Live: Algiers @ Temple (Athens, February 10th, 2018)

2018-02-11T23:38:26.136+02:00

Algiers, the gospel-punk quartet that last year unleashed its second album, the fierce, politically charged "The Underside Of Power" (one of our Top Albums of 2017), made its live debut in Athens on Saturday, giving a fittingly hell-raising performance that will certainly be one of the highlights of the year for everyone who witnessed it. For 90 minutes Algiers raised the roof of the(image)

R.I.P. Mark E. Smith, Hip Priest of The Fall group

2018-01-25T22:17:28.431+02:00

It's a very strange feeling to suddenly find myself in a world where there is not going to be another new LP by The Fall, a constant source of pleasure for me for the last three and a half decades. I bet, though, that the group's 25th Peel Session is being organized as we speak in some other dimension, with a brand new line up... Here are a few highlights selected from the 27 posts we (image)

The Return of The Breeders

2018-01-14T20:26:49.112+02:00

It's been ten years since The Breeders' last album, 2008's "Mountain Battles", but as we found out earlier this week, the wait for the next one is almost over. The title of the band's fifth album is "All Nerve" and it will be out on March 2nd via 4AD. It will be the first album to feature the line up that recorded the band's most successful album to date, the 1993 classic "Last Splash", (image)

Top 50 Albums of 2017

2018-01-01T22:51:51.684+02:00

2018 is here already and along with our warmest wishes for the New Year, we are presenting today our 50 favorite albums of 2017 and the perfect soundtrack to start Cool Music Central's tenth year on Blogger! It seems unbelievable that we've gotten this far, especially since our beloved rock 'n' roll seems to be losing favor these days, a fact that becomes obvious when you check out the (image)

Top 50 Tracks of 2017

2017-12-26T17:19:17.587+02:00

We're in the last week of the year which means it's time for the two lists that matter the most; our selection of the best new music released in the past 12 months, chosen among the hundreds of cds and digital files plus the few vinyl records (old habits die hard) we have added in our collection in 2017! Let's start today with our 50 favorite tracks of the year and we'll keep, as (image)

Live: The Wedding Present @ Temple (Athens, December 14th, 2017)

2017-12-18T00:26:20.429+02:00

2017 was a year full of comebacks and anniversary re-releases. Although I feel that rock music continues to be as necessary and important today as it’s ever been, at least for me, there is no denying the fact that exciting new rock bands are thin on the ground these days, while so many bands from the past are returning for concerts and release new records which are easily among the best of (image)

Live: Plisskën Festival 2017 (Athens, December 1-2, 2017)

2017-12-06T14:10:54.043+02:00

Liars, live @ Plisskën Festival 2017 The 2017 winter edition of Plisskën Festival followed the same concept as last year with gigs taking place across four stages in three different locations along Pireaus street and the emphasis on electronic and dance music. Rock acts, with the glowing exception of Liars and the dance-rock of Holy Fuck, were left out of the picture and guitar pop was (image)

Listening Habits: 10-11.2017

2017-11-26T23:38:58.854+02:00

The first year-end lists of 2017 are already here, but for now we are going to turn our attention to the albums and songs that earned our appreciation in the last couple of months of the autumn and leave the task of figuring out our "Best of the Year" list for the end of December, as usual. However I can already say with certainty that the two albums at the top of our autumn list have already (image)

Live: Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds @ Tae Kwon Do (Athens, November 16th, 2017)

2017-11-19T19:30:47.637+02:00

"I am transforming, I am vibrating, look at me now!" sings Nick Cave during the climactic finale of "Jubilee Street" and I think these words are the best way to describe his formidable way of commanding the stage and, indeed, the whole of the packed Tae Kwon Do arena on Thursday night. I had the pleasure of attending numerous Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds gigs over the years and each (image)

This is Cool Music Central's 600th post since starting life on Blogger in March 2008! To make it a special one, I decided to dig deep into our past, go through all of our monthly and year-end "Best of" lists and piece together a playlist featuring all the songs that have taken the top spot over the years. You can listen to the result of this endeavor on the Spotify playlist below, featuring (image)

Take a look below at some of our best photos from these shows, as well as video highlights: Thurston Moore Group (October 29th, 2017) This was Thurston Moore's second solo visit in (image)

Listening Habits: 08-09.2017

2017-10-07T20:53:15.132+03:00

The period between the ending of summer and the beginning of autumn is usually associated with a melancholic mood, but with so much great new music coming our way in these last couple of months we didn't really have any reason to feel sad. 2017 is shaping up to be one of the better years in a decade where there is a lot of uncertainty regarding where music as an art form is heading to, (image)

Live: Slowdive @ Fuzz Club (Athens, September 9th, 2017)

2017-09-15T22:42:47.919+03:00

Slowdive's triumphant comeback continues! Last year we had the opportunity to enjoy their first ever gig in Athens at Release Festival and reconnect with their '90s material, this time though we also got the chance to experience live songs from their new album, an excellent work which proves that nostalgia is not the main driving force behind the band's reunion. The seamless way in (image)

Live: The Black Angels @ Piraeus 117 Academy (Athens, September 7th, 2017)

2017-09-10T21:22:48.832+03:00

"Death Song", The Black Angels' fifth album, brought the Austin, Texas, psych-rock quintet back to Athens for a fourth time. After playing in summer festivals on their two previous visits, this time the band was here to do its own gig and present its latest release, one of the year's finest, almost in its entirety. Interestingly enough, the only track off "Death Song" which we didn't (image)

Listening Habits: Summer 2017

2017-08-01T21:30:15.817+03:00

The time has finally come for our much needed summer break, but before we take our leave, let's have another listen to some of the best new albums and re-releases of the last couple of months: At the top of our list of recommended albums for the period May - July 2017 we have the sophomore LP by Algiers, "The Underside of Power", a powerful protest statement for these dark times that (image)

Live: The Jesus And Mary Chain @ Ejekt Festival (Athens, July 14th, 2017)

2017-07-22T00:14:35.370+03:00

The Jesus And Mary Chain, live @ Ejekt Festival 2017 The second day of the 2017 edition of Ejekt Festival was headlined by Kasabian, but the reason we paid a second visit this summer to Plateia Nerou was to witness the return of The Jesus And Mary Chain to Athens after nearly two decades. The last time I saw them in Athens was actually exactly 21 years ago, on July 13th, 1996 when (image)

Live: Foo Fighters @ Herodes Atticus Odeon (Athens, July 10th, 2017)

2017-07-16T23:53:09.828+03:00

This week has been exceptionally busy for live rock music in Athens and the start was certainly one for the history books! It is very rare that the historic Herodes Atticus Odeon theater, right below The Acropolis, is used for rock concerts, but on this occasion it hosted the first ever show in Greece of one of the biggest rock names of the last couple of decades, the Foo Fighters. Top 30 Albums of the first half of 2017

2017-07-09T23:37:55.628+03:00

We've just passed the halfway mark of 2017 and, as usual, we'll take a moment to look back on the last six months and come up with a list that includes most of our favorite albums of the year so far. This year our half-way list is ten albums shorter than last year's, which is an indication that 2017 did not have the best of starts. Actually, after a slow couple of months at the (image)
