Comment on Vineyard Planting Weekend – Day 4 – Planting is Done! by Jared Skolnick Tue, 03 Aug 2010 01:10:24 +0000 Hi Dan, I'd say that anything over a half acre requires more than a weekend effort. And while you could probably maintain an acre on your own in retirement, you'd likely need help planting and you'd be at it much of your time (in season). One of the smaller vineyards here, about 5-acres, has one person managing it FULL TIME. Good luck! It's a challenge, but very rewarding!
Comment on Vineyard Planting Weekend – Day 4 – Planting is Done! by Dan Tue, 03 Aug 2010 00:01:45 +0000 Hey, thanks for the info. I was considering buying 85 MI acres in hopes of planting a large vineyard and maybe an orchard (maybe a retirement job after dentistry, winery, etc.). After seeing the back-breaking work to plant 300 sq ft, I am certainly reconsidering the idea of planting 15 acres of vines!!! Maybe I will start with a small spot in my 3 acre yard. Thanks for the blog and the info.
Comment on First Leaf Tissue Analysis by Ron C. Sat, 24 Jul 2010 00:58:27 +0000 What is the ph of the soil sample? If it's in an acceptable the range then follow their reccomendations on the additions needed. If not correct the soil ph first. If you don't the vines might not be able to uptake the changes you make in the first place. One suggestion for organic calcium additions is bonemeal.
Comment on Grape Growth – Problems? by Ron C. Thu, 22 Jul 2010 02:59:06 +0000 Looking at the pictures you provided I'd say you have a problem with black rot. When I had chardonnay in my small vineyard I found it to be very susceptible to it. If you can keep it under control from budbreak thru 3-4 weeks post fruit set you should be able to get your fruit to harvest free of black rot.
Comment on Exposing the Ripening Fruit by Jared Skolnick Thu, 22 Jul 2010 00:41:56 +0000 Thanks, Ron. That's a great tip!
Comment on Exposing the Ripening Fruit by Ron C. Sat, 17 Jul 2010 18:29:09 +0000 The vines are looking real nice. You might want to consider removing leaves from the morning side only on your vines if the rows are run north-south. That way the clusters can get more sunlight but not get overly heated by the sun during the afternoon. I do agree with you completely that canopy management is the best(and most important) thing you can do to help cut down on disease outbreaks. |
