What kind of Gull?

Wed, 22 Feb 2012 05:23:09 GMT

I saw this yesterday at the Bear River Utah Migratory Bird Refuge.  I really have very little experience identifying gulls, but this one seems to be a Herring Gull.  Can anyone confirm?

Have seen this guy a few times and can't actually figure it out. Could someone give me some help please. This in the marsh land East of Houston along the Trinity River.

Canada Goose Question

Tue, 21 Feb 2012 19:46:09 GMT

I saw three Canada Geese recently, and the third one seemed to have a short neck. Is it a different subspecies, or just individual variation?

yellow beak, yellow legs, yellow eye ring, blue-black capped, ground bird

Juv Red-tailed?

Tue, 21 Feb 2012 23:04:30 GMT

I took this picture at the rim of the Grand Canyon in northern AZ in January 2011.  Never did ID it and forgot about it until today.  It was soaring a long ways down.  Camera was at 30X zoom.

White headed grackle?

Wed, 22 Feb 2012 05:08:32 GMT

I saw this today at a feeder in northeastern Oklahoma.  It was hanging around with redwinged blackbirds and is a little bigger than them.

Does anyone know what it is?  Perhaps a white headed grackle?

Confirm for lifer..Peregrine Falcon

Wed, 22 Feb 2012 05:06:13 GMT

Today in the NWR near Colusa, Calif. Bad lighting....I had to lighten it up a lot. It wasn't much more than a silhouette because of the backlighting.

Are these two different gulls?

Wed, 22 Feb 2012 05:33:45 GMT

I saw these at the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge yesterday and to me they look like two different kinds of gulls.  One has brown streaking accross its neck and I'm pretty sure it's a California Gull.  However, the one behind it is void of streaking and it's eye looks different to me.  Is it different than the California Gull?

Sparrow

Wed, 22 Feb 2012 06:41:09 GMT

I took this in Feb of last year.  Song sparrow?

Gull and unknown sparrow possibly

Wed, 22 Feb 2012 05:47:38 GMT

We had a dark rainy day so I couldn't get a very good photo of this Gull. I wondered if it was enough to get an ID?

Thanks
Karen

Wed, 22 Feb 2012 08:40:48 GMT

Sorry for the bad photos... these are the best of the bunch (they were quite far)... There are several pics, so I'll post each of them hoping for a better chance at a good ID :-)

Need help. Thrasher??

Tue, 21 Feb 2012 05:05:09 GMT

Taken last weekend at the Morongo Basin Wildlife Preser(image) ve, above Palm Springs, CA. I think I've narrowed it down to t thrasher but which?  As always thanks for your help.

a swallow, a thrush, and a ...dunno

Wed, 22 Feb 2012 07:07:25 GMT

This is again from the Napa Valley.  First, can you tell what swallow this is?  Violet-green?  Tree?

(image)

Second... what the heck is this yellow-headed guy?

(image)

Finally, is this a hermit thrush?  One part that doesn't fit the book is how there's no darker area around the thighs.  But that doesn't make any of the other thrushes a better fit, so it's probably a hermit, right?

napa valley not-black phoebe

Tue, 21 Feb 2012 15:28:12 GMT

Okay, next question.  This looks very much like a black phoebe except it's far from black.  Is this a phoebe, or some other flycatcher?

Confirming Red-Tailed Hawk

Wed, 22 Feb 2012 04:56:14 GMT

Is this a Red-Tailed Hawk?  I saw it at Willard Bay in Northern Utah around 3:00 p.m.  It flew out of a tree right above me.  I didn't get to see it's top side.  I think it is a RTH, but want to be sure because I am pretty new to birding.

Any ideas?

Wed, 22 Feb 2012 01:20:17 GMT

I know this isn't a very good picture, but maybe someone might have an idea of what this could be.  It has a distinct white band above it's tail on both the underside and the topside.  It is a very large bird, like an eagle or an owl.  I saw it near Willard Bay in Northern Utah at dusk.

Female Brewer's Blackbird

Wed, 22 Feb 2012 03:22:09 GMT

Taken yesterday on the California coast.  Saw some male Brewer's, but not sure if this is the female.

Any ideas on this small sparrow like yellow faced bird?

Tue, 21 Feb 2012 22:11:12 GMT

I saw this yesterday in Northern Utah, I thought it would be easy to identify from the picture when I got home, but I was wrong.  Any ideas?

Similar Birds

Sorry-- I have trouble telling these birds apart:

#1.  Carolina or Black-capped Chickadee?   (northern Delaware)
