Roadhouse 645

Sat, 15 Jul 2017 16:36:18 -0500

I've got some interesting instrumentation this week, along with a very nice acoustic set and a set of classic blues artists live. Stomptown Brass, Odetta, Little Willie Farmer, Otis Rush, and Big Bill Morganfield are all ahead. In the ongoing endeavor to mix things up, I give you yet another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 645th Roadhouse.(image)

Roadhouse 644

Sat, 08 Jul 2017 20:59:05 -0500

It's blazing hot in The Roadhouse Studions, and a hot hour in The Roadhouse. I've got music from Martin Lang with Oscar Wilson, Robert Cray & Hi Rhythm, Rhiannon Giddens, Hot Roux, and Vintage#18. The 644th Roadhouse is all about great artists, great music and, of course, another great hour of the finest blues you've never heard.(image)

Roadhouse 643

Sat, 01 Jul 2017 19:27:32 -0500

It's a big variety in this hour of The Roadhouse, as you've come to expect. I've got young artists and old. I've got artists who are new to the show and old favorites who haven't been here for awhile. I've got a good mix of male and female, a set of Roots of the Roadhouse blues, a full range of blues instrumentation. In other words, it's all mixed up in another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 643rd Roadhouse.(image)

Roadhouse 642

Sat, 24 Jun 2017 18:03:24 -0500

This hour suits the common ideal of a roadhouse to a tee. asey James, Nick Schnebelen, Lil' Ed & The Blues Imperials, Jason Ricci, and Janiva Magness will take the stage under the blue and red lights. There will be lots of sweat and cold beer and questionable activities going on in the dark. And, straight from the bandstand, a live set will have you knocking around the sawdust. It's another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 642nd Roadhouse.(image)

Roadhouse 641

Sat, 17 Jun 2017 18:49:29 -0500

It's a jumbo edition of The Roadhouse, with more music than any other edition. And, it's a total chair dance. Nick Moss, Big Jon Atkinson & Bob Corritore, Otis Spann, Studebaker John, and the Andy T Band provide a huge show without so much as a break to catch your breath right up to last call. Brace yourself for another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 641st Roadhouse.(image)

Roadhouse 640

Sun, 11 Jun 2017 17:40:24 -0500

This hour of The Roadhouse features a number of Roadhouse debuts - artists who have never graced the tight little bandstand in the corner. And, it's an hour with some youngsters - artists who may have the future of the blues squarely on their shoulders. Linsey Alexander, Gina Sicilia, Jonny Lang, ZZ Ward, and Nick Moran are ahead. If there ever really was a doubt about the tagline of the show, let this be a perfect example of another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 640th Roadhouse.(image)

Roadhouse 639

Sat, 03 Jun 2017 19:36:11 -0500

The theme of the hour is a retrospective on the musical life of Gregg Allman, along with The Allman Brothers Band. Since it's impossible to put together a comprehensive view of their music in just an hour, I've pulled together some of my favorites. I've got a couple of tracks you've heard and some you may not. While it's sad to mark his passing, by the end of the hour, we can celebrate the musical contribution of Gregg Allman. It makes for another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 639th Roadhouse.(image)

Roadhouse 638

Fri, 26 May 2017 15:23:16 -0500

Family graduations two days and five hundred miles apart mean you get a Roadhouse Rewind for show 638. From ten years ago, I hope Roadhouse 118 will keep you entertained until I return next week with another new show.

We return to the freewheelin' feel of The Roadhouse this week, with the Blues Music Awards shows behind us. Dave Hole, Hamilton Loomis, Anson Funderburgh, Roosevelt Sykes, and Saffire - The Uppity Blues Women are just some of the artists you'll love in this edition. It may be a tough genre to pin down, but you're sure to find each and every artist in the 118th Roadhouse Podcast deeply rooted in the blues - the finest blues you've never heard.

Roadhouse 637

Sat, 20 May 2017 16:30:02 -0500

There are two important points to remember for this edition of The Roadhouse: the blues are in good hands and they cover a lot of ground. I feature Big Bill Morganfield, Jimmy & The Sleepers, Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds, Patrick Recob, and John McNamara in a harmonica-heavy hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 637th Roadhouse.(image)

Roadhouse 636

Sat, 13 May 2017 18:22:55 -0500

This hour of The Roadhouse is our annual look back at the Blues Music Awards. The hour is dedicated to the winners in the major categories. Diunna Greenleaf, Doug MacLeod, Kenny Neal, Mavis Staples, and Tedeschi Trucks Band are among the artsts in the spotlight. Even though I know I've had a couple of the tracks in the show, that doesn't prevent it from being another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - our review of the 38th Blues Music Awards in the 636th Roadhouse.(image)

Roadhouse 635

Sat, 06 May 2017 18:45:56 -0500

I've got an 80-proof version of the hour this week, with 40% of the artists new to The Roadhouse. Harlis Sweetwater, Brad Stivers, John McNamara, Hector Anchondo Band, and Selwyn Birchwood fill the hour. This edition has a lot of new stuff wrapped around an old concept - the concept of another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 635th Roadhouse.(image)

