Heaven's Beer League is now settling in and the hometeam - the Paradise Pythians - are settling near the bottom of the league just like in the initial year. However, today they had what it took as they knocked off the defending champions Allah's Angels. Frank Grant - who played for the Harrisburg Ponies in 1890 - knocked in 5 runs with a pair of extra base hits.  Shamokin's Stanley Coveleskie won his 2nd game; Mordecai Brown earned his 2nd save. The 2nd game of Heaven's Beer League ladder tournament took place last Monday, March 14th, at the Sandlot with the 6th place Elysian Eagles dashing the hopes of the 7th place Olympics by an 8-6 score in a classic duel.

Mickey Cochrane's two out, two run single put the Eagles out in front in the bottom of the first. After the initial stanza a pitcher's duel broke out between the Olympics' Tim Keefe and the Eagles immortal Cy Young. The next scoring occurred during the 5th inning when Tris Speaker tripled in two runs and scored on Luke Appling's error giving the O's the lead 3-2. Joe Cronin's solo shot in the th pushed the lead to two and a pair of runs in the top of the 8th had Sir Timothy needing only 6 outs to protect a four run lead.

The bottom of the 8th, however, proved problematic for Keefe. John Mize opened with a wlk, Turkey Stearnes singled, Cocnrane drew a walk chasing Keefe. The lefty Andy Cooper entered the game facing the tying run with no outs. After retiring Framkie Frisch he permitted singles to Appling and Ghost Marcelle followed by a passed ball and the game was tied entering the 9th.

Cy Young, still in the game, retired the O's in order in the top of the 9th setting up the dramatic finish. Ted Williams, as only he could do, drew an inning opening walk and, Beer League HR leader, Johnny Mize hit Cooper's 2nd offering over the  right field wall for the 8-6 win. The Eagles then moved on to tackle the 5th place Nirvana Nites as the move up the ladder to the final four.

Heaven's Beer League playoffs (Ladder Tourney format until Semi-Finals) got under way this afternoon at Heaven's Sandlot with the 7th place Olympics defeating and eliminating the 8th place Paradise Pythians by a score of 7-5.

Pythians star player manager Oscar Charleston shuffled his lineup to no avail by moving Frank Grant and Hughie Jennings to the top of the order. The pair plus Charlie himself, the 3rd hitter, combined to go 0 for 11. Charleston struck out three times.

The Pythians struck first in the 2nd with three consecutive hits leading to three runs off O's starter Mordecai Brown. However, Pythian starter Dizzy Dean could not hold the lead yielding three in the bottom of the third before being chased by four straight bingles to open the fourth earning ol' Diz an early shower. Joe DiMaggio's 2nd trip of the game in the 7th led to two necessary insurance runs and a 7-3 lead. Meanwhile, Three Finger Brown was in the midst of a 22 batter streak in which he yielded an error and suffered an errant toss that home plate arbiter King Solomon felt caught a wee bit of Hughie Jennings uni. The Pythians made a little noise in the 9th when Rap Dixon, Rev Cannady and Fats Jenkins all collected their 2nd hit of the game before Waxey Williams bounced to Joe Cronin to end the game. The Olympics, behind Sir Timothy Keefe, will take on the Elysian Eagles, with Cy Young, in tomorrow's eliminator.

NOTES: A scoreless game was busted wide open in the 4th inning when Ralph Kiner slammed his 33rd home run with a couple of Yanks on base. Before the stanza was over Charlie Gehringer hit a two run shot giving the Yanks a 5-0 lead. The Angels began a progressive scoring attack with a single run in the 5th and a pair in the 6th. Babe Ruth's league leading 46th homerun in the 7th completed the Yankee scoring and had them still comfortably in front 6-3. However, the winds which had been blowing the Yankees way now shifted in the Halos direction. A three run rally in the 7th was highlighted by Bucketfoot Al Simmons's 28th blast of the season. With the game tied at 6 the Angels scored 4 more in the bottom of the 8th fueled by big flies from Rogers Hornsby, Josh Gibson (45th), and Roy Campanella. The game ended with Sam Crawford's back against the wall pulling in the Bambino's final thrust. Bill Byrd was named game MVP for his 5 strong innings out of the bullpen to capture his 11th victory.

