The No. 3-ranked UT Tyler women’s basketball team suffered a 67-66 loss to Sul Ross in its American Southwest Conference opener on Thursday at the Gallego Center. The Patriots (5-1, 0-1 ASC) had a 32-game conference and 21-game regular-season winning streak end with the defeat to the Lobos (4-1, 1-0 ASC) who hit 14 3-pointers and shot 46.9 percent from the field in the game to pull off the upset.

Longview set to host John Tyler in the Red Zone Game of the Week

All eyes will be on John Tyler and number 14 Longview as the two rivals are set to meet in a District 11-6A showdown. First place will be on the line in the Red Zone Game of Week, which will be the 90th meeting between the East Texas powers.

Lufkin focused on much-needed defensive improvements

Imagine scoring 63 points in a football game and it's still not good enough to win. That unfortunately is the tough reality Lufkin had to embrace last Friday night against Beaumont West Brook, as the Panthers suffered their second loss in district. Lufkin went down 70-63. In a game in which 19 touchdowns were made, you have to wonder where the defense is.

Tyler Junior College hosts Region XIV media day

In the middle of all this football talk, we can't ignore the fact that basketball season is fast approaching. Stephen F. Austin held its media day last week, and on Tuesday it was Region XIV's turn. Tyler Junior College hosted the event at Wagstaff Gymnasium, where the conference preseason poll was revealed in front of the coaches from each school.

Arp Tigers hand West Rusk first loss; gain momentum as the playoffs approach

Arp did something pretty special last Friday by knocking off then-undefeated West Rusk. For their accomplishment, the Tigers received the Red Zone Game Ball, and we'll have that presentation for you later this week. But for now, head coach Dale Irwin and company are gaining momentum with just three weeks to go in the regular season.

SFA men's basketball holds media day

It's the middle of football season, but the Stephen F. Austin men's basketball team is preparing for its 2016 campaign. New head coach Kyle Keller and the Jacks held media day on Thursday afternoon. SFA has captured four straight Southland Conference titles and has been to three consecutive NCAA tournaments where it has two victories.

Pair of East Texans to be inducted into the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame

A pair of East Texans will soon join the likes of John Tyler's Earl Campbell, Longview's Bobby Taylor and Groveton's Rodney Thomas in the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame. Former Big Sandy Wildcat Lovie Smith and former Lufkin panther Reggie McNeal are among nine legendary figures in the class of 2017, which was announced on Wednesday.

Highway 271 rivals Gladewater and Gilmer are set to square in the Red Zone Game of the Week on Friday. This will be the first meeting between the Bears and Buckeyes since their epic third round playoff game in 2014 where Gilmer won in the final seconds. Both clubs are ranked in the top 15 in Class 4A and with a potential district title on the line, the players are ready for an exciting match-up.

Longview Lobos are leading the pack in District 11-6A

It's not very flashy, but the Longview offense is one of the best in East Texas. Only Gilmer has scored more points through six weeks, and the I-formation ground and pound game is a big reason why the "Rockin L" sits atop the District 11-6A standings. As the only team at a perfect 3-0 in league play, the tradition rich Lobos are leading the pack.
