Sat, 19 Aug 2017 05:04:57 UTC

University of Virginia graduate Tina Fey is in rare form as she sheet cakes her way through a monologue destroying Trump, Anne Coulter and the alt-right. (video)

What Happened to All Those Foreclosed Houses?

Sat, 19 Aug 2017 00:15:42 UTC

We know that millions of American families lost their homes after Wall Street's 2007 financial crash. But where did all those houses go? The banksters crash the economy, you lose income and your home, they buy your house at auction, then they rent it to you at an ever-increasing price. The "new way" is the same old story: The rich robbing the rest of us.

War Can Be Ended: It Is a Product of Cultural Choice, Not of "Human Nature."

Fri, 18 Aug 2017 23:10:48 UTC

A prominent meme in American foreign policy is "Peace through Strength," but what I want is "Strength through Peace." Guided by that principle, our foreign policy would no longer be driven by the imperatives of strategic dominance, but by the empathic impulse for creative collaboration with our neighbors around the world, aimed at ensuring every individual physical security and the freedom to pursue his or her own happiness.

Russia-gate's Evidentiary Void

Fri, 18 Aug 2017 21:13:30 UTC

5A cyber-warfare expert sees no technical evidence linking Russia to the Democratic email releases, but The New York Times presses ahead with a new hope that Ukraine can fill the void, reports Robert Parry.

Phoenix Mayor to Trump: Cancel Your Rally

Fri, 18 Aug 2017 20:32:54 UTC

The decision Trump makes about Phoenix awaits. Trump could create another violent clash in Phoenix next Tuesday or he could escape a devastating political silver bullet. Will Trump hold his rally or cancel it? Will other stupefied members of Congress wake up and see the light? We will soon know.

Bannon Fired Open Thread

Fri, 18 Aug 2017 20:00:40 UTC

Open thread to enable OpEdnews members to discuss Steve Bannon leaving the White House

Did you visit this anti-Trump site? The US government wants your IP address

Fri, 18 Aug 2017 19:56:55 UTC

If this extraordinary broad legal order is allowed to stand, Jeff Sessions and the justice department could extend the same type of legal order to a whole host of situations. It should be strongly protested not just in court, but in public and the halls of Congress in the strongest terms possible.

(Sunday Homily) A Chauvinist Jesus Gets Schooled by a Palestinian Mom

Fri, 18 Aug 2017 19:05:44 UTC

If the story about the Syrophonecian mother actually happened, it's somehow comforting to know that Jesus was so human -- more like us than we've been made to think.

Burqa stunt failed to stir anti-Muslim sentiments in Australian Senate

Fri, 18 Aug 2017 18:29:44 UTC

Perhaps taking cue from the Trump-fomented rising tide of ultra-rightists, Neo-Nazis and white supremacists, Australia's right-wing One Nation party leader Pauline Hanson Thursday staged a burqa stunt to stir anti-Muslim sentiments.

The walls close in on Trump; impeachment, the 25th Amendment or - Resignation

Fri, 18 Aug 2017 15:04:03 UTC

By now most observant Americans can see that Donald Trump simply can't carry out the functions of the office of the president; and that he has a very difficult time controlling his emotions, showing clear signs of instability. His behavior is quite unpredictable and he quickly reacts to situations that displease him with extreme anger.

Make America Safe Again

Fri, 18 Aug 2017 13:30:23 UTC

Through six months of Donald Trump the progressive resistance has been united by opposition to his policies. The good news is that we have stopped his legislative program. The bad news is that most Americans don't understand what progressives stand for, other than opposing Trump. Now's the time to bring forward an agenda that emphasizes safety.

Monuments that Offend: To remove, or not?

Fri, 18 Aug 2017 03:07:32 UTC

Perhaps the obvious choices of retaining, removing or destroying these statues might not be the only possibilities. As a visual artist, I do consider the context of art history as well as political history when observing these issues. The best answer might be something that hasn't been considered yet.

A House Divided Against Itself Cannot Stand

Fri, 18 Aug 2017 00:04:50 UTC

It is a great disability for the United States that only a limited number of its citizens are capable of independent thought. Perhaps this is a problem for every country, but it most certainly is a problem for the United States.

