Mayor Jorge Elorza today announced that the City will hold its Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, an effort that aims to reduce prescription drug misuse by collecting unused and expired drugs from residents, this Saturday, October 22, 2016 from 10:00am to 2:00pm.

The City of Providence will host the annual holiday tree lighting ceremony on Friday December 2nd & Saturday, December 3rd at Providence City Hall and the Alex & Ani City Center Skating Rink in Kennedy Plaza. To complete preparations, the City needs 2 evergreen trees: a 35-foot to 45-foot spruce or fir tree to grace City Hall steps and a 15-foot to 20-foot spruce or fir tree for the Providence Rink. The City is asking residents to nominate their own trees that they wish the City to remove from their property.

PROVIDENCE, RI - Mayor Jorge Elorza today welcomed a delegation of dignitaries from the country of Guatemala to Providence City Hall for the signing of a Sister City agreement between the City of Providence and Guatemala City. The group led by former President of the Republic of Guatemala and current mayor of the country's capital city, Álvaro Enrique Arzú, is visiting Rhode Island's capital city as part of the PVD+GTM Summit.

PROVIDENCE, RI - Mayor Jorge O. Elorza today announced the PVD+GTM Summit, scheduled for October 11-14 the Summit will convene local officials and stakeholders, as well as a delegation of dignitaries from the country of Guatemala led by former president and current mayor of Guatemala's capital city, Álvaro Arzú. The summit is an effort to strengthen commercial, tourist, cultural, and educational relations between the City of Providence and Guatemala City.

Mayor Jorge Elorza today announced he is appointing former army Colonel Michael Borg to serve as Director of the Department of Public Works.
"Michael has spent his career leading complex operations when timely success is critical," said Mayor Elorza. "I know that the experience he brings from the armed forces, combined with the intricate knowledge of Providence that he developed while leading PEMA, make him the ideal candidate to make sure our Department of Public Works delivers for neighborhoods throughout the city."

Mayor Elorza today announced this season's conclusion of Summer Recreation programs throughout the city. This year's expanded offerings included dozens of camp activities, municipal pools and water parks - including a new splash park, the city's summer meals program, high school basketball league, swim meet, little league tournament, and educational programming to promote daily reading.

Elorza today joined members of the City Council, Parks Superintendent Wendy Nilsson, Recreation Director Michael Stephens, and Joslin Recreation Center Director Elmer Stanley in a ribbon cutting ceremony for the City's new Splash Water Park. The outdoor play space is designed to be opened throughout the year and provides children and adults a unique experience as the structures and equipment can be enjoyed without the presence of water.
