Organize my iTunes (New York, NY)

Mon, 05 Dec 2016 22:13:45 -0800

I'm looking for someone meticulous to organize my iTunes library. There are about 2,000 tracks. They are reasonably well organized but could use some sprucing up. Please let me know what you think would be a reasonable fee.

Need a Boston-area boarder for my two pet rats (December 23-27) (Third St, Cambridge, MA)

Sun, 04 Dec 2016 09:25:39 -0800

My two adult girls need a place to stay (in their fully-furnished cage, with food/treats/&c. provided) between December 23rd and December 27th.

I'm offering $20/day, but could be flexible.

For anyone without much rat experience: they need just a short daily feeding; they entertain themselves for most of the day. Usually they get 1-2 hours of daily cage-free, socialize-with-the-human time, but some occasional cuddles will probably be enough to tide them over for the few days. They are very resilient and friendly, and they love humans! Aside from scratching around in their bedding, they don't really make sounds.

Here's a picture of them hanging out with me and my hoodie.

I live in Cambridge, but am willing to drive them out to within a 1-hour radius of Boston. Closer is, of course, easier.

I know it's late notice for the holidays, but hopefully they can add some joy to your home too. :)

Regulatory Analyst - Conservation / Energy Efficiency (Minneapolis, MN)

Mon, 28 Nov 2016 14:39:22 -0800

I need an energy policy wonk to join my staff of talented and smart wonks working on utility energy efficiency programs.

The official job summary from the job posting is:
"Provides regulatory monitoring and oversight of energy conservation programs ensuring that all corporate and regulatory requirements are met. Provides support for the preparation of regulatory filings related to energy conservation."

Less officially, we're a large natural gas utility. We have a large conservation program (one of the best in the US). We're looking to hire an analyst to support the regulatory oversight and reporting functions related to the conservation program.

It's a great way to get started in the energy efficiency field, and offers opportunities to grow into some pretty interesting policy work. My ideal candidate would be someone with some experience and exposure to energy conservation and energy efficiency, an understanding of the energy policy landscape and the regulatory process, and decent quantitative skills including cost/benefit analysis. We're not looking for an engineer, but someone with an understanding of technical principles would be good. There is an extent to which brains and motivation can substitute for experience. Critical thinking and strong written and verbal communication skills are key, along with attention to detail - this position needs someone who can move from the nitty-gritty detail level to the 10,000-foot overview and back again.

The formal job description and online application info can be found at www.centerpointenergy.com/careers - search the postings for "Regulatory Analyst, Conservation Improvement Program." I'm happy to answer questions about the position (MeMail is good), but all applications must go through the website. The online application tool is a pain in terms of formatting but you can attach your resume/references/letter/etc as PDFs.

Web video troubleshooter (remote/anywhere)

Wed, 23 Nov 2016 11:02:29 -0800

I have a project with some background video playing on the home page, with other content overlaid on top. The video is using straight HTML5 video tags and is generally working well on the latest versions of major desktop browsers (Firefox, Safari, Chrome), where it loads, autoplays, and loops as desired. However, there are a handful of issues:

* it doesn't play at all on Surface (using Chrome)
* it doesn't play on iPads
* some of the video files we've tried do not loop in the latest Firefox - they DID loop correctly in FF 48, but not 50

So I'm looking for a contractor who really knows the ins and outs of autoplaying background video on web pages, on a variety of browsers and platforms (and especially Surface and iPad).

Please let me know your rate and a guesstimate of how long it might take you to troubleshoot the issues listed above.

Thank you!

Agent for the Homeless in Chicago (60612)

Wed, 09 Nov 2016 08:41:12 -0800

Hi there, I am trying to help out a homeless person and get them set up to be self sufficient. I have some extra money, and ideas, but not enough knowledge and not enough ability to do it myself.

My idea is to get him a reliable car so he can work, doing Lyft or food delivery or whatever he feels like doing. Along with this would be housing, food, cleanliness, and all that other stuff that goes along with living in civilization.

I have talked to a couple dedicated services that do these things but they have limited availability. I want to pay you to help him out, be his agent, which includes knowledge about how to navigate the various paperwork feifdoms out there to reacquire things like his drivers license and things like that. You don't need to know everything about every little agency, but I would think a general knowledge of the system and ability on how to find out what specific requirements things need will be best. If you were able to drive him to different places to get what he needs that would be great, otherwise I can do this.

