Large sign, message board approved for Schenectady harbor project

The Zoning Board of Appeals has granted variances that clear the way for a developer to move ahead with construction of a 30-foot-high pylon sign and 12-foot-wide electronic message board at the entrance of a $150 million mixed-used and waterfront project beside Rivers Casino & Resort. The panel voted 5-0 Thursday at a special meeting to also allow a 265-square-foot setback, which along with the height of the sign and width of the message board all exceed what city zoning laws permit.

Police say around 5 p.m. the bandit walked into the store on Mariaville Road where he showed a knife, grabbed an unknown amount of money from the cash register before fleeing on foot toward Mariaville Road.

A popular hiking area in New York with steep gorges and numerous waterfalls is closing down for pesticide treatments to fight an insect that damages hemlock trees. The Department of Environmental Conservation says the Plotter Kill Preserve in Schenectady County will be closed Monday through Wednesday.