Satchel Paige pitched excellent ball in his first attempt at joining Walter Johnson and G.C. Alexander as 20 game winners but fell short when Alex himself yielded no runs to the Pythians in recording his 4th shutout of the season. The game was scoreless until the 9th with both hurlers masterful; Paige particularly so having faced only 25 men. Anytime a shutout occurs there must be a few defensive nuggets and this was no exception with the Player of the Game, Alexander, coming off the mound to catch Rap Dixon's 6th inning bunt attempt in the air and then twirling and firing to 2nd to nip Fats Jenkins for the double play. In the 9th, Paige started with a strike out of Pie Traynor but yielded a double to Monte Irvin. Then Joe Jackson coaxed the only walk of the game bringing up Rogers Hornsby to the plate with two on and one out. The Rajah promptly bounced Paige's 2nd offering off the left field wall scoring both runners. Josh Gibson popped to short and Buck Leonard went down swing but the damage was done. The Pythians did bring the tying run to the plate after John Beckwith's two out single but Ben Taylor grounded to Hornsby to end the contest.

Josh Gibson failed to homer leaving the home run race as follows:

John Mize 45 with 7 to play, with both Ruth & Gibson having only 5

Babe Ruth 45

Josh Gibson 44

Tomorrow's game finds the Olympics versus the Eagles and Big John Mize.

Just because I haven't posted in six weeks doesn't mean there hasn't been significant action. Let's play catch-up in golf and boxing.

WONDERFUL WORLD OF GOLF

Since we last met: Tommy Armour, Walter Hagen (much to my chagrin), and Porky Oliver were eliminated. Three golfers - top seeded Jug McSpayden (65.0 stroke average), Byron Nelson (65.9) and Dutch Harrison (67.6) - have advanced to the final five; tomorrow, this week's match features Bantam Ben Hogan versus Jim Ferrier with the winner advancing and the loser being eliminated. Next week Bobby Jones will take on Olan Dutra for the 5th and final spot.

Here is the skinny on this week's classic matchup:

Ben Hogan (5-1 66.5) having been defeated in this tourney by Dutch Harrison

Jim Ferrier (5-1 66.5) having been defeated in this tourney by Jug McSpayden

Both of this pair earned their trip to the tourney by winning three consecutive challenge matches last year. Ferrier lost his last time out while Hogan was defeated over a month ago and has had to survive two elimination matches versus Slammin' Sammy Snead and Gene Sarazen. This will be the first elimination match for Ferrier. I expect a good close match with Nelson winning on the 17th or 18th hole.

FRIDAY NIGHT FIGHTS

This Friday night, the heavyweight title match will be reprised when Champion, Gold medalist, Joe Louis meets runner-up, Silver Medalist, Jack Johnson in the winner's bracket final. Heading up the undercard will be a superb, not seen on Earth, elimination bout between heavyweights Jack Dempsey and Harry Wills. Truth be known, despite the disclaimer offered by promotors that the tournament would be size and weight neutral, the heavier weights have dominated action with only Armstrong making the final quintet under the maximum. After Friday only these fighters will remain: Louis, Johnson, the Dempsey-Wills winner, and Homicide Hank Armstrong & Sam Langford, scheduled for November 12th.

Here are the medalist's in the weight class tourney's which led up to this double elimination tourney:

HEAVYWEIGHT: Joe Louis (0), Jack Johnson (0), Jack Dempsey (1)

LIGHT HEAVY: Gene Tunney, Sam Langford (1), Harry Greb (1)

MIDDLEWEIGHT: Harry Greb (1), Sugar Ray Robinson, Jake LaMotta

WELTERWEIGHT: Henry Armstrong (1), Mickey Walker, Ted Lewis

LIGHTWEIGHT: Henry Armstrong (1), Benny Leonard, Tony Canzoneri

Also invited to the tourney were at large fighters: Harry Wills (1), Stanley Ketchell, and Willie Pep. The number iwithin the ellipses depicts the number of defeats within the tourney. Two defeats and you are eliminated.
