Pair program with me. (Remote)

Tue, 18 Oct 2016 21:12:06 -0800

I'd like to find someone to virtually pair program Ruby projects with on a regular basis. Vim, Screen, Tox (or similar setup).

I feel somewhat odd in that I'm basically searching for a tutor/friend. I want this to help fill the gaps that IRC, search engines, and my textbook cannot.

I know enough to complete a small (~250-line), work-in-progress application. I would like it and future projects to fit with best practices. We could start something new and build it from the ground level.

I'm still a beginner and would prefer to work with anyone at or above my skill level. I can share my current work as a measure of that level.

All I can offer in return is companionship and bad jokes. Maybe we can build something cool together. Please Memail if interested.

Edit a music video (Earth)

Fri, 07 Oct 2016 07:53:31 -0800

We filmed a music video. Editing it together has turned out to be beyond my abilities.

There's one master take of the song beginning to end, 2:47. Then 7 or 8 other clips a few minutes long with lots of good shots. There is absolutely a complete video to be cut together here.

The soundtrack to the clips (the band miming playing to the song, of course) is such that you can do a multi-camera clip synced together in Premiere. That plus drop in nicely timed compelling moments from the other angles and takes (divorced from being at the actual right moment of the song) and I think there's a pretty good video.

But, my elderly machine chokes on it. And I'm just not adept enough with the program to know how to work around it.

I'm figuring this would be an amusing afternoon or two for someone, and will result in a goofy video. There's some great stuff in the clips, it's a burner of a song, and there's a 'hook' to the video we shot that will make this at least moderately compelling.

The $100 is not intended to actually 'buy' your services. It is a token amount offered (in earnest!) by a broke rock and roll band that plays for beer and needs help.

DevOps Security Engineer (Austin, TX)

Tue, 04 Oct 2016 11:45:48 -0800

Come work with me!

About the position:

We currently are in a hybrid cloud solution that will expand more and more to a primary cloud hosted service (AWS, Azure, etc).

You'll also get to work with me and that would be pretty cool too I think?

WordPress person to help whip a simple Divi template into shape (Denver CO)

Tue, 20 Sep 2016 11:13:45 -0800

I'm launching a new blog and need someone to help me adjust the template to be more in line with the aesthetic I'm looking for, and also to put some Amazon ads in the right rail, etc. Someone who knows what they are doing should *probably* be able to do this in an afternoon, I think.

I'd really love it if someone were in the area and we could sit down over coffee, but remote could work, too.

Art Commission for Fiasco RPG Playset (Providence, RI)

Fri, 29 Jul 2016 12:23:14 -0800

I've written a Fiasco Playset that I'd like to self publish (via a creative commons license). I'm satisfied with my writing and layout skills, but I'd really like to commission a striking cover that's in tune with the style of other playsets that are out there.

I'd be quite happy with a Saul Bass poster* style cover if it conveys the gist of my playset, but I'd also be happy to entertain other styles. The topic of the playset is very specific (contract archaeology), and I'd like that to be easily recognized by anyone who's worked in the field. Mostly, that involves featuring things like hi-vis vests, hard hats and trowels.

I'd like sign off on a final version by the end of August.

(*This style is strongly associated with the game)

Kids' Charity Co-director (Madison, WI)

Sun, 24 Jul 2016 10:56:08 -0800

I help run a winter gift drive for homeless kids in Madison, WI and need more dedicated high-level organizational help this year. I'd love to start working with someone(s) soon so we can get to know one another and integrate you into the existing team as we get this year's program off the ground. The exact time commitment is up to you, but we ask that you do treat it as a real commitment and give us as much notice as possible if something needs to change!

Santas Without Chimneys is really cool program (I think) that carefully selects presents for specific kids instead of, say, just giving sportballs to all nine-year-old boys, but that means it's a ton of work. If the growth projection is to be believed, we'll have about 500 kids enrolled this year. Meanwhile, not only is my own baby turning into a toddler, two of our best people have moved out of state. We have plenty of general volunteers, but really really need at least one more core team person, and I'd feel better adding two or three. I'm hoping to find someone(s) excited to jump in and help make things run better than ever, be that on the database backend, coordinating other volunteers, sourcing donations, or wherever else you would like to focus.

