Upstate NY father, son end 72-year run at service station in Schenectady

A 96-year-old service station will shut down in two weeks, a victim of changing times, aging bones and children finally listening to their parents -- and not going to work there. The Russell family's stewardship of Mattice's Service Station will end Aug. 31, when Richard Russell Jr. departs for a job as a school monitor and turns the lights out at the Altamont Avenue garage where his father and uncle started spending time as boys in the 1940s.

The Great Flats, or the Schenectady Aquifer, is a "unique groundwater resource and is one of the most productive aquifers in New York State" so says the Schenectady County website. Living up to its name, Mom, sis and myself found the Great Flats Nature Trail a perfectly horizontal trail cushioned by a bed of grass.




Homeless man found with child porn, Rotterdam police say

A homeless man was arrested on child pornography charges Tuesday after a local business found a cell phone containing sexually explicit photos and called the police, officers said. The photos depicted what appeared to be children of various ages engaged in sexual activity, Rotterdam police said.




Rotterdam moves to protect drinking water from flood risk

Rotterdam officials are pushing a $1.2 million plan to protect the town's drinking water from extreme floods, like those from two superstorms in 2011 when the Mohawk River rose almost high enough to knock out the water supply. Under the plan, a new water well has been drilled at the town well field on Rice Road, near the river.

Rotterdam police warn residents of burglary spree

Three separate burglaries and attempted burglaries of homes in and around town have occurred this past weekend, Rotterdam police said. Reported incidents occurred during the late night and early morning hours of Friday and Saturday in or near Hollywood Avenue and East Campbell Road with multiple attempts in area of Risoli Lane, Mary Lane, Garrison Avenue and Glen Court.




Amsterdam awarded $92K grant for sewer fix

The city of Amsterdam has been awarded a $920,000 state grant to address two ongoing water and sewer infrastructure problems, while other sewer leaks in the city persist. The grant was announced Tuesday by Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara, D-Rotterdam.

Las Vegas entertainer and illusionist Steve Wyrick made a helicoper "appear" out of thin air Tuesday to help celebrate the opening of The Landing Hotel , the new hotel connected to the Rivers Casino & Resort in Schenectady. Wyrick performed several tricks before the main event, including those using wedding rings and a $100 bill from people in the VIP audience that wowed the crowd of local business and civic leaders and news media.
