At the company’s Skunk Works research center, scientists have been working on compact nuclear fusion reactors so small they can fit on the back of a truck, yet one single reactor could provide enough electrical power for 100,000 persons per reactor. Mimicking the sort of fusion reactions which power the Earth’s Sun where hydrogen atoms are superheated and transformed into helium, where massive amounts of energy are produced, compact nuclear fusion provides safe energy production without all of the major drawbacks of nuclear fission reactors. Sadly, nuclear fission reactors gave nuclear reactors a bad name for the attempted efficient and cost effective production of safe energy, by producing waste materials that presented major disposal problems or some nations might spin into nuclear weapons. Fission works by splitting atoms, while fusion works by using high electrical currents to heat atoms to force atoms to fuse together. Fusion creates three to four times more energy than fission, but a sustained operation of a fusion reactor may have heat increase up to a million degrees within the reactor, or temperatures that can easily melt not only all known metals but also rock into lava as well. Cheap electric power can power pumps to bring water to areas where little water now exists. Developing nations can have safe reactors with no chance of nuclear waste presenting disposal problems or being spun into nuclear weapon materials. For the developing world, cheap electric power can benefit economic development and give households more free income to spend to boost the consumer economy. Aircraft and ships can be built with unlimited ranges to travel without having to refuel. The environment will become cleaner and clearer as burning coal to produce electricity can end. In the shorter run, plug-in hybrid automobiles can replace dirty burning gasoline engines, later replaced by all electric, and, maybe eventually automobiles of unlimited range that do not need to refuel, that have their small compact nuclear fusion reactor powering the automobile. Edison’s lightbulb was once a true advance. But, from the inspiration of Earth’s Sun comes the promise of a cleaner environment, cheaper energy and a better future to all people of the world. Alkaline batteries have far different characteristics than your dry cell batteries, where a chemical reaction takes place discharging a current until not enough current can be produced as the chemicals become equalized in the unit. Compared to the older style and lower cost technology dry cells, these different characteristics make recharging alkaline batteries more difficult, but not impossible. The problem is that alkaline cells differ so much from dry cells in structure that they cannot be recharged in series in a normal battery recharger. But, here’s the secret battery manufacturers will not tell you how to recharge and reuse alkaline batteries several times. Place one alkaline in a normal household battery charger, then place a dry cell battery next to the alkaline, then put in another dry cell, then one more alkaline, so that one dry cell will act as a capacitor for an alkaline battery, taking part of the load off the alkaline battery that is under electrical load during the recharging process. Normally, alkaline cells will quickly get hot and overheat, but not with using dry cells as capacitors to take enough load off to allow recharging to take place. Some stores only sell alkaline batteries these days, but fortunately some stores such as Dollar Tree stock both dry cell as well as alkaline batteries, and for only one dollar for as many as eight batteries! So, get in the habit of buying a mix of dry cells and alkaline batteries, putting a 50-50 mix in the recharger each time you want to recharge the batteries and get 8 or more uses out of each battery before it becomes weak and depleted for use.

