I am using the excellent WP-CSM Post Control pluin over at http://wp-cms.com/our-wordpress-plugins/post-control-plugin/ - it not only allows you to turn off post revisions, but also Autosave and change the Flash uploader back to the standard HTML uploader. In addition to this you can also control every aspect of the write post/page panel, allowing you to hide rarely used items like trackbacks/pingbacks... highly recommended and has a nice control panel to control this - so no need to edit code to control these features!
