The bassists of Coachella: Celebrating the oft-unsung heroes who propel the booties

Wed, 26 Apr 2017 12:57:12 GMT

On various stages at the Coachella Music and Arts Festival, which commenced its second weekend on Friday, the singers, synth players and guitarists stood front and center as cameras projected billboard-sized images of them. While the musical peacocks conveyed oh-so-deep imagery with their co-conspirators hogging the limelight on the front line, the roughneck bassists and their compatriots on the drums ran the rhythmic engines below, their calloused fingers guiding the direction.

The second weekend of Coachella included stellar performances from the headliners, in addition to other highlights. On Friday night Radiohead performed another set and Thom Yorke quipped, "Maybe this time you can hear me."

Clearly, Yorke and band didn't actually cover the song but one fan has paired footage of the group's lively rendition of 'Myxomatosis' at their Berkeley show earlier this month with audio of the Latin hit. There have also been calls for Radiohead to cancel their upcoming gig in Israel .

Radiohead are still on tour in support of their latest album, A Moon Shaped Pool , and lately a couple of viral videos have surfaced that remind you that, hey, the world's most serious band can be funny! There were jokes during technical difficulties at Coachella and pranks during technical difficulties in Berkeley, and some angel made a video of Vladimir Putin "singing" "Creep."

Roger Waters & Thurston Moore Join Arts Community Open Letter Asking Radiohead To Boycott Israel Shows

Tue, 25 Apr 2017 19:52:42 GMT

Radiohead have been in the news a great deal recently. With a live set that's currently wowing critics and fans - and with a highly-anticipated headline show at Glastonbury this summer it seems as if the year could be very kind to the Oxford band.

Radiohead's Hilarious Cover Of 'Gasolina' Not Remotely Real

Tue, 25 Apr 2017 17:23:21 GMT

To be clear, Radiohead did not cover the reggaeton hit "Gasolina" at the band's April 17 show in Berkeley, Calif. But a video that's surfaced online sure makes it seem like they did.

This video of Radiohead covering 'Gasolina' is the best kind of fake

Tue, 25 Apr 2017 12:06:00 GMT

The video is actually from Radiohead's gig on April 17 in Berkeley, California. And Thom Yorke is raging at the furious rhythm of "Myxomatosis," a song about being "skinned alive" like rabbits: @thedameupstairs @Zareh3000 THIS.

How To Sell Albums In The Digital Era [News]

Tue, 25 Apr 2017 09:39:13 GMT

I don't know how we've come to this but we live in a world where musicians really don't make that much money selling their records. Social media platforms have allowed artists to bypass labels and mainstream radio stations but there is a downside to this musical free-for-all.

As day gave way to night during the final hours of Coachella 2017, a collective heave seemed to permeate the acreage in and around the polo grounds. The hard heat had subsided and the festival went into its final lap.

The artist's performance during the second weekend of the festival was noticeably more playful. At the end of the night, he thanked the crowd for helping make his new album.

Crystal-Haired 'Radiohead' Ant Discovered

Mon, 24 Apr 2017 18:55:11 GMT

"No killing moths or putting boiling water on the ants," the band Radiohead intoned in its creepy, computerized 1997 track "Fitter Happier." A new species named after the band would probably appreciate the sentiment.

The Radiohead ant: A new species of 'silky' ant grows fungus gardens for food

Mon, 24 Apr 2017 16:22:54 GMT

The ants of the genus Sericomyrmex - literally translated as 'silky ants' - belong to the fungus-farming ants, a group of ants that have figured out how to farm their own food. The silky ants are the less well-known relatives of the famous leaf-cutter ants - well-studied, photogenic model organisms that you simply cannot avoid if you take a trip to the Neotropics.

In Search of Guitars on This Year's Hip-Hop-and-EDM-Dominated Coachella Lineup

Sun, 23 Apr 2017 23:40:00 GMT

Earlier this month, when the New Yorker profiled Paul Tollett , the CEO of Goldenvoice and the man responsible for the industry-unto-itself that is Coachella, they made a point to acknowledge that Tollett was "showing his age by continuing to headline rock bands like Radiohead." Anyone who witnessed the sprawling, practically endless crowd that amassed for DJ Snake's Outdoor Stage set Saturday night - a crowd that at least seemed to dwarf Friday night's crowd for Radiohead - would feel this sentiment had been affirmed.

Radiohead Bounce Back With Masterful Coachella Weekend Two Set

Sun, 23 Apr 2017 19:00:40 GMT

"If I could be who you wanted all the time," coos Thom Yorke on "Fake Plastic Trees" midway through Radiohead's encore during weekend two of Coachella. It's nearing the end of a largely victorious set on the main stage and it appears that Yorke and co. have more than made up for last weekend's sound problems, which saw them stop playing twice, much to the chagrin of many expectant Radiohead fans.

Radiohead started a sonic revolution 25 years ago, and is still leading it

Sun, 23 Apr 2017 16:37:59 GMT

The legendary band, which now tours almost as rarely as it puts out studio albums sells out most U.S. shows within seconds. But if you are fortunate enough to have a ticket drop in your lap - as I did for Radiohead's recent stop at Portland's Moda Center - you'll see a modern performance of pop-rock art that's still more than worthy of the band's reputation as one of the most innovative music groups of all time.
