TERRA 536: Wildlife at Work: Beavers, Otters and Native Fish on the Verde River

Thur, 24 June 2010 12:00:00 GMT

Beavers are some of the great engineers of the wild kingdom. In Arizona, these toothy critters are hard at work along the Verde River, helping to restore this fragile river system to good health. They are creating dams and lodges that improve the habitat for otters, native fish and other species. People benefit as well because a healthy river system means good drinking water for the growing communities downstream.

Thu, 10 June 2010 12:00:00 GMT

TERRA is pleased to bring you this special screening of Montana FARE. Most of our audience doesn't know that TERRA is also a popular science and nature TV series on MontanaPBS and this series was recently awarded a College Emmy for the broadcast of Jaime Jelenchick's Montana FARE and the corresponding interview produced by Danny Schmidt and Andy Adkins. We are proud of the crew that made this possible and thankful to MontanaPBS and the Science and Natural History Filmmaking Program at Montana State University that encourages and supports such amazing (and award winning!) student work.

TERRA 534: Hindsight and Foresight - 20 Years After the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill

Wed, 26 May 2010 03:05:49 +0000

In light of the recent catastrophe in the Gulf Coast region, it seems appropriate to re-visit the previous disaster of the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska. This film, produced by NOAA, takes a look at the past 20 years of recovery and persisting environmental effects in Prince William Sound. What does this film tell us about the consequences of the present BP oil drilling disaster in the Gulf Coast region and what can we learn from it?

Wed, 07 Apr 2010 20:14:50 +0000

'Return To The Wild: A Modern Tale of Wolf & Man' takes a fair and open-minded look at the re-introduction of the gray wolf to the Northern Rockies, the friction it has caused, and the passionate debate it has stirred. The goal of the documentary is to address the issue of how man and predator can co-exist, in the hope of finding a balanced solution that addresses the needs of the ranchers, wildlife supporters, hunters, and most importantly, the wolves themselves.

Fri, 04 Dec 2009 19:55:05 +0000

In this program produced by Sharon Pieczenik, Erik Patel, a PhD Candidate at Cornell University, discusses his efforts to save silky sifaka lemurs in Madagascar. Ninety-eight percent of Madagascar's mammals, including the rare silky sifaka lemurs, exist nowhere else on Earth. Because of their white fur, and their amazing ability to fly through the forest, silky sifaka lemurs are called "angels of the forest." But silkies are one of the world's top 25 most endangered primates. If silky sifaka lemurs were to disappear from Madagascar, then they would disappear from our world. International scientists and local Malagasy conservationists are fighting for the survival of this exceptional species and its irreplaceable habitat.

Mon, 21 Sep 2009 23:14:51 +0000

In March 2009, a group of NOAA scientists and marine debris experts gathered on the shores the Potomac River to tackle a problem left ignored for the last 25 years. Abandoned during the construction of a local yacht club since the 1980's, a barge stuck in the mud poses potential environmental and navigational hazards. Yet, no one knows who left it, and no one has been able to remove it. NOAA and the Alice Ferguson Foundation have banded together to sort the problem out. This first installment traces the mounting effort through the silent perspective of the The Barge That Wouldn't Budge.

Oysters were once capable of filtering all the water in the Chesapeke Bay in two days. Now after centuries of Oyster harvesting the bay is no longer capable of cleaning itself. A new brand of oystermen is emerging to meet the needs of the bay while also satisfying customers who are hungry for Chesapeake oysters. These Oystermen have replaced antiquated dredging techniques with aquculture, or oyster farming, and have discovered a sustainable way to harvest oysters while also helping to clean up the bay.

The Chesapeake Bay hosts many fragile ecosystems. For year the agriculture industry has shouldered a majority of the blame for the deteriorating water quality that is destroying these precious habitats. While in the past, much of the blame was warranted due to the excessive untreated runoff, there is now a new breed of farmer that is taking there impact on the environment seriously. They are setting new precedence for environmental stewardship and bringing Farming Forward.

After a long day of digging gold out of the ground, crushing it at the mill and refining it at the lab, Ralph Johnsrud and his miners can go back to their homes in Virginia City. Referred to by many as a ghost town, Virginia city witnessed the rise and fall of Montana's gold industry. However, in the past couple of years miners like Ralph reopened their mines, offering jobs to locals and bringing life to the town. Environmentally friendly mining is one of the biggest concerns at Madison Mine and illustrates the new face of mining in the American west.

Wed, 11 Feb 2009 10:31:41 +0000

Nearly a century of aggressive fire suppression has left our National Forests overcrowded and disease infested, leading to historically high amounts of dead and live fuels accumulation. This paired with a recent trend of hotter and drier summers sets the stage for a surge in conflagrations so immense that more and more fire suppression efforts are proving futile. Not only does this epidemic threaten our wild legacy, but it also puts thousands of firefighters, homeowners, and those who recreate at risk. Fueling The Inferno provides an introduction to this issue and explores some of the causal factors and societal implications.

Mon, 12 Jan 2009 19:43:41 +0000

Just three miles from the northeast entrance of Yellowstone National Park, Noranda Inc. proposed to build one of North America’s largest gold mines. Cooke City residents, Jim and Heidi Barrett knew that this would irreversibly damage the Yellowstone ecosystem and the place they loved. So with the help of various non-profit organizations, including the Greater Yellowstone Coalition, they fought a battle to stop the mine. Against all odds they won. This inspirational story demonstrates how ordinary people standing up for what they believe in can make a difference.

Fri, 19 Dec 2008 18:54:30 +0000

THE FLYING DUSTBIN is the success story of the Fulmar, a seabird which numbers 500,000 pairs in the UK but was virtually unknown as a breeding species at the turn of the last century. The film documents the reasons for its success, but is also a warning. The Fulmar faces some very serious modern problems, 9 out of 10 Fulmars in the North Sea have plastic in their stomachs whilst global warming is diminishing its natural prey stocks, leading to breeding failures. The film was shot at various locations around Scotland including Aberdeenshire, the Orkney Islands, St Kilda as well as in the Netherlands.

Examining the sublime landscapes of North Cascade, Mount Rainier, and Olympic National Parks, researchers shed light on emerging indications that climate change is real and predict how warming temperatures will affect the natural resources and timeless beauty of the region. As glaciers melt and the winter snow-pack decreases, what is the fate of the aquatic ecosystems and cold water fish that depend on runoff during the hottest and driest parts of the year? How will enormous amounts of unstable sediment exposed by retreating ice-sheets on Mount Rainier affect the roads and infrastructure of that park and beyond? Will pine beetle infestations and larger forest fires become widespread in the approaching future?

Sometimes, unexpected guests can very quickly become pests. But what happens when you ask them to leave? Join the Red Queen and Alice on live action, animated journey down the rabbit hole, as they are caught in an evolutionary arms war between parasite and host. Science films often portray their content in a very pedestrian way. This one set out to challenge this approach by presenting a theory about parasite/host co-evolution (by Matt Ridley) in a visually extraordinary manner, using Lewis Carroll's imagery. This short is aimed at a general, educated audience, and was produced as part of an ongoing MFA in Science & Natural History Filmmaking at Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana
