Ted Leonsis brings The DMV to the top of the AFL
The old expression that two is better than one seems to be Washington businessman and AFL Owner Ted Leonsis motto. After announcing in March that he would be bringing the AFL back to Washington D.C. to add to his already impressive resume, Leonsis and his company Monumental Sports & Entertainment announced last month that they would be adding a second expansion team, bringing the AFL to Baltimore for the first time.
eBay Today #2 - A Phantom Arena Teams Merchandise
We are back again with more "off the wall" AFL finds on Ebay. This time, we've uncovered some phantom Arena Football merchandise. No, not the old Toronto Phantoms, although you can find some old Phantom mascot bobbleheads and other items pop up from time to time. But, this week we'll be pointing out some actual products that were made for an af2 team that never even hit the field!
An Homage to the Orlando Predators
No city should ever lose a sports franchise at any level. There's just too much invested in each franchise. Too many fans, too many players, too many coaches, too many guys who sell popcorn, too many interns who are just hoping to get a start in sports. When a team goes away at any level, all of that goes away, too.
eBay Today #1 - Tampa Bay Storm replica ArenaBowl ring
We are kicking off a new feature series here at ArenaFan. We're combing through the depths of Arena Football League related items that can be found on eBay and will present them to you every so often. Our first eBay Today feature is a Tampa Bay Storm replica 1991 ArenaBowl championship ring.
The Fortune that will Bind Arena Football and Prominence
Before climbing up the ladder of success as the CEO of Foxwoods Resort Casino, Butera played Division III football as a defensive end for his school, Trinity College. In a way, this may have played a role in his full-time shift from casino executive to arena football commissioner.
Rattlers a no-show as Soul roll to title
You can't spot a great football team a 21-point lead seven minutes into any game. The Arizona Rattlers simply did not show up to play in ArenaBowl 29 on Friday afternoon at Gila River Arena about a half hour west of their usual home field -- the Snake Pit in downtown Phoenix.
Soul win ArenaBowl XXIX 56-42
END OF GAME - The Philadelphia Soul are the champions of the world. After failing against Arizona twice in the ArenaBowl before, the Soul overcame nearly coughing up a 21-point lead to win their second championship in franchise history. The Soul used a strong fourth quarter to put together their 56-42 victory. Continuing coverage of ArenaBowl XXIX is right here at ArenaFan.com.
Rattlers Turn Over ArenaBowl XXIX to Soul
21-0. Thats how the ArenaBowl began. Advantage Philadelphia Soul. Then the game began. The Arizona Rattlers fought back to tie the game 42-42 at the 14:50 mark in the 4th quarter.
ArenaFan Staff Makes ArenaBowl XXIX Picks
As has become an annual tradition at ArenaFan, our staff has made its selections for who we all think will win ArenaBowl XXIX between the Arizona Rattlers and the Philadelphia Soul.
Super Soul Prove Doubters Wrong, Win ArenaBowl XXIX
GLENDALE, AZ - I was wrong. I was absolutely dead wrong, and I didn't think the Philadelphia Soul had the horses to run with the Arizona Rattlers in ArenaBowl XXIX. I didn't think they had the mental toughness to overcome when things went wrong in the raucous Snake Pit. And I was wrong.
Take Three: Soul and Rattlers meet again
There have been no two teams better than the Philadelphia Soul and Arizona Rattlers over the last six years. Statistically speaking, the Rattlers are 86-20 and the Soul are 70-36, the top two records of the eight teams in the AFL. The two best quarterbacks in the league? Nick Davila (Rattlers QB,) and Dan Raudabaugh (Soul QB.) This is the best of the best in the AFL, with seemingly a top five player at every position.
AFL could reach tipping point moment with ArenaBowl XXIX
ArenaBowl XXIX is just 24 hours away, and the match-up between the Arizona Rattlers and the Philadelphia Soul is just about everything the AFL could have ever asked for. These two teams are now both 15-3 this year with one loss for each of them against the other one.
