Welcome to episode #564 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast.  Here it is: Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast - Episode #564 - Host: Mitch Joel. Piers Fawkes spends - what seems like - an awesome amount of time searching out trends, building data, publishing reports and curating news from around the world. There is a focus and his work does split off into business related verticals like design, travel, retail, advertising and more. Still his daily e-newsletters provide a vast swath of perspective, ideas and demonstrates the true creativity in business of our world today. I have long been a fan of his company, PSFK. SPOS #563 - Virtual, Augmented And Mixed Reality With Shel Israel And Robert Scoble

Sun, 23 Apr 2017 05:27:38 -0500

Welcome to episode #563 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast.  Here it is: Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast - Episode #563 - Host: Mitch Joel. The future of us humans connecting to technology will not be about the web or mobile. It will all take place in some kind of virtual reality. That future is happening faster than most of us would care to admit. Whether it will be virtual, augmented or mixed reality... that is yet to be defined. We're at that unique moment in time. Remember when we were not sure if the web was going to be called the Internet, the information superhighway, the web, etc...? Two thinkers and doers on this, exact, subject are Shel Israel and Robert Scoble. They have teamed up (again) to co-author their latest business book, The Fourth Transformation -- How Augmented Reality and Artificial Intelligence Will Change Everything. The book looks (deeply and intelligently) at what we're in the midst of right now, and where technology is really taking us. In fact, they're so bullish on this space, that they've partnered to launch a consultancy business called, Transformation Group. With that, many will also recognize these two digital futurists as the co-authors of Naked Conversations and Age Of Context. Enjoy the conversation... Running time: 53:42. SPOS #562 - The Business Of Addictive Technology With Adam Alter

Sun, 16 Apr 2017 05:11:15 -0500

Welcome to episode #562 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast.  Here it is: Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast - Episode #562 - Host: Mitch Joel. When a business and marketing professional asks me which thinker and author they should be paying more attention to, I immediately respond with Adam Alter. His first book, Drunk Tank Pink, was a fascinating journey into the relationship between the forces of our environment and how it shapes the outcomes of our lives. His latest book, Irresistible, looks at how addictive all of our technology is, and why businesses need for it to be this way (and how they keep us hooked). Adam is an Associate Professor of marketing and psychology at NYU's Stern School of Business and psychology department. His research focuses on the intersection of behavioral economics, marketing, and the psychology of judgment and decision-making. He's also an all-around nice guy. So, put your iPhone down and enjoy the conversation... Running time: 50:32. Hello from beautiful Montreal. Subscribe over at iTunes. SPOS #560 - The Infinite Dial With Tom Webster

Sun, 02 Apr 2017 04:57:10 -0500

Welcome to episode #560 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast.  Here it is: Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast - Episode #560 - Host: Mitch Joel. Beyond the fact that I enjoy the vast amount of time that I get to personally spend with Tom Webster, he also happens to be one of the smartest (and most sarcastic) brains that I know (and love). He has spent well over two decades telling stories with numbers about consumer behaviour and media as the VP of Strategy at Edison Research (the company that provides all of the exit polling data for the networks during the U.S. elections and primaries). At Edison, he's also one of leads behind their long-standing, The Infinite Dial report, which is the longest-running research series examining consumer usage of digital and traditional media in America. Their 2017 report had some massive shifts, that make for a fascinating chat about the current state of media and future opportunities. With that, Tom is also the co-author of The Mobile Commerce Revolution, with Tim Hayden, and directed the research behind Jay Baer's bestselling business book, Hug Your Haters. If that were not enough, he blogs at Brand Savant and has a long-standing podcast that he co-hosts with Mark W. Schaefer called, The Marketing Companion. Enjoy the conversation... SPOS #559 - The Value Of Personal Branding With Mark W. Schaefer

Sun, 26 Mar 2017 05:19:24 -0500

Welcome to episode #559 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast.  Here it is: Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast - Episode #559 - Host: Mitch Joel. Some might say that Mark Schaefer was late to the game when it comes to social media and personal brand building. Still, in short order, he has built a substantive and valuable personal platform and engaged community. Mark is still an avid blogger (like me). He is a podcaster (check out The Marketing Companion). He is a professor of marketing at Rutgers. He is an active consultant. Mark is a passionate communicator about how marketing has changed, and where he thinks it's all going. He's written many successful business books (Return On Influence, The Tao Of Twitter, Born To Blog, Social Media Explained and The Content Code) and brings a wealth of real life experience to the discussion. His latest book, Known, digs deep into his blueprint for how individuals (and businesses) can use content to become more known to a broader audience and grow their customer base. Some might think that a new business book on the topic of personal branding in 2017 is a little after-the-fact (I did). Mark thinks he's tapped into something new and unique (he changed my mind). Enjoy the conversation... Running time: 52:40. Hello from beautiful Montreal. Subscribe over at iTunes. Please visit and leave comments on the blog - Six Pixels of Separation. SPOS #558 - Winning Body Language With Mark Bowden

Sun, 19 Mar 2017 05:21:13 -0500

Welcome to episode #558 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast.  Here it is: Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast - Episode #558 - Host: Mitch Joel. Whether it's online, in person or just consuming his content, I always enjoy the time I spend with Mark Bowden. He's perfectly engaging, entertaining and there's always something to learn. There is this powerful notion that success comes not from what we say, but what we do and how we say it. The power of communications can never be questioned. Especially, when you work in the world of marketing and advertising. Few people truly have the expertise of Mark Bowden. He has developed cutting-edge techniques to stand out, win trust and grow profits through the power of communication. Some would call him a body language expert. I believe he is much more than that. He runs a company called Truthplane. He's written the bestselling business books Winning Body Language, Winning Body Language for Sales Professionals and Tame the Primitive Brain. Mark is also the co-creator of online course, Presentation Genius. Mark has a highly viewed TEDx talk and his YouTube Channel has over 1 million views. Enjoy the conversation... Running time: 57:16. SPOS #557 - Douglas Rushkoff Debates Media, Technology And Politics

