While there weren't any players from our region in attendance at The Star in Frisco on Tuesday, their talents still took center stage. Since its formation in 1996, no first year head coach has led his program to a Big 12 title. Longview and Whitehouse make DI championship bracket, but fall at 7 on 7 state tournament

You have to go back all the way to 2004 to find the last time an East Texas football program won a 7 on 7 state title. And that was Tyler Lee. Ten schools had a chance to end the long drought in College Station this weekend. In the Division II tournament, Carthage, San Augustine, and Palestine each made the championship bracket. The Wolves made the best run on Friday, but fell in the third round.

7 on 7 state tournament Division II pool play results

Tyler Lee, way back in 2004, is the last school from East Texas to win a 7 on state title. Ten programs from our region are in College Station this week looking to end the drought. Division II pool play, which is for 4A teams and below got underway Thursday. Carthage, Gilmer, San Augustine, Palestine, and Canton were all in action.

Tyler Lee QB Chance Amie talks about verbal commitment to Houston

Since 2013, the University of Houston has signed six players from East Texas and head coach Major Applewhite is adding to those numbers. The Cougars now have three players from the region from the Class 2018 that have verbally committed to the program. Tyler Lee quarterback Chance Amie verbally committed to Houston on Monday, and will join forces with John Tyler's Dekalen Goodson and Lufkin's Malik Jackson.

Tyler Lee 2018 senior Chance Amie announced his commitment to Houston via Twitter. Amie chose the Cougars over 17 other offers including Iowa State, North Carolina, Syracuse, and Virginia. The last time the Whitehouse Wildcats qualified for a 7-on-7 state tournament was 2014, and they came one win short from taking it all.  But since their runner-up finish the Wildcats have failed to return to College Station; until now. After falling to Longview in the Tyler 7-on-7 state qualifier, the Marshall Mavericks had one last chance this weekend in Rowlett. The Mavs got through Killeen Ellison, Waxahachie, and Arlington Bowie in pool play in order to advance to the tournament semifinals. NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders goes on shopping spree to help Canton tornado victims

Deion Sanders played in the 1992 World Series with the Braves, but "Primetime" is known more for his play on the football field. The NFL Hall of Famer and former Dallas Cowboy has land and a home in Canton, so he's seen first hand all the devastation left behind from the April 29th tornadoes that ripped through Van Zandt County. Hoping to make a difference in his community, Sanders took part in a shopping spree Tuesday morning at Sam's Club in Tyler.

Saturday, multiple East Texas teams participated in the Tyler 7-on-7 State Qualifier.  After four games in each of the four pools were over only four teams were left to compete in the semifinals.
