The New Works Ensemble is one of five jazz ensembles operated by Seattle JazzED to provide jazz education for students who otherwise wouldn't have the opportunity to study and play jazz. The groups range from introductory, through beginning and intermediate to advanced plus The New Works Ensemble plays mostly original music.

Seattle multi-instrumentalist Jay Thomas leads his quartet in highlights from an Art of Jazz concert at The Seattle Art Museum on KPLU's Jazz Northwest this Sunday at 1 PM. Jay Thomas is a long-time fixture on the Seattle Jazz scene, having performed with a preceding generation of musicians and now teaching a new generation as he continues to perform.

Guitarist Peter Bernstein's recent appearance at Egan's in Seattle will be featured on Jazz Northwest on Sunday March 4 at 1 PM Pacific on 88.5 KPLU. Peter has been a part of the jazz scene in New York and abroad since 1989. He has played on over 60 recordings as well as festival, concert and club performances with musicians from all generations.

On the next Jazz Northwest from 88.5 KPLU, we'll visit a new music venue in Seattle. It's the Royal Room in Columbia City open only since December. Two large jazz ensembles are featured on this show. First, The Young Person's Composers Orchestra opens with music by Maria Schneider, followed by the Washington Composers Orchestra.

Seattle trumpet player and band leader Thomas Marriott has established an international reputation, toured widely, played on dozens of albums and led seven of his own. Several of his Origin CDs have landed in top ten lists and are played by radio stations across the US. His hometown appearances are always popular, too.

Singer Johanye Kendrick is a recent addition to the Seattle Jazz Scene. She's on the vocal faculty at the Cornish College of the Arts, a violinist in Scrape and appears regularly at Tula's and The Royal Room. She sang some standards and original songs at this month's Art of Jazz concert at the Seattle Art Museum.

The Tall and Small Band is an 11 piece band co-led by Pete Christlieb and Linda Small in L.A. Last Summer Pete and Linda were in Seattle with a Northwest edition of the band at Tula's. This Sunday on Jazz Northwest you can hear them play new arrangements by Bill Holman written specifically for a new CD "High On You" on Bosco Records.

The longest-running weekly jazz gig in Seattle is Wednesday night at the New Orleans Creole Restaurant in Pioneer Square. Beginning in 1986, the late trumpet and sax player and singer Floyd Standifer led his quartet there for 20 years. After his passing the rest of the group continued as The Legacy Quartet now led by drummer Clarence Acox.

A stellar septet of jazz greats played at McCurdy Pavilion during Centrum's Jazz Port Townsend 2011 the last weekend of July. Cuban-born, now American citizen Paquito D'Rivera was nominal leader and spokesman, playing alto sax and clarinet. He played alongside Dizzy Gillespie and other jazz greats who helped bring him to world-wide attention.

Japan has long been very welcoming to American jazz artists, so it's appropriate that the American jazz community should rally to support Japan relief efforts since the earthquake and tsunami devastation of Northeastern Japan. Kelly Eisenhower has sung in many settings from night clubs to symphony halls. She toured and sang with the Boston Pops, and was a soloist as well as an arranger and assistant director of the gospel choir on Gladys Knight's Grammy winning CD, "One Voice". Kelly has two CDs of her own as well as two more soon to be issued.

Sonando is featured in a concert of authentic Afro-Cuban music on the next Jazz Northwest, Sunday, November 21 at 1 PM PT on 88.5, KPLU and The band was formed in 1990 by pianist Fred Hoadley (pictured above center playing tres guitar). He has visited Cuba four times to study with Cuban masters.