Roadhouse 634

Sat, 29 Apr 2017 16:49:15 -0500

It's hard to imagine how so much great music can be packed into an hour. After whittling down the playlist by half, I think I arrived at the quintessential Roadhouse. Kilborn Alley Blues Band, Doug South & The Roundabouts, Gina Sicilia, Robert Cray & Hi Rhythm, and the Johnny Max Band are all out there just waiting to blow you away. Of course, they'll do that with another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 634th Roadhouse.(image)

Roadhouse 633

Sat, 22 Apr 2017 17:21:08 -0500

In this hour, I've got swing blues, traditional contemporary blues, some acoustic blues, a little blues rock, and a couple of great Roadhouse debuts. Lil' Shakey & The Tremors, Todd Albright, Samantha Fish, Mike Zito, and Vintage #18 are all ahead. Whether you've heard these artists or not, they're all focused on one thing - making sure it's another hour of the finest blues you've never heard: the 633rd Roadhouse.(image)

Roadhouse 632

Sat, 08 Apr 2017 20:27:23 -0500

This week we mark the passing of Lonnie Brooks with a family set. I've also got blues from all over the place. I've got Godboogie, Bonnie Bishop, Bo Ramsey, Mr. Sipp, and Stevie Silver in the hour ahead. Toronto, Texas, Iowa, Mississippi, and Boston. Just like the blues, the artists in the hour are from all over. And, they're certainly all over another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 632nd Roadhouse.(image)

Roadhouse 631

Sat, 01 Apr 2017 17:38:25 -0500

Anyone who's ever listened to the blues will tell you that it's not about one thing. This hour helps to prove that with upbeat blues, a set of next generation blues, and a set of protest blues. Gary Clark, Jr., Monster Mike Welch, Corey Dennison Band, Eric Bibb, and Billy Flynn move us through the hour with the big picture of blues and, certainly, another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 631st Roadhouse.(image)

Roadhouse 630

Sat, 25 Mar 2017 17:47:43 -0500

We jump back into the flow that you've come to expect from The Roadhouse after a slight diversion in the last hour. It's almost all contemporary blues, including a set that builds from there into a pretty rip-roaring blues rock track. Southern Avenue, Coco Montoya, Jeff Michaels, Ruthie Foster, and John Németh help make up the hour. There are some folks we haven't heard from for awhile and at least one making his Roadhouse debut. It all makes for an hour of the finest blues you've never heard - another hour of The Roadhouse.(image)

Roadhouse 629

Sat, 18 Mar 2017 18:57:57 -0500

We lost another blues great this week with the passing of James Cotton. This edition of The Roadhouse is a rememberance that keeps the context of his musical impact at the forefront. Of course, his context is unequivically Chicago and the legendary blues scene in that city. So, this hour is centered in Chicago, focused on James Cotton, and surrounded by artists who also helped to contribute in making his time in the blues some of the best. Buddy Guy, Lonnie Brooks, Koko Taylor, Luther Allison, and, of course, James Cotton make for another hour in The Roadhouse of the finest blues - the 629th Roadhouse Podcast.(image)

Roadhouse 628

Sat, 11 Mar 2017 18:59:08 -0600

There's a regional focus in this hour of The Roadhouse, from a part of the US you might not know for its great blues tradition. Lil' Stevie & The Westsiders, Professor Harp, Anthony Geraci & The Boston Blues All-Stars, Sugar Ray & The Bluetones, and Paul Rishell & Annie Raines help fuel an hour of what we'll call New England blues. But, it doesn't really matter what you call it as long as you call it another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 628th Roadhouse.(image)

Roadhouse 627

Sat, 04 Mar 2017 17:36:06 -0600

This hour of The Roadhouse works to rectify an admitted deficit of female blues artists to male. Lauren Mitchell, Hurricane Ruth, Samantha Fish, Rhiannon Giddens, and Southern Avenue take you to a different side of the blues - a side that's a little less male-centric and a little bit more from a woman's perspective. That mix makes for absolutely another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 627th Roadhouse.(image)

Roadhouse 626

Sat, 25 Feb 2017 16:43:48 -0600

It's the twelfth anniversary of The Roadhouse, and I've got an hour full of upbeat show-opening tracks. Little Charlie & The Nightcats, Candye Kane, Victor Wainwright & The Wild Roots, Trudy Lynn, and R.J. Mischo are queued up to help propel us through a birthday hour. Sometimes it seems like thirty, but mostly the twelve years of The Roadhouse have gone by pretty quickly, as will this hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the twelfth anniversary Roadhouse.(image)

Roadhouse 625

Sat, 18 Feb 2017 17:35:56 -0600

As always, I'll try to mix things up a bit in this hour of The Roadhouse. SI've got some urban blues, some country blues, and a set in the second half of what I'll call 'hippie blues.' Colin James, Vasti Jackson, Paul Lamb, John Ginty featuring Aster Pheonyx, and The Rockin' Rebels are all ahead. As always, it's a bit of an eclectic hour of blues and certainly another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 625th Roadhouse Podcast.(image)