In 1964, Farnsworth and his partner Hirsch built their nuclear fusor, and hobbyists quickly became impressed how simple and easy it is to build a nuclear fusion unit at home. One of the easiest to fuse isotopes is the long isotope deuterium from hydrogen because a relatively low voltage is required to heat the ions enough to fuse and create helium. Television electronics loaned a great deal to the development of early nuclear fusion research and experiments because devices based off television receiving tubes. Early fusors were little more than TV tube adapted units where there was particle acceleration injected into the vacuum. With voltage applied to create heated particles, ions are forced together at the center of the fusor, fusing together. The main elements to create a nuclear fusor are a vacuum chamber of some type, but the better radiation shielding, the better to protect against X-radiation and gamma rays. Some sort of vacuum pump and vacuum gauges are required to purge the chamber of all oxygen and all but only trace atoms in the vacuum. An electrode in the center with high voltage applied from a neon tube ballast transformer or even a high voltage flyback transformer from an older tube styled TV set apply over 12,000 volts of DC current required to create enough heat from this high voltage source to fuse ions together as they are heated and forced together at the center of the electrode sphere. For safety reasons, the fusor should not be run but for very short periods, and at higher voltages, producing more lethal current, perhaps a viewing camera and television would be better suited to view the core reactions of the nuclear fusor. And, of course, a geiger counter would be a wise investment to understand how much radiation is being created through the nuclear fusion process. The Internet contains a few amateur nuclear experimenters blogs and Websites, where some hobbyists show off their latest nuclear fusion experiments. When you see the blue glow of fusion at the core of the high voltage electrode ball, knowing that ions are being heated and this is creating particle acceleration with fusing in the center of the vacuum chamber, you know that your efforts have been rewarded and you have joined the nuclear fusion club. Despite spending $1 billion in production costs to convert the Alfa Romeo Giuletta 940 into the very nice quality Dodge Dart, which has gained high safety and other ratings, the car is being discontinued after just three model years because of weak sales, where Jeep Wrangler production will take over the assembly plant. A new version of the Dodge Neon, which is imported from Turkey and Mexico based on the Fiat Tipo will replace the Dart which ceases production in September. After this model year, both the $87,000 V10 powered Dodge Viper and the Chrysler 200 will be discontinued, with Fiat- Chrysler’s main passenger car fleet consisting of the Dodge Challenger, Dodge Charger, Chrysler 300 and Fiat 500 representing much of their passenger car offerings. One advantage of the Fiat Tipo sold as the new Neon is that it includes both sedan as well as crossover models, giving Fiat-Chrysler another new truck model to market compared to the sedan based Dart models. While vans may not be everyone’s idea of a first choice in transportation, Chrysler has established a solid reputation for quality vans over many years, and has been rewarded with strong sales in that market for dependable and quality vans. With excellent visibility and the ability to carry a lot of cargo or passengers, van sales have been strong enough for Fiat-Chrysler to use comic Jim Gaffigan in an ongoing series of TV ads to promote vans built by the company. As an industry whole, truck sales are the largest portion of the new vehicle market, but for Chrysler, their truck, crossover vehicle and van sales far outdistance their lagging passenger car sales, where the company is apparently responding with less new passenger car offerings in the near future and more Fiat-based imports, as customers more and more look to purchase a new truck of some sort from the company as their 1st choice. While the trend appears to be a Clinton lead at this time, some sampling errors in 2012 should serve as a lesson for the polling industry. In 2012, compared to the average of polls and the actual results on election day, an under-representation of minority and ethnic voters accounted for a 3.3% difference in favor of President Obama over challenger Mitt Romney. While the Romney Campaign felt a sense of confidence, the polls they chose to embrace under-represented minority and ethnic voters even more so than the average of polls that had President Obama narrowly ahead with about a 0.7% polling advantage. But, some trends do remain clear here. Ethnic and minority voters do vote in higher numbers than the polls ever seem to count and that Donald Trump is also polling far worse than Mitt Romney did among both ethnic and minority voter groups. As one example, Mitt Romney was able to capture 30% of Jewish voters in 2012, while Clinton is so far polling a much stronger 69% to 19% margin with Gary Johnson factored in. Further, Trump is also likely to do less well among Muslim voters, Hispanic voters, African American voters as well as Asian voters than Romney did in 2012, in addition to their numbers being under-represented in the polls as well. It also must be remembered that both Gary Johnson and Jill Stein ran as independent candidates in 2012, where Johnson only polled just 0.99% of the vote, and not the 10% he appears to be polling at now. Equally, Stein’s 4% she’s pulling in current polls are also 10 times the numbers she actually earned in 2012, so expect these high numbers to fall, and supporters to fall back to mostly support of the major party candidates. With Donald Trump unlikely to match the 2012 numbers that Mitt Romney was able to pull in 2012, plus the numbers of ethnic and minority voters being under-represented in the current polls, the actual current Clinton lead may be as great as a staggering 16% advantage in favor of Clinton. A margin anywhere near these numbers would like pull a lot of states along with it, and an electoral college landslide. But, there’s important electoral tactical mistakes that both campaigns may be making. While the Clinton Campaign as well as her independent support campaigns are spending around $90 million a month on advertising, the official Trump Campaign has yet to run their campaign ads with the pro-gun NRA and other groups running ads in support of Trump. In addition, the Trump Campaign is wasting time and money with campaign events in some states in which he probably has little to no chance of winning in November. And, in a sign of over-confidence, the Clinton Campaign has suspended advertising in Colorado and Virginia, which some polls have suggested could be close toss-up states. But, both campaigns do agree the industrial Midwest states will decide this election, where both will expend their efforts there. But, in these states, blocks of African American voters and others could be the winning margins in close states like Ohio, where Clinton could have an advantage with strong targeted get out the vote efforts. While the Democratic Party has made a real science of get out the vote efforts, with workers in other states who study registration, etc., the often disorganized seeming Trump Campaign may be at another disadvantage here, but having to rely on many motivated voters to vote instead. Helium, that strange lighter than air gas used in party balloons may be completely depleted from the Earth within 20 years. But, far from party balloon use, helium is critical in medical use in MRI units, which account for about a quarter of the gases use, in addition to NASA rockets, LCD display screen manufacturing as well as some welding applications. Helium is found as about 0.03% of natural gas, and in a few other places. In 1996, at the request of President Clinton who was attempting to cut federal spending, congress responded with legislation to privatize helium, and remove it from federal management which started a few years after WWI when helium was used in military balloons and blimps.

With the U.S. supply of helium rapidly being depleted, Russia and China both have some supply, where it can be collected from natural gas or some select rock formations. Earth’s Sun contains the most known reserves of helium, but it cannot be collected for obvious reasons while the Earth’s supply runs lower and lower.

How the world can deal without the gas with supercooling properties in manufacturing or MRI operation is a good question. Perhaps, by time the gas nears total depletion some synthetic gas substitute might be able to be produced for medical or other use. (image)
