Tue, 30 May 2017 08:22:11 GMT

Serverless computing in a way has been there for long. In an Infrastructure As A Service setup the end users are not physically managing servers, but serverless computing takes this paradigm a step ahead. It enables developers execute function using exact amount of computing resources needed.

Would there be a market?

Mon, 27 Jun 2016 18:45:25 GMT

As I continued to think about my last post, I started to try to figure out how one could go about setting up some sort of training/apprenticeship program and make it work in a way that would be feasible for both the students/apprentices and the "school"/training facility. If this were to be an adjunct to or replacement for attending college/university, the idea would be to NOT cause the students/apprentices

Are we preparing todayss high school and university students for tomorrow's needs?

Mon, 20 Jun 2016 18:36:41 GMT

I now have grandkids who are entering their senior year of high school as well as one who is entering his freshman year. Although they are attending an outstanding school, I recently learned (after making a casual inquiry) that they are NOT having any real exposure to programming languages, much less anything to do with databases. That got me to thinking about, among other things, my high school

Am I about to come full circle?

Mon, 18 Apr 2016 02:04:32 GMT

I started out my career as an application developer. (Of course, this was in the days before the term ?DBA? had been invented, so perhaps that shouldn?t be so much of a surprise. ;-) This was in the days of ?big? mainframes (i.e. IBM 360?s) and ?minicomputers? (that had a maximum RAM capacity of maybe 256Kb but more likely 128Kb). The first position I held that included the term ?Programmer? in

Some questions for database project managers to answer

Thu, 18 Feb 2016 21:33:11 GMT

I little while back, I became involved in a project that was (originally) described as a "simple project involving some ETL needs". Well, to say the least, this has been an education in the vagaries of contract work and the extent to which clients can complicate your life.

What is Design Thinking?

Wed, 06 Jan 2016 13:27:27 GMT

There's been a flood of talk about this idea called Design Thinking. I was listening to an interview with John Maeda (with Kleiner Perkins) last night and he was talking about Design Thinking and how it's moving into the "c-suite" for decision making.

Welcome to the age of the "Participation Trophy" Help/Support desk!

Fri, 04 Dec 2015 02:33:24 GMT

I've just spent the better part of a day trying to get some assistance from Help/Support desks (in person, by phone, and by chats). The summary of my results is that I a) got the "run around", b) got totally incorrect "help", c) got hung up on after hanging been put on hold for 1 hour and 12 minutes, and d) got told that "I'll have someone call you back within the hour." only to not only receive no