Why the GOP Sides With the Klan and the Nazis

Thu, 17 Aug 2017 23:23:01 UTC

Trump will threaten North Korea with nukes, but won't even name the terrorists who showed up in Virginia. And it's very, very hard to find an elected Republican (who isn't a presidential wannabe) who will call this what it is: White Christian Racial Terrorism.

Al-Araqeeb Village: Palestinian Bedouins Refuse to Surrender 116 Times

Thu, 17 Aug 2017 22:42:54 UTC

The epicenter of the ongoing fight is the village of Al-Araqeeb. Not only has Israel destroyed Al-Araqeeb numerous times in violation of international law, it actually delivers a bill to the homeless residents expecting them to cover the cost of the very ruins wrought by the Israeli state.

Movements Are Driving Democratic Party Debate

Thu, 17 Aug 2017 21:55:53 UTC

Democrats are having a big debate about what the party stands for. Defining issues -- Medicare for All, $15 minimum wage, curbing Wall Street, money and politics, balanced trade etc. -- are central to that debate. All this garment rending and hand wringing is excessive. Democrats need a major debate about values and policy. A bit of common sense is in order.

Trump's Neo-Nazis and the Rise of Illiberal Democracy

Thu, 17 Aug 2017 21:18:56 UTC

It appears that the presence of Nazi and Confederate flags, along with the horrible history of millions lost to the Holocaust and slavery, lynchings, church bombings, and the assassination of Black leaders, such as Medgar Evans and Martin Luther King Jr., did little to move Trump to a serious understanding or repudiation of the poisonous historical forces that surfaced in Charlottesville.

Massoud Barzani is shaking from the US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson announcement!

Thu, 17 Aug 2017 19:11:48 UTC

The UN investigation can find the truth about the ISIS Islamic terrorist forces and those who helped them to take that part of Northern Iraq. The UN court of human right can discover the involvement of Massoud Barzani and Turkish President Erdogan. Both leaders above are shaking now; both men can end up in the same court where Slobodan Milo--evi-- of Serbia faced justice.

Will Saturday Night Live Have Don Trump on Again?

Thu, 17 Aug 2017 19:00:51 UTC

SNL had Trump on their show after his racist remarks about Mexicans in 2015. After his remarks about Charlotte, I wonder if they'll have him on again.

Legalizing Prostitution and HIV

Thu, 17 Aug 2017 18:58:05 UTC

In countries where prostitution is legal, women are always conscious about their health and treat themselves if any complication arises.

Freedom of the Press Abused

Thu, 17 Aug 2017 18:53:11 UTC

Though difficult to accept, the time has come to seriously question whether all the obvious anti-Trump media coverage harms the future of American democracy.

Do you know what "unsustainable" means? If not, it's costing you money.

Thu, 17 Aug 2017 18:37:40 UTC

Federal debt is not the same as household, business, state debt. Only the Federal gov can issue new dollars. Other entities must earn or borrow dollars. Therefore, it is a LIE to claim that dollars which can be issued ad hoc will somehow no longer be issued to fund the Federal Gov. This also means the Federal Gov. never has debt in its own currency. It has savings. $20 TRILLION SINCE 1778.

Tomgram: Engelhardt, Welcome to the Post-American World

Thu, 17 Aug 2017 16:58:27 UTC

Let me try to get this straight: from the moment the Soviet Union imploded in 1991 until recently just about every politician and mainstream pundit in America assured us that we were the planet's indispensable nation, the only truly exceptional one on this small orb of ours.

Creative Anti-Nazism

Thu, 17 Aug 2017 16:08:44 UTC

The people of Durham , N.C., have the right idea. Not only have they taken down a Confederate war statue themselves, but they've lined up en masse to turn themselves in for that crime, overwhelming the so-called justice system.

Trump's Civil War

Thu, 17 Aug 2017 15:46:04 UTC

Trump even tweeted a video clip of himself in a WWE professional wrestling match slamming a CNN avatar to the ground and pounding him with punches and elbows to the head. Hateful violence is hardly new to America. But never before has a president licensed it as a political strategy or considered haters part of his political base.

Charlottesville awakening: On Discovering Racism, and Discovering it Anew

Thu, 17 Aug 2017 15:28:12 UTC

The Charlottessville white supremacist/fascist march has pulled the scab off the submerged racism of America -- a racism that for decades has been ignored by most liberal whites but that is a continuing horror for Americans of color, writes TCBH! journalist Dave Lindorff, who says maybe this incident was a needed eye-opener.

Conditions Created to Foster White Nationalism

Thu, 17 Aug 2017 14:00:48 UTC

Chaos in Charlottesville: No One Gave Peace a Chance, Including the Police

Thu, 17 Aug 2017 13:52:29 UTC

Let's be clear about one thing: no one--not the armed, violent, militant protesters nor the police--gave peace a chance during the August 12 demonstrations in Charlottesville, Va. One young woman is dead because of the hate, violence, intolerance, racism and partisanship that is tearing this country apart, and it has to stop.

Anything Goes When You're a Cop in America

Thu, 17 Aug 2017 13:46:52 UTC

President Trump needs to be reminded that no one is above the law, especially the police. Unfortunately, Trump and Jeff Sessions, head of the Justice Department (much like their predecessors) appear to have few qualms about giving police the green light to kill, shoot, taser, abuse and steal from American citizens in the so-called name of law and order.

Taking Nuclear War Seriously

Thu, 17 Aug 2017 00:54:27 UTC

Emmy-Award winning filmmaker John Pilger's latest film, The Coming War on China, deals directly with the new projection of U.S. power into Asia, as well as the toll U.S. aggression has already taken on the people of the region.

Charlottesville: Outrage, Hypocrisy and Obama's Betrayal

Wed, 16 Aug 2017 23:28:49 UTC

Even though Obama spent his two terms in the White House going out of his way to cloak the snarling beast of US exceptionalism and its white supremacist roots in the garb of democracy, he was not embraced by those who prefer their coffee white. Here it is impossible to avoid the fact that Trump's election was in large part a reaction to Obama's race as much as it was to his policies.

Centrist Pundits Paved Way for Trump's 'Alt-Left' False Equivalence

Wed, 16 Aug 2017 21:28:43 UTC

There's no way to suggest that unruly leftists are as bad as neo-Nazis without suggesting that neo-Nazis are no worse than unruly leftists.

Mark Lilla's Polemic about Identity Politics in the Democratic Party is Timely (REVIEW ESSAY)

Wed, 16 Aug 2017 20:39:20 UTC

Today practitioners of identity politics are in power in the Democratic Party. But the Democratic Party is the out-of-power party both at the federal level of government and at the state level in many states. In his polemical new book, Mark Lilla critiques identity politics in the Democratic Party. In my estimate, the practitioners of identity politics in the Democratic Party should temper their brand of identity politics.

Wicked Witch of the West (as many might call her) Presents Majorly Good and Critical Ideas

Wed, 16 Aug 2017 20:05:57 UTC

This is the most intelligent response I've seen regarding the Charlottesville clash, of the vast many I've read. David Swanson also did a commendable piece that supplements this click here--and I note that David is a hero of Debbie Lusignan's, as her recent interview with him well demonstrates.

The Great American Leo Solar Eclipse, Auguat 21, 2017

Wed, 16 Aug 2017 17:05:40 UTC

The Great American Eclipse has captured our attention. Only visible over the entire continental US,it seems to be a great uniter--everyone is going to see it, either in totality or partially. It takes place on 'the heart of the Lion'-Regulus-and it is a call to activate YOUR heart. Look for the hope in you heart and start to live a heart-felt life. It's the only way to live as we throw off the chains of patriarchy.

@YesYoureRacist Crowdsources Social Preferencing

Wed, 16 Aug 2017 15:19:20 UTC

Projects like @YesYoureRacist make the information needed for rational Social Preferencing decisions more widely available and more easily accessed. Ostracism (and its opposite) need no longer be handled retail, by word of mouth at the barber shop and on the phone. We're all just a click away from being, if not famous, at least easily known in some detail to anyone who has reason to care and to look.

In America Propaganda Has Vanquished Truth

Wed, 16 Aug 2017 14:33:56 UTC

Slavery in the Southern states was confined to large agricultural tracts known as plantations. Slaves were the agricultural workforce. This institution long predated the Confederacy and the United States itself. It was an inherited institution from the time that the New World was colonized by European economic interests. Slaves were not a Southern invention.

The Why of "White Supremacy"

Wed, 16 Aug 2017 14:24:01 UTC

The profound human brokenness represented by "white supremacy" can be seen in both moral-spiritual and historical perspectives.

After Charlottesville: If You Fire a Fascist, You Are a Fascist

Wed, 16 Aug 2017 00:05:12 UTC

The upsides of free expression are intangible while the downside risks are terrifyingly brutal. A 2016 Harris poll found that 33% of U.S. employees are afraid to talk about politics at work. Increasingly workers have to worry about losing their jobs as the result of talking about politics outside of work too.

Upcoming Russian military exercises a prelude to invading a NATO country? Simply absurd

Tue, 15 Aug 2017 23:49:51 UTC

In less than a month Russia & Belarus will conduct defensive military exercises routinely scheduled every 4 yrs. & w/in their own territory. In the West they're depicted as an exercise in intimidation, destabilizing, a cover for skullduggery. Russia's Foreign Minister Lavrov says, "accusations these exercises are anything more than defensive preparations are nonsense". As a prelude to invasion of a NATO country? Simply absurd.

America's Liberal Establishment Enables White Nationalist Organizations to Recruit

Tue, 15 Aug 2017 23:32:53 UTC

The liberal establishment has done the heavy lifting to recruit white working-class people into white nationalist organizations.

Ten Years After Financial Crisis, Our Elites Have Learned Nothing

Tue, 15 Aug 2017 23:31:14 UTC

The economic disaster that cost millions of people their jobs and/or their homes, and forced tens of millions to accept lower wages, was 100 percent avoidable if the people responsible for making economic policy had been awake. Turning the story of the housing bubble into a story about the financial crisis is an effort to make issues that are quite simple seem very complicated.

Messages of Forgiveness from Heather Heyer's Parents

Tue, 15 Aug 2017 22:30:53 UTC

Heather Heyer's mother and father apparently lived fairly quiet lives until their daughter was killed, upon which they were thrust into the limelight, interviewed only hours after they lost their daughter. They each look like someone you might stand behind in the grocery store and never really notice, but don't let that fool you. These people are giants of the soul. (Videos)

Trump defends white supremacist/neo-Nazi violence, says "alt-left" also to blame

Tue, 15 Aug 2017 22:24:55 UTC

Donald Trump tried on Tuesday to make an infrastructure announcement but the press conference quickly spiraled out of control when he justified his reprehensible handling of the Charlottesville violence by defending the supremacist/neo-Nazi protest and blaming "both sides," including what he called the "alt-left."

Negotiate With North Korea

Charlottesville driver an agent provocateur?

Tue, 15 Aug 2017 21:50:38 UTC

Charlottesville car attacker Fields may have been an agent provocateur. Divide and rule is a strategy that can help some political causes more than others. Some dark forces may be attempting to seed a race war between Americans.

Charlottesville, White Supremacy, and Why the US Civil War Never Ended

Tue, 15 Aug 2017 21:03:43 UTC

Let us not mince words. If ever a cause was unworthy, that cause was the US Confederacy. If ever a cause was righteously defeated in battle, it was the cause of the US Confederacy. And if ever a flag was -- and is -- an insult to human decency and dignity, it is the Confederate flag. If ever a society was crying out for the aggressive assertion of human rights, racial equality, and justice, it is the United States.

Make America Hate Again

Tue, 15 Aug 2017 19:35:08 UTC

A smaller version of the civil war extends even into the White House, where Bannon and his proteges are doing battle with leveler heads. Let's hope the leveler heads win the civil war in the White House. Let's pray the leveler heads in our society prevent the civil war Trump and Bannon want to instigate in America.

Review of Martin Nowak's Super Cooperators: Altruism, Evolution, and Why We Need Each Other to Succeed

Tue, 15 Aug 2017 19:33:50 UTC

How can cooperation emerge in a world of selfish individuals ruled by Darwinian competition for survival? This is the question that Martin Nowak, Professor of Mathematics and Biology at Harvard University, discusses in Super Cooperators: Altruism, Evolution, and Why We Need Each Other to Succeed. Nowak say, "I propose that 'natural cooperation' be included as a fundamental principle to bolster those laid down by Darwin."

The Economy has been Doing Well

Tue, 15 Aug 2017 19:33:40 UTC

In the past eight year, the U.S. economy has been growing and the stock market rising. Restricting immigration could raise wages; but a fence costly. The wall will cost billions. Tax cuts can stimulate the economy. Repealing the ACA isn't the way to pay for it. Decreasing regulations might increase business hiring. But repealing Dodd-Frank might cause another great recession.

Ft. Lauderdale's studious spring-breakers now inconveniently handcuffed to ...?

Tue, 15 Aug 2017 19:26:32 UTC

As climate change inconveniently sends rising tides to inundate Ft. Lauderdale and Miami on sunny days, a couple of industrious students from a bygone era reminisce and hope to devote some cuffed time to soothe an angered Mother Nature. Oh, for the days when her beaches were enlightened by sun-enriched, bikini-clad, bright art, rather than beleaguered by flooded beaches, streets, storms and dumbing-down Breitbart farks.

Trump Unwittingly Right about Violence 'on Many Sides'

Tue, 15 Aug 2017 19:17:45 UTC

All 'violence' is not the same. Self-defense can sometimes be justified but is usually singled out for condemnation.

Tue, 15 Aug 2017 17:05:38 UTC

How War Pollutes the Potomac River

Tue, 15 Aug 2017 15:53:17 UTC

The Pentagon's impact on the river on whose bank it sits is not simply the diffuse impact of global warming and rising oceans contributed to by the U.S. military's massive oil consumption. The U.S. military also directly poisons the Potomac River in more ways than almost anyone would imagine.

Tomgram: Rebecca Gordon, Is Anything the Moral Equivalent of War?

Tue, 15 Aug 2017 15:39:31 UTC

Since September 11, 2001, the United States has been fighting a "war on terror." Real soldiers have been deployed to distant lands.

Wag the Morons!!

Tue, 15 Aug 2017 13:39:17 UTC

During these trying times, for any of us with even an ounce of rationality, please go out and get the 1997 Barry Levinson film Wag the Dog. This satire ( is it really? ) was originally based on the sexual scandals around our president at the time, Bill ' Ignore my smirks ' Clinton. In reality, this film is really a testament to many of our presidents and how they use phony foreign threats to raise their poll numbers.

Charlottesville: A gun in his face, but he got the photo

Tue, 15 Aug 2017 07:02:04 UTC

Don't look away. Four white neo-Nazis are beating a Black man, crawling on the ground, with their metal poles and a yellow hunk of lumber. The beating continues -- there's blood on the pavement. Our photographer, Zach D. Roberts, continues to shoot -- even as a white militant raises a 9mm pistol to his face.

Tue, 15 Aug 2017 05:54:02 UTC

"Counter-Couture: Handmade Fashion in an American Counterculture" is on exhibit at the Museum of Arts and Design through Aug. 20. The context from which this art emerged was civil rights activism, feminism and an extended, illegal war. Young people were protesting social and political injustice. As we cycle around these same topics again, this exhibit offers delicious food for thought, including the healing power of art.

Birther of a Nation

Tue, 15 Aug 2017 01:40:33 UTC

Everyone has pointed out that The Don is trigger-happy whenever he feels the need to name a group he disdains, like the media, or Mexicans, or Islam, or his Attorney General. Ergo, his wimpy response to Saturday's domestic terror attack was actually tacit approval of their actions.

Charlottesville

Tue, 15 Aug 2017 00:26:43 UTC

The liberal/progressive/left along with the media has abandoned the working class for Identity Politics. Identity Politics teaches that women, blacks, and homosexuals are all victims of white heterosexual males who are characterized as the victimizer class, that is, those who victimize others.

Trump Won't Say It, But We Will: White Terror in Charlottesville

Mon, 14 Aug 2017 23:30:01 UTC

"Many sides"? There are only two sides here: Right and wrong. Murderer and victim. Hatred and love. In the clutch, when it really mattered, the president of the United States refused to pick a side. But we can. We can lay down our lives, one by one if necessary, until we have won.

Most Americans want universal healthcare. What are we waiting for?

Mon, 14 Aug 2017 21:41:01 UTC

NY Times editorial board lambasts Trump

Mon, 14 Aug 2017 18:33:48 UTC

Hellstorm The Documentary

Mon, 14 Aug 2017 15:33:46 UTC

Making peace with Russia is a massive threat to the military/security complex's vast budget and power, and they are not going to allow it. Neither are they going to allow Marine Le Pen and the French voters to break up NATO and the EU in the name of French sovereignty, thereby threatening Washington's power over Europe.

