On Monday the Associated Press released its top 25 preseason poll for college football. And for the third straight year, Texas A&M didn't make the cut. Starting fast though and moving their way up the polls in recent seasons hasn't been the problem. In fact, the Aggies, who have over a dozen East Texans on the roster, were number four in the initial playoff rankings last year.

ETBU Athletics Release  The 2017 college football season has arrived and along with that comes preseason polls. The American Southwest Conference just released preseason poll for the upcoming season and East Texas Baptist University is predicted to finish in third place. The John Tyler Lions always seem to look sharp in their uniforms. But thanks to East Texas lawyer Keith Miller, the Lions will look better and play safer. Helmets that advertise lowering the impact of hits, and possibly reduce the amount of concussions, come with a hefty price-tag. Red Zone Rundown: Jacksonville looking to take next step as a program

You want two Red Zone rundowns on Wednesday night, well here we go and let's stay in District 17-5A for the next preview. No one gave them a real chance, but Jacksonville crashed the postseason party last year by defeating Nacogdoches in the final week of the regular season. The Indians failed to earn their first playoff win since 2004, but a three-year playoff drought was snapped.

Red Zone Rundown: Whitehouse knows offense must be more consistent to win district title

According to Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine, Whitehouse will finish second in 17-5A this coming season. We'll see how it all shakes out, but the good news is, the Wildcats appear to be district title contenders once again. Since winning 12 games in 2013, head coach Adam Cook and company have racked up a total of 13 victories the past three seasons.

Red Zone Rundown: Lufkin looks to get past first round playoff hurdle

Like Longview, Lufkin is always talented. Before the Panthers begin District 12-6A action, they'll play a loaded East Texas schedule featuring the Lobos in week 1, followed by Nacogdoches and John Tyler. Normally a 7 and 4 campaign would be considered a success, but not in Panther nation. In fact, despite making the playoffs every year, Lufkin hasn't advanced past the first round since 2012.

In District 11-6A with John Tyler and Tyler Lee, who we featured Monday night, Longview figures to challenge for the league title in 2017. In fact, the Lobos and Lions shared the district championship a year ago. It's no secret, Longview is used to winning and it does so by running the football and playing sound defense.

Carthage head coach Scott Surratt calls it ink poisoning, but the Associated Press released it preseason poll Monday. As you would expect, the reigning Class 4A  Division I champions are number one in Class 4A.

About seven miles away from John Tyler off the loop, Tyler Lee held its first practice of fall camp. Clayton George gave up on the Red Raiders program after just one season, but Tyler ISD athletic director Greg Priest connected on a Hail Mary by hiring Kurt Traylor in June.

Since 2003, Gilmer has won at least 10 games in every season, except for one. Lufkin All Stars make history and advance to Little League World Series

It hasn't been a completely smooth ride, but the 12 and under Lufkin All Stars entered Wednesday night's championship game of the Southwest Regional tournament in Waco undefeated. Known as Texas East, the boys faced Texas West, a team from San Antonio. As we like to say, "Beast Texas" came through one more time. Lufkin defeated Texas West 2 to 1 to punch its ticket to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

Texans to face Panthers and East Texans in preseason opener

As for the Texans, they will play their preseason opener Wednesday night at Carolina. Defensive end J.J. Watt will suit up and play after missing all of 2016. Tom savage is getting the start at quarterback, but rookie Deshaun Watson will likely see a lot of time as well. Don't forget this, two East Texans play for the Panthers.

At the collegiate level, Texas held its first scrimmage of fall camp over the weekend. With so much talent from the region playing in the Big 12, it is easy to point out the offensive playmakers. But a pair of defensive backs on the Longhorns roster will show up plenty on Saturday's. In fact Gilmer's Kris Boyd and Nacogdoches product Josh Thompson, who is just a freshman, have already been showing out during preseason practices.
