Facilitate the next Einstein - consult, find scholarship, etc. (USA - Europe)

Fri, 15 Dec 2017 17:55:29 -0800

My nephew is a genius level savant, currently 15 years old and completing high school in Tajikistan. I am not exaggerating, he is going to be someone world famous for some huge important science breakthrough in 20 years.

He attends the only remaining Soviet-quality elite STEM high school in Dushanbe. In addition he is an autodidact in a constant haze of learning, thinking, reading and writing. He is teaching his peers in math and physics because he is more knowledgeable than the teachers. He has been to the International Science Olympiad multiple times in the last few years. When he started competing at age 12 he won bronze (not age restricted, this was against the oldest kids), and since then he always got silver or gold.

Just incidentally, on the side, he has become a fluent English speaker, writes plays and poetry, etc., etc.

By rights this kid should be able to get a choice of full scholarship to the best STEM universities in the world.

Here's the problem. His immediate family is from Soviet era. They have nurtured his education but they are monolingual Russian and ignorant of the West, they have no idea of how to make their son's university education happen. I have no idea how to make this happen.

So this is a potentially big job, but also very very personally rewarding for the right person.

He needs a mentor and facilitator familiar with the application and scholarship processes for these world-class STEM centres who can know what needs to be done and then help walk him and his family through it.

Someone in Italy to buy 10 boxes of Biochetasi and mail them to me (Florida)

Mon, 20 Nov 2017 07:55:13 -0800

Looking for someone to buy Biochetasi and ship them to me. It is the only thing that helps my unrelenting morning sickness and now that I'm back in the US, I can't get it.

In Pursuit of Porphyrellus (Pacific Northwest)

Thu, 02 Nov 2017 13:01:04 -0800

My friend is doing her thesis on porphyrellus mushrooms in CA/OR/WA, and she needs enough of these from different sites to be able to reach conclusions. She's got all the mushroom hunting clubs clued in to look for 'em already, but I thought I might catch a few stray mushroom hunters on Metafilter.

It's an uncommon brown-topped bolete with a brown ... whatever you call the stem, and brown pores. It's not glamorous for any reason. When we went out hunting, I thought we seemed to be finding it near the boletes with the brown tops, yellow pores, and red ... whatever you call the stem. Grows near spruce, is mycorrhizal. Seemed like maybe it grew near those ferny-looking mosses?

I can put you in touch with her if you want to hunt for these out of the goodness of your heart, or if you've found some and want to send 'em to her.

Recycle an ancient and enormous TV (Portland, OR)

Wed, 25 Oct 2017 14:26:21 -0800

The previous owners of my house left behind a pretty big TV in the basement. Bring a friend, and probably a truck, to help you heave it up the (interior) basement stairs and haul it away to a legit e-waste recycler.

There are a few exterior steps as well, but the basement part will be the toughest with limited clearance. Weekend or evening preferred, but not absolutely necessary.

The TV is a standard def Hitachi 53uwx10b if you want to preview the dimensions.

Feedback on my application for library assistant in an academic library (UK)

Fri, 20 Oct 2017 18:36:55 -0800

Applied recently for a (very) part-time unqualified post in an academic library. Didn't get an interview but want to apply again when a similar post comes up. I'm looking for someone with experience in an academic library in the UK to read my application and give me some feedback by email on how I could make myself (sound or be) a stronger candidate. Hoping this would only take someone an hour, hence one-off payment of £30.

Coach me through The Odin Project (Your house)

Wed, 18 Oct 2017 09:45:41 -0800

After 17 years on Mefi, I want to learn how to code. I like the hacker boot camp model but don't really need a job (am semi retired). I need a coach / tutor who can guide me through learning full stack basics, in a really super practical way. I found The Odin Project which seems to have a decent curriculum substrate for moving from theory to production, so landed there.

Would really value a coach to not only give me real world advice and trouble shooting but also to keep me a bit motivated and on point over the next year. I'm open to all types of arrangements. Of course thinking remote as I live in the boonies but also it is 2017. Humor and patience a requirement.

Drope me a line if interested. Thanks!!

Expert Adobe Illustrator tutor needed (online) (Online)

Sun, 08 Oct 2017 16:51:50 -0800

Are you an absolute wizard in Adobe Illustrator CC?
Do you know all the keyboard shortcuts?
Do you know five different ways to do anything, and when you'd use each one?
Do you speak Photoshop also, so you can put things in terms I understand?

I'm looking for an expert to tutor me (a novice) in Illustrator via teamviewer. Ideally I'd like to meet once a week for an hour, at some time that worked for us both. Please send me a link to your portfolio site, so I can be inspired by what an Illustrator master like yourself can do.

Need an illustrator to express my ideas for a children's book (New York City)

This is my first venture in children's books. But my idea is amazing. I need a few illustrations to go with my manuscript.

