Re: Slow site

Tue, 28 Jun 2016 11:00:37 +0000

I was using this forum from time to time as a guest user and I must say, the site looks and performs a lot nicer now after the overhaul. Great job admin

Hi James

Much better now, thanks. It may be due to the new design (very nice!) but also the video ads have gone

Cheers

Hi bmovie

Please could you let us know whether you are still experiencing these problems now that the new design is live?

thanks

Re: Slow site

It's just this site. I also get a message that comes up telling me that "the script on this site has stopped working"

We haven't changed anything recently, so I don't know what might be causing this.

Hopefully the new mobile-friendly design of the site is only a few weeks away - it's possible you may find that works better.

I would respectfully ask that you don't use ad-blocking software as this site can only exist through the revenue from advertising.

Are you absolutely sure that you're not seeing the same problems on websites other than this one?

Slow site

Fri, 04 Dec 2015 10:45:40 +0000

Hi James

It seems be taking me for ever to navigate around the SE1 website (its taking time for this message to type). The slowness and hanging seems to have started as a result of Google adds now all being videos. Is there a way I can switch these adds off?

Cheers

Re: How Do i Edit / Delete a post?

Wed, 25 Nov 2015 11:02:33 +0000

The edit button is in the grey bar underneath your post but only shows up for a limited time (about 30 minutes I think) to give you a chance to correct typos etc.

(I have replied to your email)

How Do i Edit / Delete a post?

Re: "Database not found" message and slow site

Hi Gavin

Yes thanks it is a known issue and our hosting company (Positive Internet) have been dealing with it.

"Database not found" message and slow site

Mon, 21 Sep 2015 09:29:34 +0000

Hi James

The site was inaccessible for about 20 minutes this morning, though it seems to be working now, albeit slowly (though the slow part might be my end). I was getting plain text saying "Database not found. If this is a new installation..."

I'm sure you're already aware, but thought I'd let you know just in case.

Thanks

Gavin

Re: Request: posting pictures on this forum

Thu, 25 Jun 2015 10:43:57 +0000

Hi vicd

It's a fair suggestion but there are several reasons I would be reluctant to go down this path:

- Storing files costs money and bandwidth
- There is potential for people to abuse the system to share inappropriate content
- There are implications in terms of copyright and other rights and legal responsibilities

I'd rather leave file storage and management to specialists.

I wouldn't rule it out but there are higher priorities for improving this website at the moment.

Request: posting pictures on this forum

Thu, 25 Jun 2015 10:18:48 +0000

James, it would be great if we could post pictures directly here, rather than having to post them elsewhere and then provide a link. My biggest problem with that is that Google+ doesn't seem to respect one's privacy when sharing photos publicly, which is less than ideal. I also think that having photos directly on this forum would enhance your website's status as the go-to online local news resource for se1.

Re: Can you smell chicken?

Sat, 21 Mar 2015 09:19:13 +0000

Sorry Eddie, just read your post where you say people such as myself are "ganging up" on you. I think therein lies the problem with yourself and religion, a victim mentality of huge proportions. If somebody has a difference of opinion, they are "ganging up", they are "attacking", as if in some pre-planned, organised way. It's not the case Edward/Islam/Christianity/Hinduism/Buddhism/Judaism/Scientology etc. we simply do not agree with your world view and therefore we challenge it. Stop being so paranoid

Re: Can you smell chicken?

Sat, 21 Mar 2015 09:11:22 +0000

I shall let you have the lat word on this Eddie boy, as I know you will (quite literally) not be able to rest until you do. Just to clarify, neither Christians or Muslims are "races" so your cry of "racism" is facile.
All religions are stupid, moronic, cretinous, etc. One religion above all others at the moment has managed to stifle criticism/parody of it both here and abroad through violence and intimidation. That is a bad thing, I hope you will agree.
Signing off in the hope that you and the testically intumescent Rev are blissfully happy together.

Re: Can you smell chicken?

Sat, 21 Mar 2015 03:25:05 +0000

And - what have you lot done to justify your calling others weaselly? You are ranting on a local forum where there are no muslim posters that I am aware of. All you are doing is telling each other how bad Islam is. I doubt you are drawing cartoons or doing anything else that sets you apart from those you basically accuse of cowardice. THAT"s what I abhor. I find THAT cowardly and weaselly.

