Outreachy helps people from groups underrepresented in free and open source software get involved. We provide a supportive community for beginning to contribute any time throughout the year and offer focused internship opportunities twice a year with a number of free software organizations.

The next round of Outreachy internships will be May 30, 2017 to August 30, 2017. Applications for the program are now open and the deadline for applying is March 30, 2017.

Currently, internships are open internationally to women (cis and trans), trans men, and genderqueer people. It's by no means a sprawling database, so I think it should be a pretty easy fix for someone who truly knows what they're doing.

Our nation is aging rapidly, but rather than enjoying their golden years, too many seniors find themselves struggling, forced each month to choose between food, medication, or rent. And there has been an alarming rise in the number of seniors who are homeless or relying on food banks.

In New York City, the number of seniors is projected to increase to nearly 1.9 million by 2030, making it the fastest-growing population. Unfortunately, seniors struggle disproportionately with access to benefits, health issues, and affordable housing.

One out of every six seniors relies on emergency food

One out of five lives below the poverty line

One out of four has limited mobility

Many face these challenges alone. In 2014, 32 percent of persons age 65 and over, and nearly half of persons 85 and older in New York City lived alone. In addition, seniors who live alone have the second highest poverty rate (among all older households).

A complex ecosystem of benefits and support systems exists to help seniors; however, navigating and accessing these benefits can be a challenge and many forgo help. As many as one million seniors in New York are eligible for SNAP aka food stamps, but only about half are enrolled in the program.

We think technology has a role to play.

We’ve had fellows join us from Google, Facebook, Twitter, NASA, and more. They’ve founded organizations that have raised millions of dollars and helped hundreds of thousands of people.

Long story short...Client/small business has a site built on WordPress by another large firm. Site needs a couple of page edits/additions but the large firm wants a huge untenable maintenance contract before they'll touch it. So...

The client is in Indianapolis, so local talent would be a plus, but not necessary. MeMail or email me to talk specifics before you say yea or nay. To be fair, I'm shopping to see what's available, so I can present the idea of going freelance to the client.

UPDATE: Since posting this job offer, my client has decided to firmly sit on the fence, trying to decide what direction they want to go. My two adult girls need a place to stay (in their fully-furnished cage, with food/treats/&c. provided) between December 23rd and December 27th.

I'm offering $20/day, but could be flexible.

For anyone without much rat experience: they need just a short daily feeding; they entertain themselves for most of the day. Usually they get 1-2 hours of daily cage-free, socialize-with-the-human time, but some occasional cuddles will probably be enough to tide them over for the few days. They are very resilient and friendly, and they love humans! Aside from scratching around in their bedding, they don't really make sounds.

Here's a picture of them hanging out with me and my hoodie.

I live in Cambridge, but am willing to drive them out to within a 1-hour radius of Boston. Closer is, of course, easier.

I need an energy policy wonk to join my staff of talented and smart wonks working on utility energy efficiency programs.

The official job summary from the job posting is:
"Provides regulatory monitoring and oversight of energy conservation programs ensuring that all corporate and regulatory requirements are met. Provides support for the preparation of regulatory filings related to energy conservation."

Less officially, we're a large natural gas utility. We have a large conservation program (one of the best in the US). We're looking to hire an analyst to support the regulatory oversight and reporting functions related to the conservation program.

It's a great way to get started in the energy efficiency field, and offers opportunities to grow into some pretty interesting policy work. My ideal candidate would be someone with some experience and exposure to energy conservation and energy efficiency, an understanding of the energy policy landscape and the regulatory process, and decent quantitative skills including cost/benefit analysis. We're not looking for an engineer, but someone with an understanding of technical principles would be good. There is an extent to which brains and motivation can substitute for experience. Critical thinking and strong written and verbal communication skills are key, along with attention to detail - this position needs someone who can move from the nitty-gritty detail level to the 10,000-foot overview and back again.

Web video troubleshooter (remote/anywhere)

I have a project with some background video playing on the home page, with other content overlaid on top. The video is using straight HTML5 video tags and is generally working well on the latest versions of major desktop browsers (Firefox, Safari, Chrome), where it loads, autoplays, and loops as desired. However, there are a handful of issues:

* it doesn't play at all on Surface (using Chrome)
* it doesn't play on iPads
* some of the video files we've tried do not loop in the latest Firefox - they DID loop correctly in FF 48, but not 50

So I'm looking for a contractor who really knows the ins and outs of autoplaying background video on web pages, on a variety of browsers and platforms (and especially Surface and iPad).

Please let me know your rate and a guesstimate of how long it might take you to troubleshoot the issues listed above.

Hi there, I am trying to help out a homeless person and get them set up to be self sufficient. I have some extra money, and ideas, but not enough knowledge and not enough ability to do it myself.

My idea is to get him a reliable car so he can work, doing Lyft or food delivery or whatever he feels like doing. Along with this would be housing, food, cleanliness, and all that other stuff that goes along with living in civilization.

I have talked to a couple dedicated services that do these things but they have limited availability. I want to pay you to help him out, be his agent, which includes knowledge about how to navigate the various paperwork feifdoms out there to reacquire things like his drivers license and things like that. You don't need to know everything about every little agency, but I would think a general knowledge of the system and ability on how to find out what specific requirements things need will be best. If you were able to drive him to different places to get what he needs that would be great, otherwise I can do this.

I will pay you whatever you feel is fair for your labor and expenses. All fees or charges that are needed will be paid for by me. Maybe we can work out some kind of retainer, where I pay you a lump sum and you pay said fees from there. We can work it out.

Things that need to be done, roughly in order of most pressing on down:
- Drivers license. He knows how to drive, claims a decades old DUI but otherwise no other impediments to getting relicensed.
- Housing. He has intermittent housing with family now, but not reliably. He currently lives in Garfield park, Madison and Pulaski, but is not necessarily tied there. Perhaps more expensive but regular temporary housing at first, then a less expensive apartment later.
- Knowledge. He is not very good with technology, and would need to learn to use his phone more proficiently to use different driving labor services. I was thinking a basic community college course or other private computer proficiency course.

Once we get these balls rolling, and he is able to start earning income. I would like to keep you on to figure out anything else we need, on the same terms, but this would not be required.

I'd like to find someone to virtually pair program Ruby projects with on a regular basis. Vim, Screen, Tox (or similar setup).

I feel somewhat odd in that I'm basically searching for a tutor/friend. I want this to help fill the gaps that IRC, search engines, and my textbook cannot.

I know enough to complete a small (~250-line), work-in-progress application. I would like it and future projects to fit with best practices. We could start something new and build it from the ground level.

I'm still a beginner and would prefer to work with anyone at or above my skill level. I can share my current work as a measure of that level.
