Black actors triumph at very political Oscars

(image) Black Actors triumph at very political Oscars Hollywood (United States) (AFP) – Two black film stars took the early acting honors at the 89th Oscars on Sunday, which began with a salvo of jokes by host Jimmy Kimmel targeting US President Donald Trump. Mahershala Ali won the best supporting actor prize for his turn as a drug dealer with a heart in coming of age drama “Moonlight” while Viola Davis took the supporting actress statuette for her work in family drama “Fences.” Justin Timberlake opened the gala night — expected to be dominated by musical “La La Land” — with some upbeat music, and Kimmel then wasted no time putting the A-list audience in a political state of mind. “This broadcast is being watched live by millions of Americans and around the world in more than 225 countries that now hate us,” joked the 49-year-old Kimmel. The late-night comedian quipped that Trump, who pulled off a political upset win with his campaign that targeted immigration, had taken the heat off Hollywood and its annual gala. “I want to say thank you to President Trump. Remember last year when it seemed like the Oscars were racist? That’s gone, thanks to him,” Kimmel said. This year’s nominees have reflected a push by the Academy to reward diversity after the #OscarsSoWhite controversy of the past two years that prompted calls for a boycott of the annual bash. Ali was a first-time nominee along with “Moonlight” co-star Naomie Harris, while Davis and ...

Viola Davis is usually known to make people emotional during her performances in movies and television shows, but on Sunday night, Davis brought tears to the eyes of many when she accepted her award for best supporting actress for her role in “Fences.” The actress first used her acceptance speech to reflect on her career. “People ask me all the time: ‘What kind of stories do you want to tell, Viola?’ And I say exhume those bodies, exhume those stories. The stories of the people who dreamed big… People who fell in love and lost.” ...

A Short List of Great Actors and Directors Who Now Have Fewer Oscars Than Suicide Squad

“Oscar winner Suicide Squad .” Let that phrase roll around in your mouth a little. Savor it as is you would a fine wine or the touch of winter’s first snowflake on your tongue. With its win for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, this rotting garbage pile of a movie now has a permanent place in Oscar history. In fact, it has one more Oscar than many of the Actors and directors whose contributions have enlivened the art of motion pictures throughout its century-plus history, but were never recognized with an award for an individual film. (Lifetime achievement awards are nice and all, but they’re basically the academy’s way of making up for an egregious oversight, usually after the artist in question has stopped producing new work.) Here’s a short list of those poor, benighted souls who may have created brilliant art but, according to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science, are at least one Oscar less good than Suicide Squad . Alfred Hitchcock Stanley Kubrick Orson Welles Charlie Chaplin Buster Keaton Fred Astaire Cary Grant Barbara Stanwyck Kirk Douglas Greta Garbo Marilyn Monroe Paul Thomas Anderson Wes Anderson David Lynch David Fincher James Dean Harrison Ford Mia Farrow Angela Bassett Will Smith Annette Bening Samuel L. Jackson Amy Adams Danny Glover Robert Altman Howard Hawks Spike Lee Sigourney Weaver Read more in Slate about this year’s Oscars. ...

Why Bill Paxton Was Different Than Most Actors

(image) It’s a shame it can take an actor’s death to learn how selfless he was behind the scenes. Take Bill Paxton. News of the 61-year-old star of “Titanic,” “Aliens” and “Big Love” dying sent a stream of memorials across social media. Fans mourned. Stars who worked with Paxton did something more. They described a humble man who proved a joy to work alongside. The actor’s death sparked a wave of tributes, both from the directors who collaborated with him to fellow stars recalling a humble colleague. God bless Bill Paxton. May he Rest In Peace. He was so kind and generous to all he worked with- an eternal child about creativity and life. — Val Kilmer (@valkilmer) February 27, 2017 He made this movie great–he acted his heart out. What a talented man. My thoughts are with his family. — Helen Hunt (@HelenHunt) February 26, 2017 Paxton’s generosity extended to those whose names don’t appear on movie posters. Ernie Mannix is a music composer for film and television and the author of the Hollywood novel, “ Six Devils In The San Fernando Valley. ” Mannix shared his personal connection to Paxton on Facebook, and he agreed to expound upon it here: I had the good fortune to work with Bill Paxton on a show for HBO called “Big Love.” Bill played a polygamist married to three women. Anyone can imagine that being married to three people would be quite chaotic, and the plot lines of “Big Love” reflected such a chaotic and sto ...

(image) Freeform Asian Actors aren’t the only ones taking on white characters — Latino stars are doing the same thing! Yes, just like Shay Mitchell & Janel Parrish on Pretty Little Liars , these celebrities with Brazilian, Colombian, Mexican and/or Cuban ancestries are redefining the backgrounds of their television characters. ’cause, hey, it’s the 21st century and diversity should be celebrated! When people were fan-casting the leading lady of Freeform’s upcoming Famous in Love , Paige Townsen, many white redheaded actresses’ names, such as Sophie Turner ‘s, were thrown into the mix. Eventually, Bella Thorne , who’s partially white but also partially Cuban, booked the gig. However, the Rebecca Serle book didn’t exactly say that Paige wasn’t any part Latina. For all we know, the character could have the same exact background as Bella. In these instances, however, TV characters who are specified (for the most part) white are portrayed by awesome Latino Actors: Skip this Ad Next ADVERTISEMENT Shadowhunters " class="image_0" /> Shadowhunters " class="image_1" /> Teen Wolf " class="image_2" /> The Vampire Diaries " class="image_3" /> Riverdale " class="image_4" /> Riverdale " class="image_5" /> Simon Lewis, Shadowhunters With a Cuban father and a Colombian other, Alberto Rosende is 100% Latino. Why using movie clips in a political ad exposing paid actors masquerading as steelworkers is fair use

Sun, 26 Feb 2017 22:11:00 GMT

Source: --- Sunday, February 26, 2017
Republican Ohio Congressman John Kasich released a video showing an actor dressed as a steelworker, pretending to be an average local citizen who was upset with Democrat Governor Ted Strickland’s performance. The Ohio Democratic Party countered by putting up a YouTube video showing that the “steelworker” was actually a paid actor called Chip Redden, illustrating the claim with clips from Redden’s career. But Arginate Studios, LLC, one of the production companies responsible for one of the Redden film clips, objected to the use of the clip, and had the video removed from YouTube with a copyright claim. As the Electronic Frontier Foundation’s Kurt Opsahl explains, As an initial matter, the use is extremely transformative (adding new meaning and message). The original video by Arginate is an entry in a film festival’s “Road Movie” genre, featuring Redden as Sam Carpenter, a man who provides some special tickets to two women in a bar. The political video’s use, on the other hand, was to provide evidence that the supposed steelworker was actually a paid actor. The use could hardly be more transformative. As the Supreme Court explained, transformative works “lie at the heart of the fair use doctrine’s guarantee of breathing space within the confines of copyright.” Moreover, the political ad only used a few seconds of the original film. While courts have held that “entire verbatim reproductions are justifiable where the purpose of the w ...