I will pay you whatever you feel is fair for your labor and expenses. All fees or charges that are needed will be paid for by me. Maybe we can work out some kind of retainer, where I pay you a lump sum and you pay said fees from there. We can work it out.

Things that need to be done, roughly in order of most pressing on down:
- Drivers license. He knows how to drive, claims a decades old DUI but otherwise no other impediments to getting relicensed.
- Housing. He has intermittent housing with family now, but not reliably. He currently lives in Garfield park, Madison and Pulaski, but is not necessarily tied there. Perhaps more expensive but regular temporary housing at first, then a less expensive apartment later.
- Knowledge. He is not very good with technology, and would need to learn to use his phone more proficiently to use different driving labor services. I was thinking a basic community college course or other private computer proficiency course.

Once we get these balls rolling, and he is able to start earning income. I would like to keep you on to figure out anything else we need, on the same terms, but this would not be required.

Thank you for your help, and any ideas or suggestions are welcome.

Pair program with me. (Remote)

Tue, 18 Oct 2016 21:12:06 -0800

I'd like to find someone to virtually pair program Ruby projects with on a regular basis. Vim, Screen, Tox (or similar setup).

I feel somewhat odd in that I'm basically searching for a tutor/friend. I want this to help fill the gaps that IRC, search engines, and my textbook cannot.

I know enough to complete a small (~250-line), work-in-progress application. I would like it and future projects to fit with best practices. We could start something new and build it from the ground level.

I'm still a beginner and would prefer to work with anyone at or above my skill level. I can share my current work as a measure of that level.

All I can offer in return is companionship and bad jokes. Maybe we can build something cool together. Please Memail if interested.

WordPress person to help whip a simple Divi template into shape (Denver CO)

Tue, 20 Sep 2016 11:13:45 -0800

I'm launching a new blog and need someone to help me adjust the template to be more in line with the aesthetic I'm looking for, and also to put some Amazon ads in the right rail, etc. Someone who knows what they are doing should *probably* be able to do this in an afternoon, I think.

I'd really love it if someone were in the area and we could sit down over coffee, but remote could work, too.

Thanks!

Art Commission for Fiasco RPG Playset (Providence, RI)

Fri, 29 Jul 2016 12:23:14 -0800

I've written a Fiasco Playset that I'd like to self publish (via a creative commons license). I'm satisfied with my writing and layout skills, but I'd really like to commission a striking cover that's in tune with the style of other playsets that are out there.

I'd be quite happy with a Saul Bass poster* style cover if it conveys the gist of my playset, but I'd also be happy to entertain other styles. The topic of the playset is very specific (contract archaeology), and I'd like that to be easily recognized by anyone who's worked in the field. Mostly, that involves featuring things like hi-vis vests, hard hats and trowels.

I'd like sign off on a final version by the end of August.

(*This style is strongly associated with the game)

Watson speech-to-text enabler (Waterloo Region (Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge), Wellington (Guelph), Brant County (Brantford) or nearby area)

Fri, 22 Jul 2016 08:29:23 -0800

As is evidenced in this thread, I tried to get IBM Watson's speech-to-text application up and running. As is also in evidence, I failed to do so successfully.

I'd like somebody to get this working for me. I figure it shouldn't take that long--an hour or two at most--especially if you actually understand what you're doing.

help me figure out a bass tab (New York but you don't have to be local for this)

Thu, 07 Jul 2016 13:03:06 -0800

I'm trying to figure out the bass tab for a specific arrangement of U2's Walk On* - the one from the 7 album. Audio here.

The bass tabs for this song that I can find on the internet are 1) from the arrangement on the All That You Can't Leave Behind album 2) mostly incorrect.

What I really need is to be able to listen to the song and figure out the bass tab just by ear, but I'm relatively new to bass playing and also unfortunately my hearing is not so great in my right ear so this task is proving to be quite difficult for me. If someone more skilled than I am can help me with this I'd be most grateful.

I typically pay my music teacher $70 per 1hr lesson and am happy to pay at that same rate (though I'd prefer to get a time estimate for completion up front).

Thank you for helping with this random request.

*for Reasons.

Full-time cloud systems development engineer sought (The Hague, NL)

Fri, 01 Jul 2016 12:10:53 -0800

Hi! One of my colleagues is moving away, which means I'm on the lookout for a new coworker. Please consider being my next coworker...especially if you write good wiki docs.

