15 Dec 2017 20:22:47 GMT

Tay-K rose to prominence with his hit song "The Race" about being on the run from the law. It was made and released while the then-16 year old Tay-K was a fugitive for months after cutting his ankle monitor off during house arrest for his first murder charge.

Fuck a beat, I was tryna beat a case

But I ain't beat that case, bitch I did the race
Beat it up, where I nut? Shorty face
Eli blast crackin' 4s like a vase
Pop a nigga then I go out my way
Do the dash then I go out the way

I woke up too moody, who gon' die today?
Shoot a fuckboy in his motherfuckin' face

While he was on the lam, he was reportedly involved in another murder and at least one assault case where he robbed and beat an old man nearly to death. It appears the murder charges he's facing will not be enough to slow down his music career as he was recently signed to the record label 88 Classic, which is owned by the Senior Vice President of A&R & Marketing at RCA, from jail.

In other wonderful soundcloud rap news, Tekashi 6ix9ine, who pled guilty to three felony counts of using a child in a sexual performance, has been having more success than ever and his song hit a new peak at #13 on the Billboard Hot 100.
