Kolojejchick leads Valley West in win over Pats

Sr. running back rushes for 256 yards on 32 carries

By Frank Kastreva, WVCD2.com

Matt Kolojejchick ran for three rushing touchdowns with Sr. QB Jack Crossin and Jr. FB Dave Ryncavage adding a score a piece as the Valley West Spartans downed the Pittston Area Patriots Sunday afternoon at Spartans Stadium.

The Sunday afternoon special took place due to terrible weather conditions over the last few days, which washed out this tilt two different times. The game which was originally re-scheduled for Saturday afternoon after being rained out on Friday night.

Crossin was the first to find pay dirt for the Spartans with 1:38 left in the 1st quarter. Crossin scampered 15 yards on a keeper capping the drive. Sr. K Rob Pepsis booted through the PAT, with the score Spartans 7 Pats 0.

Kolojejchick would score his first of the day with 4:12 left in the 2nd quarter. The Valley West half back took it five yards to the gold zone. Pepsis again nailed the PAT, with the score Spartans 14 Pats 0.

Kolojejchick got his second of the day on the Spartans first series of the 2nd half with a two yard rush to pay dirt. Pepsis's point after attempt was blocked, with the score Spartans 20 Pats 0.

Pittston Area would find the scoreboard with 4:40 left in the 3rd quarter. Jr. QB Brock Hazlet capped the scoring drive on a one yard QB sneak. Jr. K Paul Gattuso nailed the PAT, with the score Spartans 20 Pats 7.

Kolojejchick scored his final TD of the afternoon with 9:30 left in the game, scampering 17 yards to pay dirt. Kolojejchick would also add the two point conversion on a short run, with the score Spartans 28 Pats 7.

The "Rhino" Ryncavage capped the scoring on the day, rumbling 14 yards to the gold zone with only 2:43 left on the clock. Ryncavage scored while carrying three would-be tacklers on his back, it surely was a classic run for the big guy.

"I saw the hole as soon as I got the ball, the line opened it up nicely. Once I saw the end zone, I just didn't want to go down and kept the legs going," said Ryncavage of the run.

With the win the Spartans have clinched a playoff birth in the northeast sub-regional. Were they will be seeded and whom they will play, as well as were they will play will all be determined next week, which is the final week of the regular season.

Valley West could end up a three seed with a home playoff game, If either Hazleton Area or Delaware Valley lose. If both HA and DV win they could end up with Delaware Valley at DV, but that's just one scenario, there are many others.

Tunkhannock runs over Hanover Area in Coaltown

Tigers rush for over 300 yards in win against Hawks

By Frank Kastreva, WVCD2.com

The rain pelting the gridiron Friday night in Hanover Township, as the Tunkhannock Tigers did some pelting of their own to the tune of 41-6 over the Hawkeyes. Both Sr. FB John Porter and Jr. Matt Alfieri had over 100 yards on the ground with Sr. HB Dustin Faux pitching in 92 yards while carrying the pigskin.

The Tigers would open the scoring on this rain soaked night with 4:22 left in the first quarter. Alfieri scampered 86 yards to pay dirt, Sr. K Chuck Cechak booted the PAT, with the score Tigers 7 Hawks 0.

The next time the orange and black found the gold zone it was late in the 2nd quarter. Jr. WR James Mead would haul in a reception from Sr. QB John Benko with only 3:30 left in the half. Cechak would again nail the point after attempt, with the score Tigers 14 Hawks 0.

Tunkhannock would come out in the 2nd half, putting more points on the board in their opening drive. Benko would cap the 54 yard scoring drive on a 14 yard keeper to pay dirt. Cechak again booted the PAT, with the score Tigers 21 Hawks 0

Hanover Area would try and crawl back in it as they opened their first series of the 2nd half going 75 yards on six plays. The big play a run by Sr. RB Chris Kubaugh, which set up the Hawks at the Tigers 11 yard line.

Hanover Area would end up scoring on a fake field goal, which ended up as a pass to Jr. Jack Danko finding pay dirt. Sr. K Matt Gurnari's PAT was blocked, with the score Tigers 21 Hawks 6.

Hanover Area would not get any closer as the Tigers would score 20 unanswered points in what would turn out to be a rout.

Sr. FB John Porter, So. RB Shawn Caines and Sr. HB Dustin Faux would all add scores as Hanover Area had no answer for the orange and black's power running game.