And that's why I think that, as opposed to you, Rev Goddard needs a wheelbarrow to carry around his balls: not because he p*ssed of conservatives, not because he did something for islam, but purely because he's got courage, because it seems his prime instinct is to act on his beliefs and is not scared of the consequences. More than that I agree with him, I respect him. If there were more people like him, the world would be a better place. What do you do to make the world a better place?

Re: Can you smell chicken?

Sat, 21 Mar 2015 03:17:26 +0000

You can fool yourself as much as you like, but you DO NOT tear into Christianity as much as a you do Islam. You make some mildly disparaging comments about Christians, but it's so transparent that you only do that to set yourself up to lay into Islam. I could not care less about Islam, what I abhor is this hypocrisy. If at least you showed the courage to stand by your beliefs, but no, you hide behind your perceived injustice of being called a racist bla bla bla. You lot have called my posts boring, repetitive and whatever else, yet you can't leave it alone, you even gang up, the three of you to show some sort of united front, or make me feel I am up against a majority. I couldn't care less - I have the courage of my convictions. You can turn up in your thousands, you are still just 1 to me.

So do I, but I will say that I think sometimes with these forums, the moderators/admin' can often save us posters from ourselves.
You can try and justify your crude comments all you like, you're not a satirist, you're just insulting and hiding behind Charlie Hebdo does not disguise that. For one, CH satirised EVERYBODY, you invariably isolate a particular group and insult them. Not even directly, to their faces, but on SE1, anonymously and to people who most likely aren't even Muslim. So basically, you can glorify your comments all you like, at the end of the day they are just gratuitous insults meant to upset people. On top of all that, when you complain that "no comment" is the future, you are contributing to that by abusing free speech to indulge in your agenda. Now, THAT is my opinion.
Well, good for YOU and YOUR opinion. Thank goodness (not God) for the right to free expression and differing opinions. If you read my post, I was tearing into Christianity and Islam. If you wish, I'll also opine on the other fairy-tale cults out there. As I said, I understand James' reluctance to allow these type of comments on his site as there is one particular brand of religion at the moment which works themselves into such a tizz at any criticism/parody of their "holy book" that they are prepared to do harm to folks who say it. I just wish people were a bit more up-front as to why they have been obliged to stifle freedom of expression. It kind of reminds me of the mohammed cartoon "controversy", when the media outlets of the U.K collectively bottled it but used all manner of weaselly words to justify their decision not to show them, even though the cartoons were central to the story. Why didn't they just say they were scared of "insulting" islam because of violent reprisals? I would have respected them more. I respect your views (but disagree with them) but as yet, nobody is the sole arbiter of what constitutes "gratuitous insults". Long may it remain so.

Post finished early, If a religion of 1 billion plus adherents do not have the inner strength to ignore lampooning of their deity, I would suggest that there is something fundamentally weak about their faith.
What you posted was deliberately phrased to be provocative in the extreme.

I do not see what is gained by throwing around crude remarks which many people will take as a fundamental attack on their faith. It's just bad manners, really.

Would you say the same things in face-to-face conversation with Christians or Muslims?

I think you undermine your own argument by being offensive for the sake of it.
I have had these types of conversations with Christians and Muslims. Thankfully, they're not all fruit loops. I simply do not see my remarks as being "crude" or bad manners. I am not criticising those who worship these two historical non-entities. I do reserve the right to question/parody/criticise these long-dead "visionaries". Who's to say that in 2,000 years time there will not be a church of Psychic Sally? Her comments and her "insights" are no less valid than these two. You of course reserve the right to remove my posts, but let's be honest here James, you did it out of fear of offending Muslims who have shown in the past that they are more than willing to harm people who criticise Islam and "the prophet".
Was the "Life of Brian" a fundamental attack on people's faith? Is Andre Serrano's "P@@s Christ" offensive for the sake of it? Was Salman Rusdie's Satanic Verses provocative in the extreme? And let's not forget the brave folks at Charlie Hebdo. I would suggest that they were shining examples of free expression and should be protected at all costs. If a religion of 1 billion plus adherents does not have the inner strength to ignore criticism a

James, please tell me where my post was "inflammatory". I know that certain individuals would love to curtail our free speech (and unfortunately, it looks like they are succeeding.) Is the ridiculing of long-dead "religious" figures against the rules?
Read a bit of Christopher Hitchens, he summed up the whole cultist nonsense far better than I can.
