Demolition of iconic Yardarm restaurant underway

Yardarm Lounge co-owner Gail Oakes slowly walks away from the demolition of her iconic eatery, which began being partially demolished Wednesday, March 14. Oakes purchased the property in 1997 and will rebuild. "I hate to be the one who brought it down," she said Wednesday while watching the building come down.

Three injured in Hernando crash

Three Citrus County residents were injured Saturday after their pickup truck turned in front of another vehicle at a Hernando-area intersection. At about 8:05 p.m., Jeff Richard Lapanne, 57, of Homosassa, and his passengers Nichole Mandate, 29, also of Homosassa, and Kelly Eastman, 36, of Hernando, were traveling north on U.S. 41 in a white 1982 Dodge Ram pickup truck approaching the intersection with County Road 486, according to Florida Highway Patrol .

A young Homosassa woman was injured in a Columbia County vehicle crash that also took the life of a pedestrian. On Thursday night on Interstate 75, south of Lake City, 19-year-old Madison Short, of Homosassa, was riding in the passenger seat of a 2014 Ford Fusion driven by 20-year-old Karina Hernandez of West Palm Beach, according to Florida Highway Patrol .

An 18-year-old Homosassa woman is accused of leading police on a high-speed chase and bringing remnants of a dangerous concoction of drugs into jail. At about 2:43 a.m. on Thursday, a Citrus County sheriff's deputy patrolling on U.S. 19 near the Crystal River Mall spotted a Ford Fusion traveling southbound, reaching speeds close to 80 mph.

Woman loses part of her leg following dog attack

A young Homosassa woman who was attacked last Thursday by her dog lost a portion of her leg to amputation and her family is raising money to help pay medical bills. Since the 4-year-old pit bull terrier mix did not have a county license and veterinarians could not determine whether it had been vaccinated, the Citrus County Animal Shelter had to immediately euthanize the dog Thursday to see if it had rabies.

Woman severely injured by dog

According to the Citrus County Sheriff's Office, deputies at about 11 a.m. on Thursday responded to a home off South Maxwell Point in Homosassa, where they found the homeowner, 20-year-old Jessica Calhoun, with serious bites on her body, especially her legs. Calhoun and her boyfriend, Robert Guerra, told police their 4-year-old female pit bull terrier mix attacked Calhoun at home while she was on the phone.

Drug sting nets several arrests

A recent Citrus County Sheriff's Office drug-sting dubbed Operation Boomerang resulted in the arrests of several Citrus County residents, including the owner of a Crystal River-area car wash. Detectives and deputies with the sheriff's Tactical Impact Unit - the narcotics unit - began collecting evidence against known dealers in the area by making undercover drug buys.
