Don Street Antigua Race Week 1985 Preview

Fri, 17 Jan 2014 15:30:00 -0500

CLICK TO PLAY Don Street Antigua Race Week 1985 Preview From Don Street Antigua Race Week 1985. A one hour award-winning documentary by Charles Croft which lets you share the intense sailing action aboard Don Street's 80 year old, 44 foot, engineless yawl, "Iolaire" during Antigua Sailing Week, 1985, Iolarie's final appearance in one of the world's top sailing events. Built in 1905, Don had sailed and raced "Iolaire" throughout the Caribbean for forty years while he developed his famous Imray-Iolair charts and the first comprehensive cruising guides that opened up the Caribbean to modern sailors. Antigua Sailing Week races became an annual event for Street and Iolaire since the first regatta in 1957. In 1985, Street decided to retire Iolaire from racing and they both went out in style, finishing only 5 points out of first place at race week's end. This award-winning documentary shows you what Caribbean racing was like in its golden years when the skippers all new each other and racing was more fun than business. With a down to earth style, he teaches you how to tie each knot and most importantly, when to use it, making a sometimes difficult subject easy and pleasurable. First Don demonstrates at normal speed then he shows you a slow motion close up that makes the knot's path easy to follow and learn. Don also covers proper line handling, dock line throwing, sail stops, halyards, and how to repair a chafed rope. Don gives you the critical knot and line handling skills every skipper should know. With Jean-du-Sud Around the World - Trailer

Thu, 17 May 2012 11:00:35 -0400

TheSailingChannel is honored to offer what many consider to be the finest sailing film ever made: With Jean-du-Sud Around the World. A Film by Yves Gélinas. Twice winner of the Palme d'Or at the Larochelle Sailing Film Festival (for Part One in 1983 and Part Two in ’85) and of 8 awards in other festivals, Jean-du-Sud celebrates the filmmaker's 28,000 mile, single-handed circumnavigation through the roaring forties and around Cape Horn aboard his Alberg 30 sloop. Available for purchase: http://www.thesailingchannel.tv/jean-du-sud/ 100 minutes - English and French VIDEO DOWNLOAD: $9.99 DVD: $19.95 plus S&H YOUTUBE RENTALS With Jean-du-Sud Around the World is now available as a YouTube Rental for just $2.99 (US Only). Rent our sailing documentaries at TheSailingChannel YouTube Documentary Playlist. Shot in 16-mm film with sync sound, Jean-du-Sud puts you in the cockpit: Yves speaks as he would to a fellow crew member. Unless you do it yourself, this is as close as you'll ever get to a solo circumnavigation. In attempting to sail non–stop between Saint-Malo, France and Gaspé, QC, Canada through the Roaring Forties and around Cape Horn alone aboard his boat, Jean-du-Sud, Canadian Yves Gélinas added his personal share to the art of sailing a small boat around the world. Besides the voyage, his accomplishments included the design of a system to self-steer his boat, the writing of a book to document the voyage, and the shooting of a 16 mm film while sailing. Even though Yves was unable to complete the circumnavigation non-stop, Jean-du-Sud was the smallest boat up to that time to sail that route. In acknowledgement, the Joshua Slocum Society International bestowed on Gélinas the Golden Circle Award. "I had a lot of time to meditate – the phone did not ring often – but I must say I haven’t had any great revelations, I did not experience nirvana or samadhi. Yet I have known many moments of total contentment : ends of days when the sun dove into the sea splashing half the sky with warm light...The trade wind caressing naked skin (it is almost as good as if it came from a loved one)…The simple pleasure of watching the bow of my boat slice through the surface of the sea, pushed, but also guided by an invisible force : the magic of the wind…." Yves Gélinas Sailing Documentaries from $2.99. [...]