If some one can get back at me to talk that would be amazing!!!!I already have contacts in publishing just need to deliver an amazing product. The idea here is to get a book deal and have you as the illustrator of the book series. once we get picked up.

Photo Editing 138 files - background removal, color correction (Boston)

Wed, 12 Jul 2017 10:39:16 -0800

I have 138 jpg images of quilts that need to have their backgrounds removed. Two or three have complicated edges but most are defined.

After the background is removed, those same files, + 22 more files, need to be color corrected. Most images, but not all, have a gray card to help with white balance and color correction. The 22 additional files need to be color corrected to match their companion file (i.e., they are detail photos and need to match their corresponding image).

Final output needs to be a high resolution jpg file for offset printing.

I'm willing to piece out the work if you consider yourself experienced at one but not both parts of the job.

Please provide a cost and time estimate for either....
- background removal for 138 files
- OR color correction for 160 files
- OR background removal (138 files) AND the color correction (same 138 + 22 for a total of 160 files).

Happy to provide sample files for the most complicated edges and color correction, and more info on request.

looking for an emergency volunteer pet sitter or 2 (Houston, Tx)

Sat, 01 Jul 2017 22:14:59 -0800

I suddenly have to move to temporary housing and I'm unable to take my dog or my cat to where I'll be staying. I am requesting someone to temporarily home my pets for 2 months. I can supply food and toys for both and a kitty box and litter. They don't need to stay together and can go to 2 different households.

We're in NW Houston but I'd be grateful for any help in the Houston area.

There are complications.

My Biscuit dog is great with our family and is a great friend but hasn't been around other dogs and will nip at people he doesn't know if they try to pet him. He's fixed and had shots until he was 2 but he's not current. He's 5 and prefers to be outside and loves frisbees. He's 35 lbs, about knee-high but has a big, long body.

My Bunny cat is indoor only, about 8 months old, not neutered yet, hasn't had shots yet. He loves to play fetch and he's a frisky guy.

They're both great friends and super sweet and a lot of fun.

Pick up keys to AirBnB and deliver them at midnight on July 1 (London, UK)

Thu, 15 Jun 2017 04:56:48 -0800

This is a hypothetical question to see if this is a reasonable request: I'm flying with my 2 adult daughters to London and arriving at 23:00 on July 1. I'm renting an AirBnB in the neighborhood of the London Eye and Big Ben. I'm interested to see if someone could pick up the keys sometime after 3pm and then meet me at the flat when I get to town sometime around midnight or 1am. If you had ability to pick us up at the airport and drive us to the apartment, that would be great, but not necessary - I can arrange that separately.

This is still tentative. We might change our flights. I just wanted to see if there was someone willing to do this, and how much you would charge.

Radiology Clinic Clerical (4260 Plymouth Road, Ann Arbor, MI)

Thu, 11 May 2017 09:18:44 -0800

We have an opening for office clerical, 30-32 hours a week, permanent. Clerical as in mostly checking people in for appointments, scheduling appointments, calls to confirm or change appointments. Attention to detail and ability to be pleasant and present is the primary requirement.

Pluses: great place to work, excellent benefits, including full health & 2 to 1 employer matched 401-K even at part time (30+ hours/week is considered FULL time). Secure, stable position.

Minuses: Hours are usually 2pm to 10pm or 3pm to 11pm. Not much advancement upward within the department, but employer is HUGE so there are plenty of opportunities across the corporation. Good pay for the work, but not great pay.

Energy Efficiency Wonk (Minneapolis)

Tue, 02 May 2017 08:21:45 -0800

This is a really cool job for the kind of person who thinks nerdy energy efficiency stuff is super cool. The real job title is "Regulatory Analyst, Conservation Improvement Program," but the simple version is that I need an energy policy person to join my staff of talented and smart wonks working on utility energy efficiency programs, because my senior analyst has decided to go to law school.

We're a large natural gas utility. We have a large conservation program (one of the best in the US). We're looking to hire an analyst to support the regulatory oversight and reporting functions related to the conservation program.

It's a great way to get started in the energy efficiency field, and offers opportunities to grow into some pretty interesting policy work. You'd get exposed to most aspects of EE programs, including program design, policy, cost-recovery and the general utility business model for EE, and a lot of other fun stuff.

My ideal candidate would be someone with some experience and exposure to energy conservation and energy efficiency, an understanding of the energy policy landscape and the regulatory process, and decent quantitative skills including cost/benefit analysis. We're not looking for an engineer, but someone with an understanding of technical principles would be good. There is an extent to which brains and motivation can substitute for experience. Critical thinking and strong written and verbal communication skills are key, along with attention to detail - this position needs someone who can move from the nitty-gritty detail level to the 10,000-foot overview and back again.

The formal job description and online application info can be found at - search the postings for "Regulatory Analyst, Conservation Improvement Program." I'm happy to answer questions about the position (MeMail is good), but all applications must go through the website. The online application tool is a pain in terms of formatting but you can attach your resume/references/letter/etc as PDFs.