The Hawks were beat in the trenches tonight, which certainly is not the place you want to be beat. With tonight's weather conditions you kind of had a feeling the game would be won on the ground, but not many thought Tunkhannock would push the Hawks off the ball.

With the loss Hanover Area will drop in the playoff point race, even so they will be competing in the district two class AA playoffs. Eight teams in AA will qualify, Hanover Area will be one of them, but with tonight's loss they may have just got themselves a tough draw in the opening round.

Tunkhannock's hopes of making the AAA playoffs were looking mighty meek coming into tonight's tilt with a mark of 3-5. Now, with the big win the Tigers are still within striking distance of the playoffs, although they will need some outside help.

(#5) West Scranton over Valley View- Invaders beat VV and then look to Delaware Valley in week 10.

(#6) Delaware Valley over North Pocono- Del Val should have no problem here, but next week is the real test.

(#7) Abington Heights over Scranton- Scranton not been playing as well down the stretch, drop another one here.

Riverside over (#8) Lakeland- I'm going for the upset, why not?

(#9) Dallas over Meyers- Mount tough at home, I think they win a close one.

(#10) Wyoming Area over Holy Redeemer- Chalk a win up for the green and gold.

GAR over Crestwood- Crestwood on their yearly end of the season slide.

(Saturday, October 20th) Cougars hand Spartans first loss of season Hazleton Area thorn in Spartan's side By Frank Kastreva, WVCD2.com Last season the Wyoming Valley West Spartans entered their tilt with Hazleton Area unbeaten at 7-0. The Cougars on the other hand had one blemish on the record, with a loss to Abington Heights. Hazleton Area ended up knocking off the Spartans 19-7. Well, deja-vu! Both teams came in again with the same records. The Cougars with a week one loss to Abington Heights and the Spartans at 7-0. Hazleton Area managed to up the point margin this year, winning the game 28-12. If this is any sign of what the playoff picture may look like in two week, both teams will see the playoffs. The loss for the Spartans certainly hurts their chances of a number one seed in the Northeast Sub-regional. Going into today's game Valley West was the number one seed with district 11's Parkand sitting as the second seed. Parkland defeated Allentown Dieruff to the tune of 49-0 on Friday night to remain unbeaten, therefore they will be the new number one seed when the points are tallied. Valley West on the other hand will drop to around the fourth seed. If Hazleton Area were to win out the next two weeks and Valley West do the same, it looks like the Cougars would be seeded higher then the Spartans. That means the maroon and gold would head to the playoffs as a wild card, that is if Delaware Valley remains unbeaten. DV will play West Scranton in week ten, that game may play a huge part in seeding for the quad A sub-regional. It will be interesting to see how things pan out, but it looks like Hazleton Area, Valley West and Delaware Valley can all make the playoffs with one loss. In today's game it was basically all Hazleton Area. The Spartans tried to grab momentum late in the 2nd quarter to no avail. The Cougars would open the scoring at the 11:52 mark of the 2nd quarter with Sr. QB Joe Kost capping the drive on a nine yard scamper to pay dirt. Sr. K Drew Orth would nail the PAT, with the score Cougars 7 Spartans 0. Sr. RB Nate Eachus would score his first TD on the day for the Cougars on their next series, capping the scoring drive on a two yard jaunt. Orth, the kid with the golden foot, again nailed the PAT, with the score Cougars 14 Spartans 0. Valley West would crawl back in it late in the 2nd quarter with Jr. QB Jack Crossin finding pay dirt on a 13 yard scamper. Hazleton Area would block the PAT, with the score Cougars 14 Spartans 6. An illegal substitution penalty against the Spartans on Hazleton Area's next possession would loom large. The Cougars were backed up deep in their own territory on fourth and two, looking to punt away and set the Spartans up with great field position. The flag was tossed before the kick and Hazleton Area retained possession. The Cougars actually drove down into Spartans territory, but time ran out before they were able to strike. The score at the half would stand at 14-6 with Hazleton Area in control. Eachus would find the gold zone for the second time on the day midway through the 3rd quarter. The Hazleton Area TD really was a crushing blow for the Spartan faithful, with Eachus rumbling 62 yards to pay dirt. The Spartans would find the scoreboard for the second time on the day at the 5:58 mark of the 4th quarter. Sr. RB Matt Kolojejchick capped the scoring drive on an eight yards d[...]
