My pilgrimage: Chapter One

I suppose it was the Rachmaninoff piano concertos that gave me my first glimpse of a pilgrimage. Not knowing one from the other I assumed, at the receptive ages of four and five years old, that these separate concertos were all one, big, long piece of music.

Valentine concert set at Summerset BRENTWOOD A - Virtuoso pianist Joan Cifarelli and her trio will perform a program of the well-known love songs of such composers as Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern and others at 3 p.m. Feb. 12. From jazz to classical gigs and everything in between, Cifarelli has worked in collaboration with numerous Bay area theater companies, as well as the Marin Symphony and the San Francisco Symphony. In addition, she serves as the primary accompanist for Concord High School's choirs and Brentwood's Liberty High School choir.

Cole Porter wrote scores of hit songs for theatre and films from the 1920s to the '50s, including High Society, Kiss Me Kate and Anything Goes. Many of the lyrics are easily remembered, such as Night and Day and I Love Paris, while others are memorable for different reasons, such as: "If your blonde won't respond when you flatter 'er, tell her what Tony told Cleopatterer", from the Shakespeare song in Kiss Me Kate.