Sun, 12 Mar 2017 05:17:39 -0500

Welcome to episode #557 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast.  Here it is: Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast - Episode #557 - Host: Mitch Joel. When the state of media, news, broadcasting and digital channels creates more confusion than better solutions, there are few big brains I'd rather sit and discuss this with than Douglas Rushkoff. Simply put: Douglas Rushkoff makes my brain hurt, because he is so smart. His latest book, Throwing Rocks At The Google Bus, is about to come out on paperback, and it will make your head spin too. Not to be a contrarian for contrarian's sake, this Media Theorist also happens to understand the underpinnings of the news business, politics, economics, and his thinking will startle you. Regardless of where you sit on the political spectrum or how you feel about "fake news" this will make you think deeply. Rushkoff (for those who do not know) is the person responsible for coining terms like 'digital natives', 'social currency' and 'viral media'. If you've never heard of Rushkoff, he's the winner of the Media Ecology Association's first Neil Postman award for Career Achievement in Public Intellectual Activity, he is an author, teacher, and documentarian who focuses on the ways people, cultures, and institutions create, share, and influence each other's values. He is Professor of Media Theory and Digital Economics at CUNY, technology and media commentator for CNN, digital literacy advocate for Codecademy.com and a lecturer on media, technology, culture and economics around the world. If that's not enough, he recently published a graphic novel titled, Aleister & Adolf. Enjoy the conversation...  Running time: 55:14. Hello from beautiful Montreal. Subscribe over at iTunes. Sun, 05 Mar 2017 05:32:27 -0500

Welcome to episode #556 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast.  Here it is: Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast - Episode #556 - Host: Mitch Joel. He has one of the most profoundly powerful stories about how to grow a complex (and regional) business using everything from social media to marketing automation. It has worked so well for him, that he went from selling swimming pools (which he still does) to helping other businesses understand how to leverage this amazing moment in time to grow a business (which he spends the bulk of his work time on). Marcus Sheridan is an incredible human being. Not just because of how he transformed River Pools And Spas into a thriving business during economically challenging times, but how he morphed that into The Sales Lion. Now, he's published his first business book, They Ask You Answer, in which he breaks down how inbound sales, content marketing and the digital channels can help your brand flourish. He's an amazing speaker and passionate entrepreneur. I count myself lucky that I can call him a friend as well. Enjoy the conversation...  Running time: 55:25. Hello from beautiful Montreal. Welcome to episode #554 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast.  Here it is: Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast - Episode #554 - Host: Mitch Joel. Sometimes, in life, you get lucky. You meet someone that you have always admired, and you become fast friends. I've been with my talent bureau for over a decade (hey Speaker's Spotlight). Each year they have a holiday party for staff, speakers and friends. I always have the best of intentions to go, but I've never been. This past December, I finally went. While standing in the darkish and loud office space, Neil Pasricha came over and introduced himself. I've known about Neil for a long while. I knew him as the hugely popular #1 bestselling author of The Book Of Awesome and The Happiness Equation. I knew him as one of the most popular TED speakers in the world. I knew him, because he used to work at Walmart in their leadership development division (and Walmart was a client of Mirum). I knew him as a very popular speaker on the topic of happiness, authenticity and living a life with meaning. Still, we never had the chance to connect - one-on-one and in our protein forms. Until now. Neil is also known for his blog (that started this all) called, 1000 Awesome Things. Now, he's focused on The Institute For Global Happiness and recently gave a brand new (and awesome) TED Talk called, How do you maximize your tiny, short life? Enjoy the conversation...  Running time: 1:05:59. Hello from beautiful Montreal. Subscribe over at iTunes. Please visit and leave comments on the blog - Six Pixels of Separation. Welcome to episode #553 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast.  Here it is: Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast - Episode #553 - Host: Mitch Joel. James Altucher is one of the best non-fiction writers that I know. He writes quality. He writes quantity. He has a lot of material. He is a trader, investor, writer, and entrepreneur. His bio is an impressive one. He was an investor in Buddy Media (which sold to Salesforce for about $800 million) as well as bitly. His latest book is called, Reinvent Yourself, and it's a great read. He's written over 15 other books (most of them are bestsellers). He has a podcast that is insanely popular called, The James Altucher Show. Also, if you're not following his writing, The Altucher Confidential, you don't know what you're missing. Last years, James sold everything he had in New York City and became a true digital nomad and minimalist. He's got some opinions on a lot of different topics. SPOS #550 - The Quiet Revolution With Susan Cain

Sun, 22 Jan 2017 05:06:04 -0500

Welcome to episode #550 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast.  Here it is: Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast - Episode #550 - Host: Mitch Joel. How do you operate in teams and groups? Do you feel like an insider or an outsider? Do you like the open-floor concept at the office? Do you have kids? Are people constantly pushing to get them to "come out of their shell"? Like to spend time alone and read? Like private time to do your work on your own? Do you think that collaboration is over-rated? Would you rather spend time alone than out at a networking event? My friend, Susan Cain, built momentum on her incredibly popular book, Quiet - The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking, and a massive TED Talk, The Power Of Introverts, that has been viewed close to 16 million times. Here's the good news: You are not alone... and if you are, there's nothing wrong with that. It turns out that some of our best thinkers and innovators are introverted. Now, Susan has published a new book, Quiet Power - The Secret Strengths Of Introverts (aimed at kids and teens), and she is growing her Quiet Revolution movement. Enjoy the conversation...
