Right now Google’s rig takes thirty seconds to produce a shot but I wonder if their rumored acquisition of Lytro would enable them to make light fields in Street View. Feels like that’s got to be the goal? @mdonahoe:Experimenting with a new Skydio Voxels mode in our Android app. I'm streaming map and segmentation data from the R1 to a Pixel 2 phone and then using shaders to render an AR overlay. Still a little rough around the edges, but it's all running in real-time! @dmoren:Is this the first time Apple’s issued a patch for a commercial? [] @jsnell:Analysis of the Uber failure that led to the death of the pedestrian in Tempe. Makes a strong case that Uber’s LIDAR should’ve spotted the pedestrian with plenty of time to avoid. [] If I were Cambridge Analytica, I’d definitely get a female executive to quit and pretend to be a feminist whistleblower while minimizing CA’s responsibility and redirecting blame as much as possibleIt was co-founded by Bannon FFS. When you put on your AirPods for the first time in days and you’re as pleased with their sound as when you bought them I like the AirPods’ sound so much I keep listening to them when I come home, which was never the case with my previous earbuds. (Okay, those were “only” $100—but wired.) @jtemple:It’s possible we called this one wrong

A friend and I both recently switched to more recent iPhones and I am appalled by the amount of noise reduction in photos — it never seemed that bad to me on iPhone 6. Compounded of course, and that part’s not new, by the system app’s refusal to shoot or even display RAW images. Pictures look awful when you zoom in. Of course that doesn’t matter if you’re just posting to your Instagram story, but then for that usage they would also look fine without any noise reduction, so what’s the point? Who benefits? @JenMsft:Demoing some of the handwriting gestures 😊✍️ #WindowsInsiders #WindowsInkHave you tried using the handwriting panel in the lastest builds? @matthewstoller:This is 100% right. Zuckerberg threatening to sue the outlets who broke the stories while giving interviews to the ones who didn't shows that the leadership of Facebook is a part of the problem. [] @pierce:What happens when dockless bike sharing gets way too big, way too fast — These photos are WILD [] Google’s light fields of the space shuttle at the Smithsonian are incredible — it’s weird to see that much detail and texture in a VR headset. But at the same time it’s terribly frustrating that you can’t actually move.

@ezraklein:Unpopular opinion: the way the media covered Hillary Clinton's emails did much more to make Donald Trump president than anything Cambridge Analytica, or even Facebook, did. And it was less defensible on the merits. What to do when you’ve invented telephony but not multiplexing yet? Just ruin the landscape 🤷🏻‍♂️ @math_rachel:Error rates of facial recognition programs for women by shades of skin color (important research by @jovialjoy @timnitGebru) []

Was watching a video about stacking polarizing filters and thought, couldn’t you use that to make a variable neutral-density photography filter? Yes, you can I already loved Notion as a note-taking and -structuring system, but version 2.0 looks extremely impressive with tables, calendars, databases and Kanban boards (without cluttering the experience, as far as I can tell, since everything’s modular) I wasn’t enthusiastic about getting an iPhone with a white face, but it works out fine with grayscale mode — even more paper-like. Shame it doesn’t have True Tone. 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️ So I guess people are thinking, if mining becomes illegal for most people then BTC will be more valuable. Who’s gonna be processing your transactions, genius? @normative:Ok, look, whether or not it’s a “breach” is irrelevant to whether Facebook is culpable or has bad policies. But it’s not pedantic nitpicking to want reports to get this right. It’s important that people understand it’s a policy problem and not some isolated security issue. [] I’d forgotten how dumb it is that there are two levels of 3D Touch on the iPhone’s screen. Thank god Instagram is smart enough to have the same action on long-press and semi-push, even if that’s not Apple’s UX recommendation.

webOS was only partially open-sourced the first time around, wasn’t it? Otherwise why would LG have bought it? Mobile hardware wasn’t quite up to the task in 2009, but you could pretty easily and cheaply have a decent phone or tablet running webOS in 2018. Oh, be still, my heart. Reddit is not perfect but there’s something to be said for a social network willing to embed a journalist in its operations meetings Wonder if generation 3 of AirPods will take advantage of better batteries to become smaller or if the current form factor is optimal for microphone placement Since I’m evidently done with my Apple boycott I just bought a used 7 Plus and 1) I’m in love with the live photo effects and 2) I immediately started thinking about remaking my apps with ARKit goddammit sometimes being a developer means you just can’t help yourself.

@ian:Emoji are a globalist conspiracy to make English speaking programmers care about Unicode. @Pinboard:The work that CA is accused of doing—building "psychographic profiles" based on demographics and online behavior in order to figure out how to segment and market to a vulnerable population—is a succinct description of how Facebook makes money. @austinnotduncan:Google Lens, you had one job. @SaucisseTelecom:Un jeu MB I’ve added a third-party smart plug to my Philips Hue setup (to control a big, bright LED panel) and the relay’s mechanical noise really bothers me. Reminds me every time of a capacitor burning out or a hard drive crashing, and takes a lot away from the electronic magic. @ryaneshea:The truth is Facebook not only allowed but facilitated data sweeps of your friends by shady apps since it was made.Do you know how many co’s harvested sold detailed profiles on you?How many friends traded your data to play FarmVille or find out which Kardashian they are? @sdw:I love this aqua version of the WWDC 2018 graphic @deplaatjesmaker made. Serious throwback. Oh, looks like Apple has solved the “countdown” issue by not recognizing the word anymore and INITIATING A FUCKING PHONE CALL INSTEAD

Am I doing something wrong or is there seriously just one Celsius style for Instagram’s weather sticker?

I haven’t been able to use my Watch in five days because I’m away from home and Apple never deigned to make a portable charger that just plugs into a Lightning cable. @dmoren:You can have the best password hygiene in the world, but you will one day type your password into a text message with your friends and nothing will save you. “A startup is pitching a mind-uploading service that is ‘100 percent fatal’”😰 Established scientifically with the help of a friend — by comparing verbal impressions and listening to leakage in a crowded McDonald’s — that my ears are optimally formed for AirPods and it would have been a crime not to buy them. In completely unrelated news, my right ear is a bit sore when I have the AirPod in (from all the double-tapping to fast-forward through podcasts). Quite @kevinroose:You can tell FB's algorithm changes kicked in because all the partisan meme factories immediately switched from "like and share" to "type yes"

@sarahjeong:"People are sick of the Federal Reserve, sick of bailouts, sick of inflation. You know what we need? Internet money with the usability of PGP and the stability of BART service" I’m suddenly hyper-aware of every sidewalk grate I walk on and could lose my AirPods through.

Tue, 13 Mar 2018 23:59:59 +0100

That’s… a lot of lickable UI elements. Either it’s gonna be the most joyous WWDC in five years or they’re just torturing us. And my money’s on heartless gratuitous torture.

My Mac detects my Watch before I try to log in and remembers that it was locked at the time, even if it isn’t now.If I’m not wearing my Watch, it takes several seconds to realize that and display a password prompt. How can both these things be true in the same implementation. “iPhone X/8: Wireless charging will wear out the battery faster than cable charging”I’ve read conflicting info on whether the iPhone uses the battery while the cable is plugged in but, if this is true, it’s a pretty important thing to know.

Ugh. People tweeting erroneous facts and leaving them up because they’ve gone viral are a much bigger issue than computer-detectable spelling mistakes. So of course let’s fix the spelling mistakes.

@nobbis:Real-time photogrammetry with #ARKit @kscottz:I really want a "tinder but for yelp" app. People keep asking me to pick dinner and brunch spots and I generally find this to be too much work and anxiety. I just want to mindlessly swipe until I find something.
