Gegard Mousasi Submits Mark Munoz in Round One

2014-05-31T18:56:46Z

Gegard Mousasi has always been known as an outstanding striker. He's also known to have better than advertised submission skills. But at UFC Fight Night 41, Mousasi showed off some excellent takedown defense and ground positioning skills en-route to a submission victory.

Early on, Munoz shot in and lifted his opponent up, looking for a slam. But Mousasi managed to turn things over mid-air, ending up on top. From there he shirked takedowns, struck, and eventually took his opponent's back for the rear naked choke.

Mousasi is the real deal.

Legless Boy Named Isaiah Bird Wrestles, Captures Chris Weidman's Attention

2014-05-30T18:49:58Z

There are miracles in our world that often go unnoticed.  Luckily, the miracle that is 6 year old Isaiah Bird is getting noticed due to his own amazing capabilities in conjunction with some attention from UFC Middleweight Champion Chris Weidman.

You see, according to Newsday, Isaiah, who was born in East Meadow, Long Island placed third in his age group and weight class at the New York Kid Wrestling Championships at Bay Shore this past March, then finished sixth in a national tournament in New Jersey known as "War at the Shore."  Pretty cool, right.  But then you hear that the boy was born legless and lives in a shelter in Freeport with his mother and two year old brother, and you realize the truth.

Amazing.

Enter UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman.  When Weidman first heard a story from a News 12 video posted on Facebook about Isaiah, he was blown away.  And that eventually led to a fundraiser planned at his gym in Garden City, with all of the proceeds going to help Isaiah and his family.

"Who wouldn't want to help a kid out like that?" Weidman said. "Anything I can do for a local wrestler, especially a kid who's young and struggling, I was down."

See below for information on the fundraiser.  Why not stop by for a great cause?

The facts according to Newsday: The event at Power MMA on 1 Commercial Ave. begins at noon with an open workout and follow-up question-and-answer session with Weidman. The fundraiser (donations start at $5) also includes youth and teen wrestling seminars and a meet-and-greet with UFC fighters Aljamain Sterling (Uniondale), Al Iaquinta (Wantagh), Eddie Gordon (Freeport), Gian Villante (Levittown) and Pete Sell (Bay Shore).

Isaiah will be there as well.

Gina Carano Training at Black House

2014-05-22T16:56:52Z

According to the International Business Times, there has been another Gina Carano sighting. This one, however, would seem to add some reinforcement to UFC President Dana White's confidence that the UFC will eventually sign the former Strikeforce champion.

You see, there have been rumors of Gina Carano training at Black House, a place made famous by some of the best fighters in the world such as Anderson Silva, Cat Zingano, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, and Lyoto Machida. And recently, Black House mixed martial artist James Moontasri posted a photo of Carano holding up a "Moon Walker" shirt inside the Los Angeles Black House MMA gym.

First off, it would be hard to find a better place to train than Black House.  Second, I have to admit that Carano coming back to women's MMA would give it a huge boost.  Yes, Ronda Rousey is huge in the sport.  But Carano coming back would ALMOST be like the female version of Royce Gracie coming back to fight Matt Hughes in the Octagon.

Cool stuff.

Former Jet Lit and Jason Statham Co-Star Silvio Simac Starts Martial Arts School in Hayes

2014-04-30T16:28:11Z

Silvio Simac got his big movie break in the film Unleashed - also known as Danny The Dog - where he fought martial arts movie legend Jet Li and starred alongside Morgan Freeman.  Later, in 2008, he found himself in Transporter 3 with Jason Statham.  Why do I tell you all of this?  Because getwestlondon is reporting that Simac is starting Simac Mixed Martial Arts School at Harlington School, in Pinkwell Lane, Hayes.

Simac is a former world, European and 14-times UK champion in Tae Kwon Do.  He launched the school in partnership with Matt Fiddes, a famous trainer who was the bodyguard for Michael Jackson, as well as Naeem Qureshi, who runs Olympian Fitness in Pump Lane, Hayes.