Matt Rutherford Around the Americas Return

Wed, 25 Apr 2012 21:30:08 -0400

On April 21st, 2012, Matt Rutherford, 31, sailed into his homeport of Annapolis, Maryland on the Chesapeake Bay after completing a non-stop, 314 day 27,000 mile solo circumnavigation of North and South America - the first such solo voyage ever in a small sailboat. He made the voyage in a 27 foot sloop, St. Brendan, named after a 6th century explorer. The 1970, 42 year old, Swedish built Albin-Vega sailboat is a sturdy vessel, but not one designed for the rigors of the Northwest Passage and Cape Horn. Rutherford had actually crossed his own start line at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel near Norfolk, Virginia. But he was determined not to step foot on land until he sailed up the Bay to his homeport of Annapolis. Dozens of boats escorted Rutherford into the harbor where family, friends, and hundreds of spectators waited to greet him at the City Dock. After stepping off his vessel, Rutherford shared brief hugs with his Mom and Dad. He was then escorted to a reception ceremony hosted by sailing legend, Gary Jobson, and attended by the Governor of Maryland, the Mayor of Annapolis, and many other dignitaries. After receiving numerous awards in recognition of his record-breaking voyage, Matt met with the press for an extend news conference. Rutherford undertook the trip for personal accomplishment and in support of C.R.A.B., Chesapeake Region Accessible Boating - a nonprofit that provides the joy and challenge of sailing to individuals with disabilities. You can donate to C.R.A.B. online at www.crabsailing.org. For more information about Matt and his voyage, visit www.solotheamericas.org. Matt’s goal was to raise $250,000 for C.R.A.B: ten dollars for every mile of his record-setting circumnavigation of the Americas. With $80,000 raised to date and more pledges coming in following his successful return, Matt is committed to translating his personal triumph into financial support for C.R.A.B and disabled sailors. TheSailingChannel is planning to produce a major documentary about Matt's solo around the Americas voyage. Sailing Documentaries from $2.99. Watch our new curated sailing channel for GoogleTV. RawFaith - Trailer

Wed, 11 Apr 2012 12:30:08 -0400

RawFaith is a documentary about a man driven by a mission to build and sail a 100 foot handicapped accessible galleon to distant shores. Our own notions of personal priorities and obligations to others will be prompted by the experiences of the McKay family, RawFaith and its mission. Looking to take on a new challenge, family patriarch George McKay coalesces his family around the idea of building a three masted galleon that would accommodate the family and the needs of their daughter Elizabeth with Marfans Syndrome as a floating family compound. The ship evolves into a broader mission to take other handicapped families on accessible adventures but its evolution saw the dissolution of a marriage and the departure of Elizabeth and his three sons from the project after its launch. George McKay continued to pursue the mission with a solitary focus until the ship’s tragic sinking in a December storm off Nantucket, MA. RawFaith is a collaboration between SeaWorthy Productions and Post Office Editorial. We are working towards a summer 2012 release and are looking for $5000 to help offset the cost for music and a project "sound sweep". You can make a contribution to the documentary at www.kickstarter.com/projects/1297825733/rawfaith Sailing Documentaries from $2.99. Watch our new curated sailing channel for GoogleTV. Albatross Exhibitionist

Sun, 02 Oct 2011 11:30:08 -0400

This video was inspired by the tragic story and images of Albatross chicks on Midway Island in the Pacific dying slow and agonizing deaths due to ingested plastics consumed in error by the seabirds. It was produced by Skeleton Sea, a group of surfers who have created a green art project that promotes clean oceans, respect for nature and human rights. The artists use the flotsam washed up on beaches to create their art. In February 2012, Skeleton Sea held an art workshop in Sanya, China in association with the Volvo Ocean Race during its stop-over. The group presented its work, "Presents of the Sea" to the Serenity Marina Sailing School where it will remain on permanent exhibition. Watch our new curated sailing channel for GoogleTV. This is especially useful on yachts with dual wheel systems. Finally, sail north through the Atlantic to Ireland's music-filled shores and a summer of history, classic sailing, and friendship. Along the way, you'll learn some of the truisms that could help you get out adventuring sooner and more enjoyably—whether on the water or on land. You'll also come to know more about this longtime cruising couple who have been dubbed "the enablers" because of their enthusiasm and willingness to share their secrets for exploring the far corners of the world on a limited budget. "After voyaging tens of thousands of engineless miles under sail, penning more useful marine books than Hiscock and Moitessier combined, and receiving more awards for their pursuits than Tom Hanks has for his, Lin and Larry Pardey are entitled to their well-earned nautical opinions." —HERB McCORMACK, EDITOR-AT-LARGE, CRUISING WORLD VIDEO DOWNLOAD TheSailingChannel.TV offers Cruising Has No Limits as a HIGH QUALITY VIDEO DOWNLOAD available in both Windows Media (WMV) and QuickTime (MOV) versions suitable for full screen viewing. When to Heave To: Windward