Roadhouse 624

Sat, 11 Feb 2017 17:20:35 -0600

It's not all driving backbeats in this hour of The Roadhouse. In fact, I've got a set acoustic blues featuring the National Resonator guitar. And, I'll follow that up with a set of ragtime blues, as well. Big Bill Morganfield, Doug MacLeod, Maria Muldaur, The Ragpicker String Band, and The Bluesmasters are the spine of the hour, if you will. But, as with the human body, it takes ribs and muscles and other bones to make a body full. I've got plenty of other tracks to fill that role and fill out the body of another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 624th Roadhouse.(image)

Roadhouse 623

Sat, 04 Feb 2017 18:20:04 -0600

This hour's all about blues attitude. Ronnie Baker Brooks, Peter Karp, The Lachy Doley Group, King King, and Mighty Lester lay it out. They help assure we just keep rolling with another hour of blues variety as you've come to expect every week. But, really, it's another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 623rd Roadhouse.(image)

Roadhouse 622

Sat, 28 Jan 2017 19:00:43 -0600

There's a lot of good stuff in the hour ahead with Elvin Bishop, Thornetta Davis, Sonny Landreth, Southern Avenue, and Tab Benoit with Jimmy Thackery. But, the centerpiece of the hour is a tribute to Butch Trucks - a single track that I think really exemplifies the propulsive drummer that he was. It also helps to support the case that he was, simply, one of the greatest drummers of all time in one of the greatest bands of all time. While the track I pulled is really more blues rock, it's absolutely surrounded by another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 622nd Roadhouse Podcast.(image)

Roadhouse 621

Sat, 21 Jan 2017 19:11:58 -0600

I think I've got another hour of blues ahead that you'll find to be just solid. Big George Jackson, Thorbjørn Risager & The Black Tornado, Hadden Sayers, Bo Carter, and Ronnie Baker Brooks. The hour includes a trip into the deep blues roots - something I haven't done for awhile. But, overall, it really is something I do every week: give you another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 621st Roadhouse.(image)

Roadhouse 620

Sat, 14 Jan 2017 18:31:13 -0600

Every hour of The Roadhouse is a little bit of a winding road - we tend to swing from one groove to another, usually in the context of a set. This hour will be another of those twisted treks - a little blues rock, some acoustic blues, a couple of live tracks. Quinn Sullivan, The Ragpicker String Band, Craig Erickson, The Jimmys, and Wee Willie Walker lead the way. I think there's bound to be quite a bit in the hour ahead that you like - but I'll admit to my own bias. I am certain, though, that you'll like another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 620th Roadhouse.(image)

Roadhouse 619

Sat, 07 Jan 2017 17:16:57 -0600

If you're an old hand in The Roadhouse, you know the drill, here - an hour of great blues variety. If you're new, I'm glad you stopped by and I think you might be in for a surprise or two. Big Golden Wheeler, Ronnie Baker Brooks, Sharon Lewis, Popa Chubby, and Lucinda Williams are all ahead. I've also got at least three artists making their debut in The Roadhouse. All in all, you know it makes for another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 619th hour of The Roadhouse.(image)

Roadhouse 618

Sat, 31 Dec 2016 15:43:22 -0600

We're building a strong hour of blues in this edition of The Roadhouse. Jack Mack & the Heart Attack Horns, Lucky Peterson, Kenny Neal, Moreland & Arbuckle, and The Mighty Mojo Prophets provide the bricks, with another seven or eight artists providing the mortar. All told, it takes a lot of hands to construct the hour, but when it's done, you end up with another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 618th Roadhouse.(image)

Roadhouse 617

Sat, 24 Dec 2016 14:20:56 -0600

We're down to two Roadhouse hours left in 2016. What's up in the 51st hour of the year? The Rolling Stones, JW-Jones, Michael Burks, David Bromberg Band, and The Blind Boys of Alabama. If it's cold where you live, this one will keep you warm. If it's warm, I think you'll find this to be a very cool hour. In any case, you know it's going to be another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 617th Roadhouse.(image)

Roadhouse 616

Sat, 17 Dec 2016 14:30:12 -0600

Grab a cup of eggnog and make yourself comfortable. I've got the third holiday edition of The Roadhouse for 2016 queued up and ready for your celebration. Jack DeKeyser, Cedell Davis, Jack Mack & The Heart Attack Horns, Wee Willie Walker & The Greaseland All Stars, and Keb' Mo' fill the hour. My guess is that this will be another edition where you just get lost in the music, looking up in surprise when we signal closing time. Regardless, it'll be another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 616th Roadhouse.(image)

Roadhouse 615

Sat, 10 Dec 2016 18:22:58 -0600

The second holiday edition of The Roadhouse for 2016 keeps the spirit rolling. I've also got quite of bit of new music to round out the hour, including Big Bill Morganfield, Mike Zito, Jim Suhler, Annika Chambers, and Doyle Bramhall II. Holiday blues and new releases will help keep us moving along. As always, they also help to make sure we roll another hour of the finest blues you've never heard, the 625th Roadhouse.(image)

Roadhouse 614

Sat, 03 Dec 2016 17:22:45 -0600

It's the first holiday edition of The Roadhouse for 2016. With a holiday track in every set, I've also got Sugar Ray & The Bluetones, The Rolling Stones, Chuck Leavell, Rory Block, and Teresa James & the Rhythm Tramps in an hour that contains a set focused on the great Bukka White and, all around, has a great mix of new music and old. With an ad-free version for everyone, I do believe it'll be another hour of the finest blues you've never heard.(image)

Roadhouse 613

Sat, 26 Nov 2016 09:29:53 -0600

It's a holiday weekend in the US - that means a Roadhouse Rewind. From 2010, I hope you'll enjoy Roadhouse 300. I'll be back next week to start the holiday season in the The Roadhouse.

A big thanks to all who have made the 300th Roadhouse possible – listeners, labels and artists. This milestone edition stretches things out with fewer songs but plus-size creativity. The Chris O’Leary Band, Mel Brown, Lance Lopez, Lucky Peterson, and Buddy Guy provide more than enough propulsion to move through the hour with toes tappin’, hands slappin’, and full-on chair-dancin’. There’s another hour of the finest blues you never heard in the 300th Roadhouse.

Roadhouse 612

Sat, 19 Nov 2016 17:45:50 -0600

I got out the prism, again, in this hour. We go from jump blues to acoustic, some contemporary blues, and a tribute track by Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings. Bobby Rush, Mike Zito, Big Head Blues Club, The Devil Makes Three, and Trudy Lynn. It is a spectrum of blues in this hour and certainly a spectrum of the finest blues you've never heard - the 612th Roadhouse Podcast.(image)

Roadhouse 611

Sat, 12 Nov 2016 17:28:42 -0600

In this hour of The Roadhouse, I've got a set from the Delta, a track that borders on rockabilly and the usual bouquet of brightly-colored blues. Mitch Kashmar, Brian Jack and the Zydeco Gamblers, Mike Zito, Dave Weld, and Monkeyjunk - all fill the bill in the hour - the next hour of the finest blues you've never heard, the 611th Roadhouse Podcast.(image)

Roadhouse 610

Sat, 05 Nov 2016 19:15:13 -0500

This edition of The Roadhouse moves along like a train down the rails. Knickerbocker All-Stars, Frank Bang & The Cook County Kings, Johnny Nicholas, Laith Al-Saadi, and Marcia Ball keep things going, with plenty of momentum to spare. You'll be glad you gpt a ticket, because the the 609th Roadhouse Podcast is another stop in a long line of the finest blues you've never heard.(image)

Roadhouse 609

Sat, 05 Nov 2016 19:17:45 -0500

This edition of The Roadhouse is a pretty diverse hour. I’ve got straight-up blues, a rootsy set, and a set of classic Chess recordings to celebrate Leonard Chess. I’ve also got a couple of interesting bluesy, soulful covers for you. With the Chess set, it’s definitely music you’ve heard, so let’s just say this hour is mostly an hour of the finest blues you’ve never heard – the 609th Roadhouse Podcast.(image)

Roadhouse 608

Sat, 22 Oct 2016 17:27:36 -0500

I've got another broad hour of blues with a pretty big variety of styles. There's some contemporary blues, a little blues rock, an acoustic set, and a set of soul blues that'll definitely have you moving. Gary Hoey, Fiona Boyes, Bobby Rush, Wee Willie Walker, and The David Bromberg Band all help to take us away from the rest of the world for awhile. Let's hope it's a comfortable, if temporary, shelter. Nonetheless, we know it'll be another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 608th Roadhouse.(image)

Roadhouse 607

Sat, 15 Oct 2016 18:26:38 -0500

In this hour of The Roadhouse, I bounce back and forth between two real hot spots of blues: Chicago and San Francisco. I've got a lot of artists that you've heard of, but at least a couple who are new to the show. Frank Bang & The Cook County Kings, Rod Piazza & The Mighty Flyers, Aki Kumar, Cash Box Kings, and Mississippi Heat. They move us between Chicago and the West Coast and help guarantee another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 607th Roadhouse.(image)

Roadhouse 606

Sat, 08 Oct 2016 16:42:12 -0500

This is another hour of The Roadhouse that just doesn't slow down. And, it's a little heavier than usual with some great female blues artists, to boot. Jai Malano, Teresa James & The Rhythm Tramps, JJ Thames, Robert "Lefty Preacher" Sampson, and Aynsley Lister are all ahead in this hour. Amazing female voices in what may be the most upbeat hour of The Roadhouse ever. And, of course, it's also another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 606th Roadhouse.(image)

Sat, 01 Oct 2016 16:53:57 -0500

Over the course of 13 or 14 tracks, this hour of The Roadhouse get focused with a set of blues from the 1970s and another of great soul blues. Dr. John, Son Seals, Bobby Rush, Junior Parker, and Tommy Castro help round out the hour. The hour will absolutely have you moving. It's an hour with a focus an, of course, absolutely another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 605th Roadhouse.

Roadhouse 604

Sat, 24 Sep 2016 08:27:03 -0500

Once again, I've got a pretty big variety of blues, fitting together a bunch of puzzle pieces to shape a coherent picture. Lil' Ed & The Blues Imperials, The Della Grants, Hitman Blues Band, Bruce Katz Band (Featuring Chris Vitarello), and Devon Allman are among the old and new names. It's a variety of blues you may not find anywhere else, but always a variety of the finest blues you've never heard - the 604th Roadhouse.(image)

Roadhouse 603

Sat, 17 Sep 2016 14:47:41 -0500

There's a deeper groove in this hour of The Roadhouse - something musicians call "in the pocket." Big Head Blues Club, Bobby Rush, Robert Cray, Vaneese Thomas, and Jason Elmore & Hoodoo Witch fill the bill. While I usually slam you with up-tempo blues, it's good to have a little change of pace once in awhile. Regardless of the pace, it's an hour of blues with a deep groove and definitely another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 603rd Roadhouse.(image)

Roadhouse 602

Sat, 10 Sep 2016 09:41:20 -0500

While I work my way to Michigan to run a race on September 11, I've got a Roadhouse Rewind in the queue. From ten years ago, Roadhouse 81 is a pretty nostalgic look back. I'll be back next week with a new edition of The Roadhouse.

It's the Labor Day Weekend in the US. In The Roadhouse, we're celebrating the labor of love of some top-notch blues musicians. Lil' Ed and the Blues Imperials, Shemekia Copeland, Sleepy John Estes, The Smokehouse Ramblers, and Larry Garner take the stage for the benefit of your mental health. There's new sawdust on the dance floor and cold beverages for your enjoyment. It's the 81st Roadhouse Podcast - the 81st hour of the finest blues you've never heard.

Sat, 03 Sep 2016 17:11:40 -0500

I'm feeling great about the hour ahead and so will you. I've got a couple keyboard-focused tracks, a bit of harp, some killer guitar, and vocals strong enough to knock you down. Daddy Mack Blues Band, The Juke Joint Rockers with Willie "Big Eyes" Smith, Toronzo Cannon, Little Milton with Gov't Mule, and Annika Chambers lie in wait straight ahead. It's a feel-great hour, and another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 601st Roadhouse Podcast.(image)

Sat, 27 Aug 2016 18:12:20 -0500

There's blues enough to get you going in this edition of The Roadhouse. I've got The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Sammy Kershaw, Luther Dickinson, The Record Company, and Laith Al-Saadi. That's just the start - there are plenty of other great blues tracks to propel us through the hour. And, it's another hour, I might add, of the finest blues you've never heard - the 600th Roadhouse Podcast.(image)

Roadhouse 599

Sat, 20 Aug 2016 18:00:49 -0500

The story of this edition of The Roadhouse is that I'm going to fulfill my favorite plan as your host in our little dive to make the hour as upbeat as possible. This one should fulfill your weekly cardio requirements. Corey Dennison Band, Vaneese Thomas, Eugene "Hideaway" Bridges, Andra Faye & Scott Ballantine, and Hard Swimmin' Fish. They fill the hour along with eight or nine other tracks that will keep you moving, and keep you believing that you've absolutely found another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 599th Roadhouse.(image)

Roadhouse 598

Sat, 13 Aug 2016 19:34:03 -0500

It's tough to classify the variety of blues in this hour of The Roadhouse, so I'll just stay out of the way of putting your own frame around it. Alabama Mike, Terrie Odabi, Rose City Kings, Dave Muskett, and Ann Rabson - if you're familiar with those artists, that tells you everything you need to know about the mix of blues in this hour. One thing is certin about that mix, though. It's definitely a mix to comprise another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 598th Roadhouse.(image)

Roadhouse 597

Sat, 06 Aug 2016 18:55:51 -0500

The single word to describe this hour of The Roadhouse is "debut." I've got five artists in the hour who are making their Roadhouse debuts. And, it was extremely difficult to pull together the playlist because there were multiple tracks from those debut artists that I'd loved to have dropped in the show. Colin James, Rose City Kings, John Blues Boyd, The Jackson Whites, and the Jeremiah Johnson Band help fill the hour. Let's welcome the new artists to The Roadhouse, knowing they'll provide big contributions to another hour of the finest blues you've never heard.(image)

Sat, 30 Jul 2016 13:39:14 -0500

It's an unexpected Rewind from The Roadhouse Studios this week. I'll be back next week with a new edition of The Roadhouse.

This edition of The Roadhouse will have you out of your chair from start to finish. Barrelhouse Chuck & Kim Wilson’s All-Stars, Johnny Copeland, Mark Hummel, Moreland & Arbuckle, and Honey Island Swamp Band tear up the hour in a show that will pass far too quickly. It’s the 440th hour of The Roadhouse and another hour of the finest blues you’ve never heard.