A Preemptive Strike on North Korea Would Be Catastrophic and Illegal

Sun, 13 Aug 2017 23:31:13 UTC

As we stand on the precipice of a disastrous war, these are the right circumstances for Trump to meet with Kim Jong-un. If Trump were to successfully negotiate a peace treaty with North Korea, he would receive plaudits for being a real diplomat. The unthinkable alternative is military action that would cause the deaths of untold numbers of Koreans, Japanese people and Americans.

The Misguided Attacks on ACLU for Defending Neo-Nazis' Free Speech Rights in Charlottesville

Sun, 13 Aug 2017 19:10:23 UTC

Each time horrific political violence is perpetrated that is deemed to be terrorism, a search is immediately conducted for culprits to blame other than those who actually perpetrated the violence or endorsed the group responsible for it. It's usually only a matter of hours before the attack is exploited to declare one's own political views vindicated, and to depict political adversaries as responsible for, if not complicit.

A National Calamity in the Making

Sun, 13 Aug 2017 18:09:53 UTC

Donald Trump responded to the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, by condemning hatred "on many sides." His refusal to call it what it is, and condemn the neo-Nazis, white supremacists, and KKK members who perpetrated this violence, is a dangerous lie that fuels more hatred and violence.

Sandwiched between two superpowers, China and Russia, and little more than 500 miles from the coast of Japan, North Korea's space on Earth is intricately woven into the fabric of one of the most influential regions in the world. So then, how many nuclear warheads is it intelligent for the US to drop on what is effectively China's doorstep? On Japan's doorstep? On Russia's?

Dark Matter: Surrendering our Secrets to Malevolent Forces

Sun, 13 Aug 2017 16:28:53 UTC

We all have a night mind, we all have thought-dreams which, if exposed, perhaps might not get us guillotined but could well kill the image we present to others -- and to ourselves. And this is true even for the most liberated, hip or "woke" among us. Every dark impulse, passing fantasy, every perverse or unsettling notion thrown up by the imp of the mind: all of this available, in endless profusion, 24/7, all over the world.

Murder By Automobile-- Legalized Domestic Terrorism-- and their enablers

Sun, 13 Aug 2017 15:52:59 UTC

What happened in Charlottesville VA is murder. If a Muslim was driving the car, it would be called terrorism. But since it was a white male Christian driver, the mainstream media call it a "clash." Trump, Korea, the Marines, The Photo

Sun, 13 Aug 2017 00:13:29 UTC

As a nation, we have a tendency to try to make things -- flag-raisings, presidents -- fit our perceptions (our hopes and wishes perhaps), so that we don't have to face reality. War is brutal. Talk is cheap.

Trump and the Politics of Nihilism

Sat, 12 Aug 2017 21:44:48 UTC

Ignorance is a terrible wound when it is self-inflicted, but it becomes a dangerous plague when the active refusal to know combines with power. President Trump's lies, lack of credibility, woefully deficient knowledge of the world, and unbridled narcissism have suggested for some time that he lacks the intelligence, judgment and capacity for critical thought necessary to occupy the presidency of the United States.

Sat, 12 Aug 2017 18:53:09 UTC

What's all this American talk about Iran being a rogue state, a scourge of global terrorism? The presence of European officials -- and the absence of American ones -- during the inauguration of President Rouhani was a spectacular demonstration of dissonance and repudiation of American policy.

George Orwell and Mohammed Atta Were Here

Sat, 12 Aug 2017 18:46:26 UTC

Though I'm sitting in this sun bathed apartment, with palm trees just outside, dark plots are being hatched, apparently, for on the wall, there's a Putin calendar, and the music is the Algerian Cheb Hasni belting out "My Way," then "Saddam," an homage to the late Iraqi leader. Not quite believing my eyes, I stare at a plate of potato frittata and blood sausage. Oh, the endless terrors! The Mossad! The C.I.A.!

Magic money working magic on 401(k)s

Sat, 12 Aug 2017 16:50:29 UTC

401(k)s and other defined contribution plans appear to be doing better by workers than the defined benefit plans they've largely replaced. A key reason is magic money: savings built up by stock market investments, compounded by decades of tax-sheltered capital gains and dividends.
