Wembley Stadium is a name that every football fan will be familiar with. The brand new stadium is located on the same spot as the old one, which was originally opened in 1923.

As you would expect, both versions had their own nicknames by which they are commonly referred to. The original Wembley earned the name of the Twin Towers, which was due to the two chunky looking towers that were the distinctive feature of the original structure. Those towers became a familiar and welcome sight to many football fans over many decades. Many fans were sad to see them go in 2003, but they have since been replaced by a new and very different feature for the 21st century.

The new feature is known as the Wembley Arch. It is a whopping 133 metres high, and no matter where you are in London, if you have a good vantage point and the weather is clear, you will probably be able to see it.

Arsene Wenger may enjoy an illustrious reputation as the most successful manager in Arsenal’s history, but the man himself enjoyed a much more inauspicious playing career before joining the London club in 1996.

Born in Strasbourg, France, Arsene Wenger began playing football for the nearby village football team of FC Duttlenheim before being recruited to play for regional amateur side AS Mutzig. While studying for a Master’s degree in Economics, Wenger played for several amateur football sides before turning professional in 1978, where he played for RC Strasbourg. His career as a professional player was short-lived, however, and upon attaining a manager’s diploma he was appointed coach of the club’s youth team.

Indeed, when you think of Peru what often springs to mind are images of forgotten Inca temples, wild Amazon jungles and forgotten tribes. However, whilst Peru is renowned for its beautiful historical attractions, there is a new undercurrent of tourism growing in the popular South American travel destination.

As such, visitors are flocking to Peru to seek out the country's reputation for extreme sports; and one of the most popular of these sports is paragliding. Peru's beautiful mountainous terrain and vast unspoilt landscape provide scenic views that make it an unforgettable location for paragliding. What's more, low-turbulence laminar winds make Peru an ideal location for practicing those difficult paragliding manoeuvres that most weather conditions would not permit.

After two and a half years in the job, Ramon Calderon has resigned from his position as president of popular Spanish football club Real Madrid, after allegations of a vote-rigging scandal. Vice president Vicente Boluda has now taken over as the club's president for the remainder of the 2008/09 season, with the next election to be held in the summer of 2009.

Calderon was elected into office in July 2006 to replace Luis Gomez-Montejano, beating Juan Palacios by a narrow margin in the voting to become Real Madrid's 17th president. When running for president, Calderon promised the signings of Chelsea's Arjen Robben, AC Milan's Kaka and Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas, but in his time at Real Madrid, Calderon was only joined by Robben from that list.

Mon, 28 Jul 2008 01:20:01 +0000

Copenhagen - This year's Africa Day celebration in Copenhagen marked the inauguration of the "Right to Play Cup," a human rights soccer championship co-organized by the Danish African Soccer Academy (DASAC) and Youth for Human Rights Denmark". DASAC is the creation of former professional soccer player Hamid Faiz Junior and the event sought to encourage young African children in the city to become involved in sports, not drugs and crime.

The main attraction of the day was a soccer tournament, pitting the Star Team (Stjerneholdet), former professional athletes including past members of the national soccer team, against a team of African players.

The event raised funds to help build a playing field and school for a soccer academy Mr. Faiz runs for 300 street children in Malindi, Kenya.