Roadhouse 595

Sat, 23 Jul 2016 20:31:54 -0500

What lies ahead in this hour of The Roadhouse? I've got a couple of sets of classic blues artists - one that nearly spans the country from west to east, and one that's dedicated to some of the great female voices in the blues. The Rides, Jimmy Rogers, Big Maybelle, Big Mama Thornton, and Charley Crocker. We're about to go for a ride across geography and time. And, since you've probably heard some of the classic tracks that lie ahead, I'll just say that ride fills up another hour of the finest blues - the 595th Roadhouse.(image)

Roadhouse 594

Sat, 16 Jul 2016 18:19:15 -0500

I've got a full hour ahead, with a next generation set and a set of gospel blues centered around The Staples. It's all mixed in with a bigger variety of blues. Jeremiah Johnson Band, Gary Clark, Jr, Jarekus Singleton, Mavis Staples, and The Nick Schnebelen Band all contribute to what I think will be another fun hour of blues variety, and certainly another fun hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 594th Roadhouse.(image)

Roadhouse 593

Sat, 09 Jul 2016 18:13:05 -0500

In this hour, I've got lots of horns, lots of walking bass and probably a little more harp than usual. If the music's not rollin', it's tumblin'. Mitch Woods, Kilborn Alley, Anthony Geraci & The Boston Blues All-Stars, Roomful of Blues, and Terry Hanck - all just a slice of the craziness ahead. If this hour doesn't have you moving, you probably need to call 911 because this hour of The Roadhouse is all upbeat and every bit another hour of the finest blues you've never heard.(image)

Roadhouse 592

The bandstand's set, the lights are dimmed, the sawdust is on the dance floor, and we're ready to take you away from the cares of the world for awhile. It's gonna take some help to do that. Fortunately, Lucky Peterson, Mike Eldred Trio, Jim Suhler & Monkeybeat, Katy Guillen & The Girls, and Laura Rain & The Caesars are ready to lead the charge of escape. And, they also provide us with great mile markers along the road away from troubles and into another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 592nd Roadhouse.(image)

Roadhouse 591

Sat, 25 Jun 2016 20:12:29 -0500

As always, a big hour ahead in this edition of The Roadhouse. It'll probably get your heart rate going a bit as it's pretty much all upbeat, uptempo, outstanding blues. Sammy Eubanks, The Kentucky Headhunters, Mark May & The Soul Satyr Horns, Alabama 3, and Big Pete get the headliner slots, but the other tracks and other acts are no less killer. Let's just call it cardio blues in this, another hour of the finest blues you've never hear - the 591st Roadhouse.(image)

Roadhouse 590

Sat, 18 Jun 2016 17:14:16 -0500

This hour of The Roadhouse has a long set of live music and another trip in the Wayback Machine of blues history. Rivherside, Jim Suhler & Monkey Beat, The Nick Schnebelen Band, The Rev. Gary Davis, and Michael "Iron Man" Burks. It is an hour of thoroughly enjoyable blues and definitely another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 590th Roadhouse.(image)

Sat, 11 Jun 2016 14:23:41 -0500

We're spanning the globe in this edition of The Roadhouse, with blues from Texas, Louisiana, England, Romania, Serbia, and more. Greg Izor & The Box Kickers, Markey Blue, Mick Taylor, AG Weinberger, and Ana Popovic take center stage. But, it doesn't really matter where the music's from. You know, regardless of origin, it'll be another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 589th Roadhouse.(image)

Roadhouse 588

Sat, 04 Jun 2016 18:10:04 -0500

In this hour of The Roadhouse, I've got some blues that have crossed over from country, a band that was in some of the very early editions of The Roadhouse, and an artist who first came to fame on the classic Stax label. Along the way, I've got Mac Arnold & Plate Full O' Blues, Big Pete, Shawn Murphy, Albert Castiglia, and Eric Lindell, as well. I'm just tryin' to live up to the promise - the promise of another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 588th Roadhouse.(image)

Contemporary blues, classic blues, the next generation - this hour's got it all. But, that's what we do in The Roadhouse, right? Mix it all up and keep you anticipating the next track. Eddie Clearwater, Leadbelly, Rhiannon Giddens, Lake Street Dive, and Honey Island Swamp Band - that's a variety of blues. It's a variety that will keep you guessing and, of course, it's also a variety of the finest blues you've never heard - the 587th Roadhouse.(image)

This hour of The Roadhouse pays tribute to the late Candye Kane with a track in every segment. But there's also a bunch of other great blues, including Muddy Waters, Chase Walker Band, Sugar Blue, Mark Hummel, and Johnny Rawls. We say goodbye to a friend but know that the blues rolls on yet more of the finest blues you've never heard - the 586th Roadhouse.(image)

Roadhouse 585

Sat, 14 May 2016 17:54:40 -0500

This edition of The Roadhouse comprises sets of varied themes - a set of contemporary blues, a set of blues rock, some killer soul blues, and a set that leans more toward the acoustic. Tweed Funk, The Kaz Hawkins Band, Moreland & Arbuckle, The James Hunter Six, and Matt Andersen make up the big pieces of the puzzle, but the small pieces really pull it all together. It's an hour of varied themes in this edition of The Roadhouse, and definitely another hour of the finest blues you've never heard.(image)

