Leggett Joins Health and Human Services and Police Department Staff to Celebrate 40th Anniversary of Abused Persons Program

County Executive Isiah Leggett will join Raymond Crowel, Psy.D., chief of Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services’ (DHHS) Behavioral Health and Crisis Services; Detective Jordan Satinsky, Montgomery County Police Department and managers and staff from DHHS’ Abused Persons Program and Victim Assistance and Sexual Assault Program to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the County’s Abused Persons Program. The program has been serving domestic violence victims and their families in Montgomery County since 1976.

More than 50 community volunteers will be recognized for providing more than 11,000 hours of service to victims of violent crime, sexual assault and domestic violence. Volunteers are available to victims 24 hours daily, 365 days per year and provide assistance for victims at hospitals for forensic evaluations and accompany them to court appearances. Leggett to Participate in Linkages to Learning Volunteer Recognition Ceremony

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett will join Linkages to Learning staff to honor and celebrate volunteers and donors who invested significant time and resources to the program in the past year. The event is being held during National Volunteer Appreciation Week and is sponsored by Choice Hotels International.

The ceremony will include presentation of the 2016 Linkages to Learning Michael L. Subin Scholarship to a former youth participant in Linkages to Learning who has demonstrated a commitment to community service.

Leggett to Participate in Reopening and Ribbon Cutting for Public Libraries’ Kensington Park Branch

Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett will participate in a ribbon cutting ceremony to formally reopen the newly refreshed Public Libraries Kensington Park Branch. Leggett will be joined by Councilmember George Leventhal, State Delegate Jeffrey D. Waldstreicher, Town of Kensington Mayor Peter Fosselman, Director of the Departments of Public Libraries, Parker Hamilton and General Services Director David Dise

Renovations include:

• Full-service elevator to provide access to the library’s lower-level meeting rooms and restrooms;
• Redesigned children’s space;
• New circulation desk;
• Interior design upgrades such as new carpeting and paint;
• Improved Wi-Fi;
• Additional power outlets;
• New technology to include a mobile device charging station, laptops for in-house use loan and a 3D printer.

County Executive Ike Leggett Launches Design for Life Website

County Executive Ike Leggett will be joined by Councilmember Nancy Floreen to launch the new Design for Life Building Accessible Homes website.

The media is invited to the first public review of the website, which provides information for homeowners and building professionals.

The “Design for Life Montgomery” legislation -- Bill 5-13 – Property Tax Credits–Accessibility – went into effect July 1, 2014, and recently several homes have been completed that have earned tax credit from the bill.

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett will be joined by Ambassador Mari Carmen Aponte at the Montgomery Sister Cities Annual Meeting. Aponte will share on her years of experience as an advocate for the United States in El Salvador.

Leggett established a Sister City program in 2006 to connect Montgomery County to the world by encouraging and fostering friendship, partnership, and mutual cooperation through educational, cultural, social, economic, humanitarian, and charitable exchanges between the people of Montgomery County and people from various nations around the world.

The meeting will celebrate the diverse cultures and cuisines from the County’s Sister Cities in Morazán, El Salvador; Gondar, Ethiopia; Xi’an China; and, Hyderabad, India.< ...more




Catherine Leggett and Councilmember Navarro to attend Fashion Boot Camp Finale

Montgomery County’s First Lady Catherine Leggett will be joined by Councilmember Nancy Navarro at the Fashion Boot Camp 101 finale. Mrs. Leggett will emcee the fashion show which is the culminating event of the eight-week long program.

Fashion Boot Camp 101 aims to teach middle and high school students what it takes to be successful in the modeling industry. Students participated in “boot camp” style workshops that trained students to walk, strike a pose and coordinate looks. They also learned about behind-the-scenes production that is needed to bring a fashion show to life.

Leggett to Announce Next Phase of Campaign to Reduce Pedestrian Collisions in Parking Lots -CANCELLED

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett will describe the next phase of the County’s ongoing education campaign to improve pedestrian safety and reduce pedestrian collisions in parking lots. In Montgomery County, approximately one in four pedestrian collisions occur in parking lots.

Joining Leggett will be Montgomery County Councilmembers Roger Berliner, Sidney Katz, and Nancy Navarro; Montgomery County Department of Transportation Director Al Roshdieh, Montgomery County Police Traffic Division Director Captain Thomas Didone, Fire Division Chief Alan Hinde, and chair of the Pedestrian, Bicycle and Traffic Safety Advisory Committee Darrel Drobnich.

Leggett to Present FY 2017 Operating Budget

Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett will present his recommended operating budget for FY 2017 and highlight his budget priorities.

The press conference will be broadcast live on County Cable Montgomery, Channel 6 for RCN and Comcast subscribers and Channel 30 for Verizon subscribers. The conference can also be viewed live on the County’s website at www.montgomerycountymd.gov/ccm.

Parking: Public parking is available on the lower level of the Council Office Building garage at the corner of Monroe and Jefferson streets.

Leggett to Lead Wheaton Library Closing Ceremony

County Executive Ike Leggett will be joined by Councilmembers George Leventhal and Nancy Navarro, Public Libraries Director Parker Hamilton and representatives from the Friends of the Library, Montgomery County, Inc. to officially close the Wheaton branch. The event will include light refreshments and brief remarks from officials before Leggett formally closes the facility.

The library will be closed to begin construction for the new combined Wheaton Library and Community Recreation Center, which is expected to open in 2018. The new facility will be built on the site of the existing library.
