Honor's Reward

Sun, 01 Feb 2009 23:46:48 +0000

A couple of months ago Barry Arnold taught Sunday school. He talked about the Glory of nature and how we are to respect and honor the amazing work God has created. The upshot was that God had created the universe and all things within it, and that if we dishonor creation and all that God is doing we dishonor God himself. As I have listened to the current “Honor’s Reward” series I am struck with the thought that “Honor” is less a matter of behavior and more a matter of character. That is, similar to “Love” it is less behavioral and more a “fruit” of the Holy Spirit. When we receive the “Love of God” it permeates our being in such a way that we can not view the world without “Love” altering our perception of the world. Love can not be faked by adhering to trite precepts such as “Christians are supposed to love so we can reach people for Christ” or “ I must Love to be in God’s will..so I need to be nice to others.” Love is not a duty it is the essential nature of God. It is the essence of true life itself. I suspect (this is a learning experience for me) that “Honor” can really be described as an integral part of the quintessential nature of God Just as contempt, dishonor, indifference, and devaluing of others are fundamental characteristics of carnality, “Honor” is a Character/Fruit/Nature/ that is part of the essence of a Holy Spirit-transformed life. In the final analysis, all men are charged with the authority to make determinations for their own souls (they are given power to make decisions regarding eternity in heaven or Hell) this authority is “honored” by the Holy Spirit (God allows them to go to Hell if they so choose). It is not enough that I do the “right thing” at the three levels of authority (those above, my peers& those under me). I may well no longer speak evil of political leaders, church leaders, or a father of a family. I may say nice things to my friends. I may be kind to my children, my employees and others under me. But there is still one thing missing…... “Honor” is more caught that taught. Finally, we must call on God to purify our hearts that we become a people that Honor God’s creation and His plans. To honor is not within the nature of man, it is the nature of God. In truth we are in desperate need of God changing our hearts to “Honor” Him and works. Michael