As has become the tradition in the past few years, this edition of The Roadhouse is focused on the 2016 Blues Music Awards, held this past week in Memphis. I've got the winners in 16 or 17 categories, including Cedric Burnside Project, Bettye LaVette, Walter Trout, Shemekia Copeland, and Doug MacLeod. It's a parade of winners this week and a strong, strong hour of the finest blues.(image)

Sat, 30 Apr 2016 18:11:24 -0500

After a few weeks away, it's good to be back to The Roadhouse Studios. Though I struggled a bit to put this one together, I think you'll find the outcome to be worth the struggle. Albert Castiglia, Big Jon Atkinson & Bob Corritore, Dave Muskett, Roddie Romero & The Hub City All-Stars, and Shaun Murphy are all part of the hour. With an edition almost completely full of new music, I think it's safe to say you're in for another hour of the finest blues you've never heard.(image)

Roadhouse 582

Sat, 23 Apr 2016 15:07:23 -0500

This week, it's the second of two Roadhouse Rewinds while I work my way home from vacation. I'll be back next week with a new edition of The Roadhouse.

The dark little dive we call The Roadhouse is home this week to the broadest range of blues you might find anywhere. Smokey Wilson, Frank Goldwasser, Snooky Pryor, Anders Osborne, and Bluesmasters featuring Mickey Thomas mix it up with various takes on the blues. The spotlight is on the multeity of the blues in the 270th Roadhouse, and it's definitely another hour of the finest blues you've never heard.

Roadhouse 581

Sat, 16 Apr 2016 08:04:19 -0500

Roadhoue 581 is a Roadhouse Rewind this week, as I'm in New England for a few weeks. Enjoy Roadhouse 321 from April 16, 2011.

This edition of The Roadhouse proves the statement we've been making for six years of Saturdays - that the blues isn't just about the old guy on his porch, an acoustic guitar in his lap. Blues can be upbeat, too. The Chris O'Leary Band, Kelley Hunt, Hamilton Loomis, Janiva Magness, and The Juke Joints set the tone for a chair-dancin' hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 321st Raodhouse.

Roadhouse 580

Sat, 09 Apr 2016 10:13:10 -0500

I've got a feel for some West Coast blues. Of course, that West Coast sound is really almost a migratory blues sound - moving from Texas to the coast. So, there's some Texas in this edition, too. Kirk Fletcher, Johnny Nicholas, Floyd Dixon, Nappy Brown, and The Mannish Boys all make for an hour of uncontrollable chair-dancing and what's clearly a solid hour of the finest blues you've never heard.(image)

Roadhouse 579

Sat, 02 Apr 2016 17:29:21 -0500

Let's call this edition of The Roadhouse tough as chrome with a little more blues rock than usual and a couple of extended tracks from some Roadhouse favorites. Guy King, Joe Bonamassa, Joanne Shaw Taylor, Gary Clark, Jr, and Peter Karp featuring Mick Taylor - all are driving the hour. Even the slower tracks have a toughness to them. But tough or tender, fast or slow, you know the 579th Roadhouse will be another hour of the finest blues you've never heard.(image)

Roadhouse 578

Sat, 26 Mar 2016 13:41:12 -0500

As we move into the spring new release cycle, I've got five artists in this edition making their debut in The Roadhouse. Evelyn Rubio with The Calvin Owens Blues Orchestra, Too Slim & The Taildraggers, Jeff Healey, Mavis Staples, and Sugar Pie DeSanto propel us along for the hour. New music, new artists and a new season out my window. Couldn't ask for a better set of conditions to put together another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 578th Roadhouse.(image)

Roadhouse 577

Sat, 19 Mar 2016 18:01:20 -0500

The 577th Roadhouse has a lot of potential: to get your toes tapping, to hear some great blues that you might not have known about otherwise, and potential for some chair-dancing. Johnny Rawls, Steve Earle & The Dukes, Luther Dickinson, Guy King, Tasha Taylor - almost every track in the hour is new within the past 2 or 3 months or still to be released. In other words, there's also the potential here for an hour that really just flies by and, of course, to be another hour of the finest blues you've never heard.(image)

Roadhouse 576

In this edition of The Roadhouse, we pack up an move to Chicago for an hour of contemporary blues from the Windy City. Magic Slim, Billy Boy Arnold, James Cotton, Hound Dog Taylor, and Byther Smith set the stage for an hour of blues as distinctive as any other feature of the city. From the home of the blues, the 576th Roadhouse is another hour of the finest blues.(image)

Roadhouse 575

Sat, 05 Mar 2016 17:43:14 -0600

It's a twisty path through this hour with a mixture of styles and sounds. As always, I've got quite a bit of new music and, for those who love acoustic blues, a full set that just showcases how broad interpretations of the blues can be. Benny Turner, Tommy Emmanuel, Tedeschi Trucks Band, The Knickerbocker All-Stars, and the Corey Dennison Band. It's hour of surprises and definitely another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 575th Roadhouse.(image)

With a full set of Roadhouse debuts, this edition is packed full of new releases. And, I've got an unreleased single from one of the more highly-anticipated upcoming releases of this young year. The Record Company, Blind Boys of Alabama, Keb' Mo', Toronzo Cannon, and Golden State Lone Star Blues Review. Those are just the waypoints for the hour, but they all resolve to another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 574th Roadhouse.(image)