IDEALLY, you and I would get along swimmingly and make a great duo. Realistically, I'm an introvert with odd hobbies and obscure interests, so you might have to make friends among the rest of the team, but they're good people.

Specific sorts of traits/skills/experiences that might lend themselves well to this program: homelessness outreach, database management, an utmost respect for client confidentiality, volunteer organization, retail stocking, web design/HTML, general computer literacy, budgeting, dedication to causes, nonprofit board membership, community outreach, feminism, marketing, delivery driving, creativity, childcare/being a parent or otherwise involved enough with kids to know about toys, media relations, librarian, Spanish or Hmong conversational skills (reading/writing not necessary), teaching experience, a love of decorating, flexibility, patience, motivation, independence.

Please don't let non-Christianity keep you from participating! We use the trappings of Christmas and Santa because it's a great rallying point and a way to reach most of the kids where they are, but we're always willing to accommodate families of any (or no) faith. Our volunteers are likewise rather diverse in this regard; I personally am an atheist. Politically, we tend to be a very left-leaning crowd, particularly when it comes to the causes of and solutions to homelessness, but we certainly won't shun you unless you just can't get behind our mission. That said, if you couldn't deal with giving a boy a (requested) dress or a girl a set of weights (again, by request), it's not going to work out between us. The only hard lines we hold are "no weapons or realistic facsimiles" and "no cash"; all other gift requests will at least be considered, and generally the only reason anything else would be denied is expense.

This is not a paid position; none of them are, mine included. I will happily say incredibly nice things about you to others who might want to pay you! This will be our fifth year doing the program, so I like to think we have some decent cred built up at this point.

Watson speech-to-text enabler (Waterloo Region (Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge), Wellington (Guelph), Brant County (Brantford) or nearby area)

Fri, 22 Jul 2016 08:29:23 -0800

As is evidenced in this thread, I tried to get IBM Watson's speech-to-text application up and running. As is also in evidence, I failed to do so successfully.

I'd like somebody to get this working for me. I figure it shouldn't take that long--an hour or two at most--especially if you actually understand what you're doing.

help me figure out a bass tab (New York but you don't have to be local for this)

Thu, 07 Jul 2016 13:03:06 -0800

I'm trying to figure out the bass tab for a specific arrangement of U2's Walk On* - the one from the 7 album. Audio here.

The bass tabs for this song that I can find on the internet are 1) from the arrangement on the All That You Can't Leave Behind album 2) mostly incorrect.

What I really need is to be able to listen to the song and figure out the bass tab just by ear, but I'm relatively new to bass playing and also unfortunately my hearing is not so great in my right ear so this task is proving to be quite difficult for me. If someone more skilled than I am can help me with this I'd be most grateful.

I typically pay my music teacher $70 per 1hr lesson and am happy to pay at that same rate (though I'd prefer to get a time estimate for completion up front).

Thank you for helping with this random request.

*for Reasons.

Full-time cloud systems development engineer sought (The Hague, NL)

Fri, 01 Jul 2016 12:10:53 -0800

Hi! One of my colleagues is moving away, which means I'm on the lookout for a new coworker. Please consider being my next coworker...especially if you write good wiki docs.

This job is as a System Development Engineer at Amazon Web Services in The Hague, Netherlands, where we write and run Amazon WorkMail. As sysdevs, we're responsible for designing and running operational tools, security, and generally doing things to preserve the sanity of a small herd of owner-operator developers, like making sure they don't have to worry about their servers. You're devops? You're a sysadmin? You're a jack-of-all-trades systems wrangler? You're an SRE?'re like... you're like me!

We <3 our paying customers and our developers (who are also our customers), and want to build things to make their lives awesome...then we go do it, because wanting isn't all that much fun on its own. We automate all that can be automated, we give our inventions silly names, we keep the lights on. Come, let us sing the song of our people together. (It goes a little like "git, I'm going to detach YOUR head." Or at least that's what it sounded like to me yesterday.)