Thu, 23 Sep 2010 16:00:08 -0400

When do you heave to when sailing to windward? Lin and Larry Pardey give you the answer and show you how. From Storm Tactics: Cape Horn Tested (84-Minutes). VIDEO DOWNLOAD TheSailingChannel.TV offers Storm Tactics as a HIGH QUALITY VIDEO DOWNLOAD available in both Windows Media (WMV) and QuickTime (MOV) versions suitable for full screen viewing. PRICE: JUST $12.99. DVD also available. Just pay with Paypal or your Credit Card, download and watch full screen on your PC or MAC. This 84 minute video delivers the skills you need to weather storms with confidence. If you like the preview, buy the DVD. It's the next best thing to having Lin and Larry Pardey onboard, coaching you on storm tactics as the seas build and the rigging howls. Closing in on 200,000 miles of blue water voyaging, Lin and Larry Pardey are recognized as the sailing world's most experienced and knowledgeable cruising couple. In Storm Tactics, they provide a detailed look at the techniques and gear that have kept them safe at sea. "... I wanted to show how the sailor's safety valve--heaving-to-works, and the slick it creates. It's hard for people to imagine the almost magic effect of a slick as it saps the power of breaking waves...." - Larry Pardey. "One of the reasons I wanted to sail east-to-west around Cape Horn was to take video shots proving that small vessels can safely weather storms if they are well outfitted and efficiently handled," Larry Pardey stated after his record-breaking voyage. Lin and Larry completed their against-the-wind rounding of the Great Southern Capes on board their engineless 29-foot Taleisin, weathering nine days of storm-force winds to reach Puerto Montt in Chile. There they interviewed several high-latitude voyagers, prepared the narrative, and shot further detailed footage to complete the Storm Tactics video, a project Lin and Larry conceived almost ten years ago. TheSailingChannel.TV is proud to bring you "In the Wake of the Zaca," the remarkable adventures of a California schooner. This award-winning documentary by Luther Greene captures a lost age of adventure, romance, and Hollywood glamour told through the history of a 75 year-old, 118 foot sailing ship. Sail in her wake and gain a unique perspective on history, and experience adventures most of us can only dream about. A New Voyage Round The World - Book Review

Mon, 17 Dec 2007 18:00:00 -0500

TheSailingChannel.TV uses historic images and classical music to bring to life its review of A New Voyage Round The World by William Dampier. First published in 1697, a new edition from 1500 Books makes this little known classic available to the modern reader. Providing the inspiration for such works as Robinson Crusoe and Gulliver's Travels, William Dampier (1652 - 1715) was the forefather of the English narrative. Pirate, explorer and naturalist, Dampier provides one of the earliest and most eloquent accounts of discovery and piracy on the high seas with keen observations of people, places, and nature. Dampier circled the globe three times, wrote of the wildlife and flora of the Galapagos 150 years before Darwin, visited Australia close to 80 years before Cook, and his innovations in navigational technology were studied by Cook and Nelson. Filled with accounts of privateering exploits as well as the first detailed descriptions of plants and animals ever recorded by an Englishmen, A New Voyage Round the World provides a rare and exciting glimpse into life on the ocean at a time when a true map of the world did not yet exist. Features an introduction by Kris Lane, College of William and Mary. src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=thesa-20&o=1&p=8&l=as1&asins=1933698047&fc1=000000&IS2=1<1=_blank&lc1=0000FF&bc1=000000&bg1=FFFFFF&f=ifr" style="width:120px;height:240px;" scrolling="no" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" frameborder="0"> Available at TheSailingChannel.TV Ship's Store: http://www.thesailingchannel.tv/store/books/1500_books/new_voyage.htm Or click now and buy on Amazon. BMW Oracle Yacht Racing Keel

Mon, 26 Mar 2007 12:05:00 -0400

The BMW ORACLE America's Cup racing yacht features a state-of-the-art keel that accounts for 19 of the vessel's 24 legal tons. Designing and manufacturing the keel posed an exceptional engineering challenge. Engineers needed to balance strength with maximum hydrodynamic efficiency. The keel's bulb or "bomb" must be heavy enough to keep the yacht upright and stable. At the same time the keelfin and bulb must have limited resistance to water flow to maintain maximum boat speed. Further complicating the design is the fact that the keel tends to vibrate as the yacht increases speed. These vibrations transfer to the hull affecting the yacht's structural integrity. To improve the yacht's stiffness, BMW engineers have applied similar technology used in stiffening the companies motor cars. They've also refined the shape and position of the keel wings to increase boat speed. Watch SailTV to see live events and special features from the 2007 America's Cup in Valencia, Spain, full screen on your PC, 24x7x365.