Take a good breath before this edition of The Roadhouse - you'll need all the oxygen you can get. For the 11th anniversay edition of the show, I've got an hour of show-openers from the previous year. Mississippi Heat, Dave Alvin & Phil Alvin, Andy Santana & The West Coast Playboys, Kentucky Headhunters with Johnnie Johnson, and Bill Perry make for the most upbeat edition of the past 12 months. It's the 573rd Roadhouse and the 11th anniversary of the finest blues you've never heard.(image)

Pre-release music and classic blues artists help support this hour. Eugene Hideaway Bridges, Toronzo Cannon, Luther Dickinson, Magic Sam, and Mavis Staples drive this edition, along with many other great blues artists and tracks. This edition of The Roadhouse is focused on the 2016 Blues Music Awards. I'm featuring nominees in almost all the major categories to put together a compelling hour of blues. Diunna Greenleaf, James Harman, Sugar Ray & The Bluetones, The Ragicker String Band, and Mr. Sipp provide a representative slice of the nominees and, certainly provide another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 571st Roadhouse.(image)

Roadhouse 570

Sat, 30 Jan 2016 18:58:29 -0600

You're probably gonna want to man up for this edition of The Roadhouse. It's full of tough subjects: the news, drinking, guns, the economy, danger. But the artists walk the line that blues walks so well - tough, yet still providing the motivation to spend an hour chair-dancing. Harmonica Shah, Zora Young, Luther Allison, Koko Taylor, and Sugaray Rayford. Let's just call this an hour of flinty blues and another hour of the finest blues you've never heard.(image)

Roadhouse 569

Sat, 23 Jan 2016 17:13:02 -0600

I've got several pretty strong harp tracks in this edition of The Roadhouse, but, of course, that's not all. I've also got a live set and a blues rock set in the hour and several outstanding blues women, as well. Francine Reed, Pinetop Perkins and Jimmy Reed, Smokin' Joe Kubek and BNois King, Balkun Brothers, and Ina Forsman mean I'm pretty sure you'll find it to be an hour of surprises and, certainly, another hour of the finest blues you've never heard, the 569th Roadhouse.(image)

It's a full hour in this edition of The Roadhouse with about as many tracks as you can pack in and still leave a little time for talk. Included in that big stack of blues: Jonn Del Toro Richardson, Sam Butler, Candye Kane, Billy Boy Arnold, and Trudy Lynn. Any good real-world Roadhouse packs 'em in on Saturday night and I think we've got it covered both ways. We're packed full of patrons and packed full of artists in another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 568th Roadhouse.(image)

Roadhouse 567

Sat, 09 Jan 2016 19:13:56 -0600

If you've never really thought about the diversity of styles we call the blues, you're about to get a big, big surprise. This hour of The Roadhouse ventures off into contemporary, acoustic, retro, soul blues, and blues with a Hawaiian twist. Bob Margolin, Jeffrey Foucault, Doug MacLeod, Mike Sanchez, and Taj Mahal assure that if you get nothing more out of this edition of The Roadhouse, you'll get the true sense that the blues is not just one thing. But this hour? It is one thing. It's an hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 567th Roadhouse.(image)

With the first show of the new year, I take a look back at the old, with an hour of some of my favorite releases from 2015. Buddy Guy, Cash Box Kings, Knickerbocker All-Stars, Sonny Landreth, and Slam Allen are just some of the names that represent the finest and freshest blues from 2015. And they lay the foundation for another hour of the finest blues of the year just passed - the 566th Roadhouse.(image)

Roadhouse 565

Sat, 26 Dec 2015 10:39:38 -0600

Technical difficulties this week mean that the last show of 2015 is a Roadhouse Rewind. Replacement gear is on the way, and I should be back next week to kick off 2016 with a new edition of The Roadhouse.

This edition of The Roadhouse ends the year with a real party atmosphere. Freddie King, Buddy Guy, Johnny “Guitar” Watson, Mighty Sam McClain, and the South Austin Moonlighters light up our little juke joint. Throw in a couple of listener requests and the last 60 minutes of 2012 is absolutely an hour of the finest blues you’ve never heard.

It's a great day to get the '57 Cadillac convertible of the blues out of the garage and rolling down the road. Chris O'Leary, Buddy Guy, Laura Rain & The Caesars, Georgie Bonds, and Altered Five Blues Band keep us moving, feathering the gas pedal just enough to keep that momentum going. Like the 558 editions before it, this edition of The Roadhouse really promises to make for another hour of the finest blues you've never heard.(image)

The tinkle of glasses on the bar, the low hum of quiet conversation, and a lot of laughter provide the clue that you've come to the right place for great blues. And on our dark little bandstand: The Knickerbocker All-Stars, Norton Buffalo & Roy Rogers, Thørbjorn Risager & The Black Tornado, Helge Tallqvist, and Bobby Rush. So, we'll just call it another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 558th Roadhouse.(image)