"I had followed Matt's career for years, and we just got talking. Naeem and I have been friends for a long time, but this is the first time we have done business together."

Sounds like it could be an interesting place.  Tae Kwon Do is often known as a high level kicking art, and there seems as if there will be other influences there as well. If you would like to book a trial lesson, email info@simacmma.com, or drop into Olympian Fitness in Pump Lane, Hayes. Alternatively, visit www.simacmma.com.

Jon Jones Lets Chuck Liddell Have it After UFC 172 On Instagram

2014-04-30T16:07:00Z

Prior to UFC 172, former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Chuck Liddell was asked how he would do against current Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones in his prime.  Liddell answered that he would knock him out in his prime.  Further, he believed that Glover Teixeira, a teammate of his, would defeat Jones as well. Fast forward to UFC 172.  Any of you who saw the fight know that Jones put on a display of outstanding and rather diverse striking, defeating Teixeira easily.  Jones literally hit home with axe kicks, front arm elbows, and more.  It was highly impressive.  Afterwards, probably in retaliation for what Liddell had said above, Jones posted the following under a picture of a rather unhappy Liddell. "Talking all that trash before the fight.. you mad bro?" The Instagram message has caused message boards to light up everywhere, with many negative comments coming Jones' way. Unfair in many ways.  When Liddell was asked the question that prompted this, he could have answered that he's retired and it doesn't matter.  He could have avoided this.  Don't get me wrong, I certainly don't have a problem with "The Iceman" offering an opinion, especially when he was asked the question- he didn't offer it up on his own.  That said, he should have known Jones wouldn't necessarily like the comment.  So in a way, he asked for it. On the flip side, Jones surely could have let things go himself.  By attacking a legend like Liddell, he's opening himself up to all of his fans.  That said, once Liddell opened his mouth, he was fair game.  Both guys could have avoided what they said/posted.  Both guys were not out of their wheelhouse with their comments/posts.  But as we all know, once you say or write something, it's fair game and open for interpretation and comment. Interesting stuff. Khabib Nurmagomedov Defeats Rafael Dos Anjos by Unanimous Decision

2014-04-19T19:00:49Z

Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Rafael Dos Anjos at the UFC on FOX 11.  Check out how it all went down here. After a very long period of relative inaction, Dos Anjos landed a hard kick.  Then Nurmagomedov shot in and achieved the takedown.  Dos Anjos eventually fought his way to an upright position, but Nurmagomedov took him down again.  Dos Anjos got up, immediately finding himself pressed into the cage wall.  He gained separation.  Nice body kick by Dos Anjos.  Then Nurmagomedov shot in and took his opponent down again.  Dos Anjos grabbed an arm, looking for a Kimura to no avail.  Dos Anjos got back up.  Upon a separation, Dos Anjos landed a solid knee.  Nurmagomedov shot back in after landing an uppercut.  Dos Anjos was able to separate.  Some solid striking by both parties, with Dos Anjos getting the mild edge.  Then came the bell. Based on the amount of takedowns, Nurmagomedov probably took the round.  But it was close, primarily because he did very little on the ground with his takedowns, and Dos Anjos was better on his feet in a mild sense. Early on, after throwing a lot of strikes but missing with most, Nurmagomedov shot in and gained the takedown.  Dos Anjos held a guillotine without his legs hooked in for a period of time.  The Russian got out of the attempt, which was only mildly valid due to the lack of hooks being in.  While on his opponent's back as he attempted to stand, Nurmagomedov landed several knees to the legs.  Then came another takedown.  And until the end of the stanza, Nurmagomedov landed some pretty solid ground and pound. No doubt who took that stanza.  Nurmagomedov is likely in the lead here. Round three saw Dos Anjos attempt a takedown, only to find himself involved in a violent hip throw that sent him to the canvas.  And from there, ground and pound took us to the bell. Nurmagomedov is the real deal. Khabib Nurmagomedov defeats Rafael Dos Anjos by unanimous decision.