Sixth title would cement Rattlers as GOAT
The Arizona Rattlers have a unique opportunity this Friday not only do they have a chance to win an Arena Football League record sixth overall championship, they also can cement their standing as the greatest franchise in AFL history.
Physicality To Be Key in ArenaBowl XXIX
There are a lot of really smart people in the Arena Football League, and I've had the pleasure of interviewing several of them over the course of the last week. Most recognize the fact that the Philadelphia Soul are going to be decided underdogs on the road against the Arizona Rattlers in ArenaBowl XXIX on Friday night, but the common bond, regardless of who you speak to, suggests that physicality is going to end up being the key to the game.
Soul Head to Third ArenaBowl in Five Years
It wasn't pretty and it wasn't easy. But somehow someway, the Philadelphia Soul found a way to advance to their fourth ArenaBowl in team history defeating the Jacksonville Sharks 55-50.
The Good, the Bad, the Ugly - Wrapping up the 2016 Tampa Bay Storm Season
It was a fitting end to an absolutely abysmal 2016 season. The worst season in Tampa Bay Storm history, in fact. While Sunday night in Allentown, PA marked the 23rd postseason appearance for the Storm franchise, this one just felt a little different. In a year where all eight teams in the Arena Football League qualified for the playoffs, the Storm limped into their first round matchup against the Philadelphia Soul with a regular season record of 2-14. Let's take a quick look at just how the Storm got there. The diehards should look away here
The Greatest Game in Arena Football League History
ORLANDO -- I was there in Arizona when the Sharks won their first championship at the gun when Aaron Garcia won the ArenaBowl. I was there when David Cool kicked the winning field goal in the net right in front of me to give the Predators won their second championships. I've watched the confetti fall from the ceiling at 15 different ArenaBowls in total. I've watched Joe Hills score eight touchdowns and Garcia throw 12. I've watched Cleveland's magical run in 2014. I've seen just about all there is to see in this league.
AFL Power Rankings through Week 18
As I think back to the 2016 AFL season, I'll remember a number of awesome moments both on and off the field. Joe Hills scoring eight touchdowns in a game. T.T Toliver essentially rewriting the record books. Nick Davila quietly putting up one of the best seasons a quarterback has ever had in this league. The Amway Center standing as one in the #OrlandoUnited campaign.
AFL Power Rankings through Week 16
Remember last week when I said that a 17-point loss was a good as a win for the Predators? They sure celebrated like that when Mark Lewis' field goal went through the uprights with just 0:05 left to play last Monday night. Kevin Guy didn't really like it all that much, but Orlando did what it had to do to set itself up for its Week 18 showdown with Philly for the conference title. It'll go down as a loss for the Predators, but let's face the facts here. That loss was as good as a win.
Changing Rules Midway Through the Game
Ah, the Arena Football League.
The only league I can recall that will literally change the rules during the game. Or in this case, during the season, with only two weeks left in it before the playoffs.
BREAKING: Les Moss fired as coach of Sharks
The Jacksonville Sharks are parting ways with the only coach they've ever known. After almost seven full seasons on the job, Les Moss has been relieved of his duties after the Sharks dropped to 5-9 and were eliminated from any possibility of hosting a playoff game for the second straight season.
Moss firing a sign of organizational failure in Jacksonville
Coaches are hired to be fired. Rare is the circumstance in which a coach is hired to play out rest of his career and to be the lone coach for decades at a time for the franchise which hired him in the first place. Les Moss was an institution in North Florida. Up until Monday, he was the only coach the Jacksonville Sharks ever knew.
Winning a meaningful game thew hard way
The Los Angeles KISS have never played in a game with this magnitude in the history of the franchise. Sure every team will be playing when the final week concludes the regular season, but last night already had the feel of a playoff game with so much on the line to stay in LA to start the playoffs. Over 8000 fans knew what was at stake, and the KISS fed off of the vibes for the first 53 minutes of the game.
