Mintz & Hoke hired Sharon Harper as a social media/public relations associate. Organic announced the launch of BroadFeed, the first iPad social magazine that leverages social weighting. Pictela announced today the hire of Jessica Morris as publisher relationship manager. RadiumOne closed a $21 million Series B funding round led by Crosslink Capital. DFJ Esprit also participated in the round along with previous investors Adams Street Partners and Trinity Ventures, bringing total funding to $33.5 million. Rockfish announced the launch of Rockfish Brand Ventures, a venture capital capability that improves marketing ROI for its clients. Rockfish also announced the addition of Mike Yonker as vice president, mobile and  coming Hugh DeWitte as vice president, strategy and insights. How to get the most out of a conference
The first industry conference I attended was a total blur. Half the meetings I planned went bust for one reason or another. The seminars I sat in on were good, but usually I'd hear things like, "you should have been at X. It was amazing!" And when I finally got back to the office three days later, I couldn't make heads or tails of 90 percent of the business cards I had been given. Since that first conference, I've managed to do a lot better. But there's always room for improvement. With a robust 2011 conference schedule already underway, I thought it was a good time to talk about some of the tips and strategies you can use to make the most of your event time. I reached out to several industry veterans and asked them how they make the most of the conferences they attend. But rather than throwing their advice at you wholesale, I've divided the article into three sections -- pre-conference, conference, and post-conference. But please note that tradeshows come in many flavors. To keep the advice useful to the greatest number of people, I've chosen to refrain from listing any specific show. Some conferences are three-day affairs for the masses, while others are selective one-night events. But no matter what kind of show we're talking about, knowing how to organize yourself ahead of time, manage your experience while there, and follow up effectively after the event, will help make the most of any conference you attend. Yes, I'll be thereAbout a month before a conference, I tend to get bombed with emails. Some are from old friends asking if I'll be there, others are from people I've never met asking pretty much the same thing. Everyone wants to know if you have 10 minutes to hear about the greatest thing ever that will totally change your life, career, and the way you think about digital advertising. Ok. You got me. Not all of the emails are that hyperbolic, but many of them are. And at the very least, they all sound like a good chance to network. But how do you make plans that will make the most of your time? Do your homework."I do a ton of pre-work in terms of figuring out who will be attending, who will be speaking, and who will be sponsoring," says Tim Rumpler, VP of consumer marketing at imc². "I then try to pre-seed the attendee list with notice that I'll be there, too. Clearly this is most effective where I have a pre-existing relationship, but a lot of times I will get email responses back from people that I have never met trying to set up a time to meet." Taking those introductory emails to another level, Traction CEO Adam Kleinberg makes pre-conference connections in a way that lets colleagues choose their level of engagement. "Before I go, I always scan the attendee list to get a sense of who might be a valuable connection to meet," says Kleinberg. "If they seem like someone I'd really like to increase my chances of having a meaningful conversation with, I'll find them on LinkedIn and use an InMail to reach out to them. If they accept, I'll drop them a quick note with a link to a blog post to read on the plane or a video documentary on my agency, if they have six minutes to kill. I'm specific about the six minutes. Only a handful of people will take the time to check out my content, but the ones that do, show up thinking I'm someone worth their while to talk to."
