I wrote a blog post at about this time last year that was reproduced in The Morning Call with the headline: "Phils need new theme song: 'Low Hopes.'"
It mostly as a lament about how bad the team was going to be and how little talent they had in the system. This manifested itself in a lousy...

There was a question in my column today that I didn't actually answer.
Writing about our state Legislature and two big issues it finally had confronted, medical marijuana and child sex abuse statutes of limitations, I wrote:
"Hey, who wants to be the politician who is indifferent to...

I asked readers of last Wednesday's post to suggest names for the Lehigh Valley's Entertainment Mount Rushmore. I had in mind the four most nationally/internationally known performers with legitimate Lehigh Valley roots.
Unfortunately, I tacked this request onto the end of a post that mostly...

I tend to pack my lunch rather than go out to eat, a combination of busyness and cheapness.
But with the grand opening of Vince's Cheesesteaks in the former Tony Luke's site in downtown Allentown, I think I'll be reserving at least one day a week for takeout.
Vince's and I go way back,...

I mentioned in Sunday's column that I had heard from a woman who was dismayed at the letter inserted into her church bulletin two Sundays ago. Bishop John O. Barres was lobbying parishioners to contact their state legislators in opposition to bills that would extend the statute of limitations...

Fox's three-night celebration of "American Idol" ended Thursday night with the crowning of Mississippi farm boy Trent Harmon as its final winner.
We've been watching all season, and I felt they got the best two singers into the final and I didn't much care which of them won. I would argue...

Another reader tracked down a card suitable for commenting on people's bad parking, the subject of some recent columns and blog posts. He wrote:
"Enjoyed following your columns on parking complaints. Knew I had a couple of these squirreled away somewhere, but it took some time to dig one...

Last week's call for candidates to go on the Lehigh Valley's Sports Mount Rushmore brought some great names but also left a few good ones out. Once we review all those, I'll have a new Mount Rushmore challenge for you.
First, the people who were mentioned, either in the Comments here or...

My disappointment at North Carolina's loss in Monday night's amazing NCAA basketball final was mitigated by two good things.
1. Villanova is a great program and played a terrific game. It's a team that's very easy to root for.
2. I had clinched victory in my biggest NCAA Tournament...

My annual call for Hall of Fame nominations appeared in Sunday's newspaper, but it wasn't posted to The Morning Call website until a few minutes ago, so the response has been tepid so far.
Still, I've already received one nomination on an unrelated blog post, so I figured I'd better get...

One of the readers responding to my column Thursday about Donald Trump acknowledged that he's a bad guy but suggested that Hillary Clinton is an even worse person than he is.
Believe me when I tell you that I am no fan of Hillary Clinton. I find her inauthentic, ambitious, calculating --...

I've mentioned before that I'm a registered Republican, although I have no particular loyalty to the party. I engage in strategic registration so I get to vote in the most interesting primary elections and so we get mail and calls from both parties at home.
As a result, I've had fun a couple...

Now that "What Is It?" has become at best an occasional feature, I need to come up with a new weekly challenge.
Let's start with this:
If you were carving a Mount Rushmore of the Lehigh Valley's greatest sports figures, whose faces would you put up there?
I've tried this same...

Our son, Andy, age 3-4 as best I can recall, was racing around a Lehigh Valley Mall department store one time when he grabbed a hanging belt and pulled a whole rack of them down on top of himself.
He wasn't hurt -- which was lucky, because the belts were hanging from spikes on the rack...

When it comes to March Madness bracket sheets, I am a chump.
Actually, I'm lousy at every form of prognostication. My political predictions are notoriously terrible, too, and I always pick the slowest line in the grocery store.
One of my spring traditions is to do a blog post about another...

I get most of my candy from Mink's at the Allentown Farmers Market. Christmas, Easter, birthdays and my weekly fix of gummies. They're great.
We also enjoy Josh Early, where I'll occasionally get gifts or special Christmas candy.
My third candy shop of choice has been Chocolate Lab...

As I’ve written before, there’s plenty of criticism to go around in the state budget impasse, which had a devastating effect on our schools and social services.
I thought new Gov. Tom Wolf poisoned the well with some of his early comments, making it more difficult to sell a compromise...

I probably should be more accommodating with what may turn out to be my final "What Is It?" item, but I've decided no one had the correct answer.
MUGTECH came the closest by answering, "Foot massager," but that not only is too narrow, it also misses the main feature of this item.

Readers' pet peeves about bad drivers and other indignities continue to trickle in, including two variations on the fake Parking Citation I mentioned in my most recent edition.
The one I wrote about, produced by KnockKnockstuff.com, was lime green and began, "It seems you've had some trouble...
