2019 Genesis Essentia Concept | Insights on an elegant design

Fri, 06 Apr 2018 17:00:00 EDT

(image) One of the biggest stunners of the New York Auto Show came from an unlikely stand — that of Genesis, Hyundai's nascent luxury spinoff. The Genesis Essentia Concept was described as a multi-motor EV with a 0-60 time of 3 seconds and enough silicon to pass the Turing test, but that's not what made it special. It stood out because it's downright gorgeous, a proper show car seemingly plucked from the golden age of pre-OPEC oil embargo dream machines.

No more V12 engines for Mercedes-AMG

Fri, 06 Apr 2018 15:01:00 EDT

(image) We were granted a bit of time with the head of Mercedes-AMG, Tobias Moers, during the New York Auto Show last week. Among other topics, we asked him about AMG's famed V12 engines and whether they have much of a future with AMG. It seems they don't. Moers told us that he doesn't feel they're necessary for AMG's products, especially vehicles unique to the AMG brand such as the AMG GT.

Porsche 911 GT3 gets no turbos or hybrid, at least for now

Mon, 02 Apr 2018 11:15:00 EDT

(image) Andreas Preuninger, the head of Porsche's GT division, owns a 2012 Ram 1500 long-box. He mostly uses it to haul his motorcycles. It apparently won't fit in his parking spot at work. It's a far cry from the lightweight, track-focused 2018 Porsche 911 GT3 RS that was revealed this month at the Geneva Motor Show, though both vehicles were built for a specific purpose.

Sunday Drive: Big debuts from the Big Apple dominated the headlines

Sun, 01 Apr 2018 09:00:00 EDT

(image) New York Auto Show week has come and gone, and, not surprisingly, the week's biggest bits of news came from the halls of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in NYC. Our favorite debut from New York was the Lincoln Aviator, a sharp-dresses crossover that looks lovely inside and out, and sits on underpinnings at least partly derived from the Ford Mustang.

VW Atlas Tanoak: Would it make sense to build it?

Thu, 29 Mar 2018 10:50:00 EDT

(image) Perhaps the biggest surprise of the New York Auto Show was the Volkswagen Atlas Tanoak pickup truck. And one of the things that make the Tanoak so intriguing is how it seems pretty feasible to bring to market. It's based on the Atlas, which already has powertrains certified for emissions in America, and at least the front half wouldn't likely need much, if any work to make sure it passes U.S. safety standards. And like the Atlas, it uses the MQB modular platform found in everything from the afor

2019 Mazda CX-3 crossover updated with a tad more power and refinement

Wed, 28 Mar 2018 17:30:00 EDT

(image) Mazda's smallest vehicle, the CX-3 subcompact crossover, is getting a refresh for the 2019 model year. Visually, you'd be hard-pressed to tell what changed, and that's because not much did. The grille now has slats that are grouped in pairs, and the rear taillights have been redesigned. But there are a number of changes aside from visuals that separate this model from the 2018.

Not surprisingly, the engine and its 156-hp-per-liter output are the product of the men from Maranello. The Ferrari-based V8 pushes the Levante Trofeo to 60 miles per hour in 3.7 seconds and on to a top speed of 187 mph.

Six months of spy shots clued us in to evolutionary exterior on this fifth generation, which Subaru dubs "a more rugged style." Taking cues from the Ascent, instead of bodysides decorated with a couple of character lines, Subaru designers accentuate the sculpture of the entire span. In front, A larger, black gloss-finish grille cuts deeper into the bumper from the top, cladding around the lower into reac

2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback: Plastic hatch and other fun facts

Wed, 28 Mar 2018 13:40:00 EDT

(image) Historically, the Toyota Corolla hasn't been associated with words like "interesting," "exciting" or anything resembling enthusiasm, with the obvious exception of the earlier rear-drive models. But the 2019 Corolla Hatchback seems different. It looks aggressive. It's going to be available with a manual. And since Toyota says that being fun-to-drive is the top reason for buying a small hatchback, here's hoping it will indeed be fun. But besides these tidbits, there are other interesting facets to