This job is as a System Development Engineer at Amazon Web Services in The Hague, Netherlands, where we write and run Amazon WorkMail. As sysdevs, we're responsible for designing and running operational tools, security, and generally doing things to preserve the sanity of a small herd of owner-operator developers, like making sure they don't have to worry about their servers. You're devops? You're a sysadmin? You're a jack-of-all-trades systems wrangler? You're an SRE? You...you're like... you're like me!

We <3 our paying customers and our developers (who are also our customers), and want to build things to make their lives awesome...then we go do it, because wanting isn't all that much fun on its own. We automate all that can be automated, we give our inventions silly names, we keep the lights on. Come, let us sing the song of our people together. (It goes a little like "git, I'm going to detach YOUR head." Or at least that's what it sounded like to me yesterday.)

The public posting is at https://www.amazon.jobs/en/jobs/421343. Relo and visa sponsorship are possible, 25 days vacation, English speaking company but all the hagelslag you can eat at lunchtime, etc etc. Plus, since this is NL, you get up to half off a fancypants new bicycle every 3 years, which you can park in our swanky bike room, because bikes. Please feel free to MeMail me if you have questions!

(I'm sorry I can't fill out the salary field specifically -- I'm not the hiring manager, and I don't know what range they got approvals for. I'm just a MeFite lookin' for other MeFite system wranglers...if only so we can have more IRLs 'round these parts.)

Surf for Great Food Web Sites (Earth)

Fri, 17 Jun 2016 10:01:43 -0800

I'm helping out with a ground-breaking, high-visibility project run by a well-regarded food writer. We need a small mountain of highly specialized research-via-surfing, along with some light writing. Not academic...it's for popular use. And, yes, it pays real money (negotiable). Here's the gist: 1. Surf around and find particularly fun and great English language web sites/pages about world cuisines ("Chilean", "Laotian", etc) or specific topics within cuisines ("Thai Curries", "Japanese Nostalgia Food", "Brazilian Rodizio Dos and Don'ts", "Photo Encyclopedias of German Wursts"). Cooking video sites, recipe sites, cuisine overview or encyclopedia sites, everything is fair game....but you must ferret passionately for absolute treasure, rather than easy Google search results (i.e. "good enough" isn't good enough). The urge to ferret and filter should be a natural, happy-making drive for you that won't flag over time. To repeat: you need to feel an exuberant rush from having found OMG greatness every single time....and repeat many times! This is hard, unless you're good at this sort of thing! 2. Describe the sites tersely but persuasively, in the voice with which you might text message a friend. I.e. passionately sum up why it's great and worth surfing in a natural, non-writerly voice that doesn't sound like some cubicle worker who's churning these out by the bucketload. We don't want slick professional writers or writer wannabes. We need earnestness. REQUIREMENTS: Strong experience and enthusiasm for ethnic food. You'll learn tons from this work, but we need you to be reasonably informed to begin with (from dining out and/or cooking and/or traveling), so you're able to gauge sites for their savvy and authenticity and winnow pandering sites (e.g. ones that call kimchi "spicy pickled cabbage"), or swap in trashy supermarket ingredients, or that feature well-intentioned home cooks who just aren't really very good, etc.. No lazy procrastinators. You'll need to work for several months, in your spare time, self-paced and unstructured...yet produce with unflagging determination. All while retaining enough innocent treasure-hunting joy that you never drop your standards, and always write your descriptions with genuine passion. This will require Trix Rabbit level exuberance. This undertaking is ambitious. It will need to excite you, beyond just the pay, if you're going to do a good job.. You must be moldable . Flexible enough to accept loads of feedback until you're fully calibrated with the sort of thing we're looking for. Maybe even enjoy being calibrated in this way. If this "sounds like fun", it will be. But it will also be serious work, so if you have trouble reconciling "fun" and "discipline", this project will wear you down. If you can produce over long haul, it will be something you'll be very proud to have been part of (and a fine resume credit). You'll also learn a massive amount about world cuisine. But, again, it requires disciplined and sustained work without a lot of structure. Understand: this is a monster commitment, albeit under low pressure, and done at your own pace, so it can function really well as a nights/weekend/idle moments fill-in project (perfect for young mothers waiting for babies to crash, etc). Send a note telling us why this is the most amazing coincidence because you're so strangely and amazingly perfect for this.[...]
