I found my new favorite Office365 feature - Share as Attachment as PDF

Thu, 30 Mar 2017 09:00:00 -0500

This is one of the biggest time consumers for me in my daily routine is sending documents to external users (customers) and having to create a pdf of that file each time. The workflow today is: 1. Open the document in Word 2. File | Save As, select PDF as file type, Hit Save 3. Create a new email in Outlook 4. Attach the PDF, selecting it from the drop down It's kind of wasteful as I never use the PDF's again. They just sit there in the folder, taking up space. What I found today is that I can do this with fewer steps AND not worry about saving the PDF each time. Here is what you do: 1. Here is a document open in Microsoft Word. Click the "Share" button in the upper right hand part of the application. 2. That will open the Share sidebar panel. Click the "Send as attachment" link at the bottom of the panel. 3. The panel will change giving you two options. Click the "Send a PDF" link. 4. A new email will open with a PDF attachment of the ...

IBM Connect 2017 highlights the Negative and Emotional Impact of IBM’s Co-Location policy

Thu, 23 Feb 2017 14:45:00 -0500

The effects of IBM's new co-location policy have hit close to home this week at IBM Connect 2017. I have had numerous IBMers basically say good-bye this week. They either have been given their notice and have no intention of moving, or they see the writing on the wall. Some are even leaving IBM immediately after the conference. It hit me this morning that over two-thirds of the conversations I am having with IBMers this week ends with 'I am interviewing' or 'I will not be moving and leaving sometime before summer.' The thought that the company with the DNA of one the most successful software products ever created to facilitate remote team collaboration is requiring everyone on a team to be in the same home office is almost inconceivable. But when you look at it from a capital expense vs. operating expense, you understand what is going on. I feel like I need to shower every time I realize the facts behind the policy. To all of my IBM friends, whom I have known for years, many decades ...

TechAltar - How to cure a fanboy

Mon, 30 Jan 2017 08:11:38 -0500

Volker posted this video and I think the exercise is brilliant. So here are my three favorite things for each company: Apple: 1. My iPhone is my single most used device, and it just works. I read email, work with my calendar, interact with social, talk with people via voice and text, and consume video and pictures more on my iPhone than any other method. And I can't remember the last time it didn't get the job done. 2. Apple created the modern app store model, which allows me to find an app to do just about anything I want. Apps like MobileDay, ShackNews Lastest Chatty, Uber, and so much more - that I use every day - are here because of Apple. Google: 1. Google Maps changed the game when it comes to navigation. I remember going from maps to MapQuest. Google maps changed everything. GPS and maps are now standard in pretty much anything we do. OpenTable, Yelp, Facebook, etc. Google pushed this forward. 2. Google search changed the way I operate from the ground up. Need to learn abo ...

NATO officially recognizes cyberspace as domain for war

Mon, 5 Dec 2016 11:42:53 -0500

I missed this announcement this summer, and from some quick searching, it seems most people missed it as well. On June 14th, 2016, The North Atlantic Treaty Organization added cyberspace to the definition of war, adding them to land, sea, and air. Why is that important? Let me quote from the article: Making cyberspace an official war zone means attacks carried out in that manner can trigger an Article 5 response, which is a collective action by the 28-member organization against the perpetrator of an incident aimed at any NATO-protected state. Before, only actions in traditional war frontiers -- land, sea or air -- had that potential. Let that thought sink for a moment. Given that I am reading this post the US-election and the accusations of Russia's hacking of the DNC, Hillary for America Campaign, and other potential hacks, could we see the US invoke Article 5 in the near future? ...

There is plenty of space between a Lovefest and The Sky is Falling

Wed, 31 Aug 2016 09:00:00 -0500

There is a place between "I am the Yes Man for Notes/Domino/XPages" and "Notes is Dead and I am doing something else" that many live in. I find it hard to believe that people attending MWLUG or any IBM user group didn't realize that PSC works with other technologies other than IBM. At over 100 consultants, we do many things. Mark and I both talk at events for other technologies and vendors. And we are not alone. I am not one to believe that the sky is ever falling. I was also one to never believe that any one technologist should attach themselves to a single product for their entire career. I was talking about the intersection of Notes & Domino with Microsoft Office and OpenOffice.org almost 15 years ago at Lotusphere. Diversity is not only good for the career, it is good for the brain. I also understand the passion and emotion so many people have attached to this community. Friendships have been formed that mean the world to so many. And yes, when people realize that many of th ...

Why LDC Via? The non-technical reason for our strategic partnership

Tue, 23 Aug 2016 11:00:00 -0500

Last week at MWLUG 2016, PSC was proud to announce our new strategic partnership with LDC and their Via offering. It is getting some coverage in the community, and when we get the press releases out, hopefully some press attention. I have been asked "Why?" quite a bit since that announcement. There are a bunch of technical reasons and I will let Mark talk about that. Keep an eye on his blog for the next few weeks for some specific technical discussion. But let's talk from a business point of view. What I care about is what helps me in my effort to help my current customers and get one ones. Yes, I am in sales - you all know that. So how does this fit into my sales strategy? It's really simple. We have many customers who are existing Notes client, Domino Web, & XPages customers who are looking for options to move their applications off the platform. Let's put all the emotional stuff aside, but this year has seen a massive increase on that request. And it's no secret that PSC has ...