The public posting is at Relo and visa sponsorship are possible, 25 days vacation, English speaking company but all the hagelslag you can eat at lunchtime, etc etc. Plus, since this is NL, you get up to half off a fancypants new bicycle every 3 years, which you can park in our swanky bike room, because bikes. Please feel free to MeMail me if you have questions!

(I'm sorry I can't fill out the salary field specifically -- I'm not the hiring manager, and I don't know what range they got approvals for. I'm just a MeFite lookin' for other MeFite system wranglers...if only so we can have more IRLs 'round these parts.)

Surf for Great Food Web Sites (Earth)

Fri, 17 Jun 2016 10:01:43 -0800

I'm helping out with a ground-breaking, high-visibility project run by a well-regarded food writer. We need a small mountain of highly specialized research-via-surfing, along with some light writing. Not's for popular use. And, yes, it pays real money (negotiable). Here's the gist: 1. Surf around and find particularly fun and great English language web sites/pages about world cuisines ("Chilean", "Laotian", etc) or specific topics within cuisines ("Thai Curries", "Japanese Nostalgia Food", "Brazilian Rodizio Dos and Don'ts", "Photo Encyclopedias of German Wursts"). Cooking video sites, recipe sites, cuisine overview or encyclopedia sites, everything is fair game....but you must ferret passionately for absolute treasure, rather than easy Google search results (i.e. "good enough" isn't good enough). The urge to ferret and filter should be a natural, happy-making drive for you that won't flag over time. To repeat: you need to feel an exuberant rush from having found OMG greatness every single time....and repeat many times! This is hard, unless you're good at this sort of thing! 2. Describe the sites tersely but persuasively, in the voice with which you might text message a friend. I.e. passionately sum up why it's great and worth surfing in a natural, non-writerly voice that doesn't sound like some cubicle worker who's churning these out by the bucketload. We don't want slick professional writers or writer wannabes. We need earnestness. REQUIREMENTS: Strong experience and enthusiasm for ethnic food. You'll learn tons from this work, but we need you to be reasonably informed to begin with (from dining out and/or cooking and/or traveling), so you're able to gauge sites for their savvy and authenticity and winnow pandering sites (e.g. ones that call kimchi "spicy pickled cabbage"), or swap in trashy supermarket ingredients, or that feature well-intentioned home cooks who just aren't really very good, etc.. No lazy procrastinators. You'll need to work for several months, in your spare time, self-paced and unstructured...yet produce with unflagging determination. All while retaining enough innocent treasure-hunting joy that you never drop your standards, and always write your descriptions with genuine passion. This will require Trix Rabbit level exuberance. This undertaking is ambitious. It will need to excite you, beyond just the pay, if you're going to do a good job.. You must be moldable . Flexible enough to accept loads of feedback until you're fully calibrated with the sort of thing we're looking for. Maybe even enjoy being calibrated in this way. If this "sounds like fun", it will be. But it will also be serious work, so if you have trouble reconciling "fun" and "discipline", this project will wear you down. If you can produce over long haul, it will be something you'll be very proud to have been part of (and a fine resume credit). You'll also learn a massive amount about world cuisine. But, again, it requires disciplined and sustained work without a lot of structure. Understand: this is a monster commitment, albeit under low pressure, and done at your own pace, so it can function really well as a nights/weekend/idle moments fill-in project (perfect for young mothers waiting for babies to crash, etc). Send a note telling us why this is the most amazing coincidence because you're so strangely and amazingly perfect for this.[...]

Looking for a copy of Misi, last spotted in an Ecuadorian book store (United States)

Wed, 13 Apr 2016 04:24:21 -0800

Saw this in a bookstore in Ecuador, should have snapped it up. More details on the game here.

If anyone is going to be in an area where this might be available, I'd like a copy or two that can be shipped to me when you get back to the United States. If I recall correctly, it looked like a square box about the size of Ticket To Ride ...
