30th Annual Apple Festival

42nd Annual 15K Run around the Block

If this years event is anything like last years, it will be the bivalve bash of the season. Last year, almost 400 people turned out and just about 4000 oysters were consumed from six different oyster farms in Rhode Island. The competition for speediest shucker will be fast and furious, as participants work their knives and their signature techniques around shell after shell, releasing the sweet meat of the sea in the quest for sweet victory, bragging rights, and prizes. The event runs from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and costs 20 per person for two drinks and all the oysters you can eat. Kids 12 and under are free, as long as they are with a parent. While the oysters will be in the raw, we suggest casual attire for the humans.

This September they will be descending on the Audubon Society of Rhode Islands Environmental Education Center in Bristol, RI for Raptor Weekend 2017. Block Island Inshore Fishing Tournament
The fishing starts at 6pm Friday and culminates at the noon weigh-in on Sunday. While many island businesses donate prizes for winners, the real score is a years worth of bragging rights for the biggest fish landed. And dont think the old salts with their decades of experience have all the advantages. In 2013, a 9-year-old boy took the prize for best fish overall with a 26 lb. 2 oz. Striped Bass. The tournament is hosted by the Block Island Lions Club and proceeds benefit the National Childrens Cancer Society.

Oakland Beach Shoreline Cleanup
Come help clean up Oakland beach Shoreline trash is ugly and dangerous to wildlife, and shoreline cleanups are an easy way for volunteers to make a difference. Save The Bay will provide the trash bags and disposable gloves. All volunteers should dress for the weather and wear clothes they dont mind getting dirty. Closed-toed shoes are required. All volunteers must be able to do some light to moderate bending and lifting. Volunteers under 16 must participate with an adult. Volunteers must have their own transportation to the event. All volunteers are encouraged to bring their own reusable gloves, water bottle and snacks to the cleanup event.

International Coastal Cleanup Day
Description The International Coastal Cleanup is the worlds largest volunteer effort for our ocean. People all over the world remove trash from the shores and document what they find. The 1777 British Occupation Summer Living History Event
Over 50 costumed interpreters will recreate aspects from the summer of 1777 on Aquidneck Island during the first year of the British occupation. Reenactment scenarios will range from the capture of General Prescott by the American rebels, to a demonstration of the auctioning of scarce food items and goods, to the ever-intimidating presence of British guards.

Jazz Revelations - Jake DAmbra Group
The Jake DAmbra Group will perform the music of saxophonist Charles Lloyd. Joining Jake DAmbra on tenor sax, will be Warren Pettey on keyboard, Ian Bano on double bass, and Shane Dhler on drums, with special guest Clay Nordhill on guitar. Admission will be 10 cash at the door. Funding for this concert will be provided in part by a grant from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, through an appropriation by the Rhode Island General Assembly, a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and private funders.

The Ladies of Linden Place Mansion Tour
A special docent-led tour of the 200-year old mansion rooms where the women of Linden Place come alive through portraits, photographs, artifacts and more. Learn about generations of DeWolf and Colt women and the daily lives and roles of ladies in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Hear the stories about the different women who lived and worked at Linden Place Mansion from 1810 through 1986 a slave traders wife, a widow, who to make ends meet turned Linden Place into a boarding house, the social grand dame of Bristol, and an Oscar award winning actress Ethel Barrymore, who spent summers at Linden Place. String Instrument Playground
The Community String Project is presenting a String Instrument Playground for high school students and adults. This event will provide a hands-on opportunity for anyone interested in learning more about string instruments. Musicians from the Community String Project will perform on the violin, viola, cello and bass.
