Hey, what what about US? If you stop finding all the newsbites and reading between the lines for us, who's going to? I sure don't have that kind of time.

Ask not what the blogosphere can do for you, but what you can do for the blogosphere.

Really, though, it's a labor of love. You're right, you probably won't get anything meaningful out of it except small-time notoriety/fame. And the warm feeling of knowing you added some value to the world, and maybe enlightened a few people. Which is nice.

And if you ever wanted to get a job as a reporter, I'm sure this wouldn't hurt on your resume. Might do nothing, but wouldn't hurt.

I met someone once who, after talking for a while, figured out that I was the writer of my blog. And I have far fewer readers than your blog. That was pretty cool. It's never happened again.

Years ago I was mugged at New Hampshire and V, NW. The desk clerk in the condo building on the corner would not call the police. He mentioned something about his brothers and the crimes inflicted upon them. I then walked to the police station (before mobile phones) and reported the crime. The police were polite, but what could they do. Three African American men in the their 20's with dark clothes on, etc. I know the city has far more serious crimes.

I packed my bags for Arlington and never looked back. I'm in the city at least once a week these days -- sometimes two to three times a week. I'm careful where I go, where I park, and I survey my environment. Overall, I love the city. I grew up here and DC will always possess magic for me, and it's only ten minutes away.

I don't like the current GOP administration in VA, and hope they'll lose in the next election. With all that said, I breath easier when I cross the Potomac. Arlington isn't perfect, but the crime rates drops tremendously and I don't worry about the huge corruption issues that plague DC -- 50M property tax theft; emergency medical incompetence, iffy police force, council member Barry steering contracts to his girlfriend/cronies; lead in the water, etc.

And posts like this remind me that I'm very happy to be outside of DC.

I just want to be able to add value online and have it automatically recharge whenever it drops below a certain value.

Even my Starbucks card can do that, so why can't WMATA do it?!

I don't mind paying if necessary, but the extra penny should go to the correct the AWFUL!!!! school system in the District. How can you line the pockets of the already rich business owners without making EACH location that's benefiting from the increase contribute at least half in scholarship to their area schools. This is totally unfair. Pay me for each time I don't use a plastic bag!

They doubled the number of HD channels! And by "doubled," I mean they gave me two of them--two ESPNHDs, two Food Network HDs, two TBS HDs... The list goes on. Am I the only one that doesn't exactly think that counts?

2010-03-08T15:05:04.889-05:00

I have to wonder if it partially comes from the other end too - there are no lower offices to "train" aspiring politicians. It used to be that everyone who wanted to be on the Council ran for school board, but now that's gone.

2010-03-08T13:34:09.117-05:00

There's an awful lot of research out there dealing with surveys of local politicians and their motivations - typically they're folks that are inspired to work for their community, and typically have less interest in going on to higher levels of government.

That said, DC is a bigger city - really big cities may offer the prospect of higher office to a former mayor or councilman, but I don't really think its fair to compare DC to New York, Chicago, Houston or LA.

I think there might be a hint of truth to what you're saying, but I think it has more to do with the fact that the District just hasn't managed to produce much of anyone of real notability in a loooong time. Partly because the schools here suck. In terms of politicians, there's a nasty culture of cronyism that's gonna take a lot of effort and significant amount of time to unwind. I sometimes wonder if we might not be better off with a weak mayor/strong council/city manager approach...

2010-03-08T12:26:19.870-05:00

I think it's because the cream of the crop who come to this city as transients aspire to work for the federal government, not small-time city government where things like online degrees are considered the norm.

2010-03-08T09:30:57.717-05:00

You make an interesting point. But at the same time, how does greater political aspiration motivate people in the first place? What, in the end, are the goals of running for public office? How many people who were once city mayors go on to become senators or state representatives?

In an ideal world, the goal would be to improve the city/state/country in which you live.

In reality, within DC and without, the goal of most public offices at the level of mayor or above seems to be enriching yourself and your friends. Sure, as a senator in a whole state you would have a bigger pot of money available to do that with. But in DC, because there's no scrutiny from the nonexistent state legislature, and the federal government doesn't really care that much as long as their trash gets picked up, it's actually a great place to be corrupt and get away with it easily.

So while I think your point is valid in some ways, it assumes that "greater political aspiration to do more good" is a primary motivating factor for people who might be mayor of DC or any city. I think that's not necessarily true - in actuality a lot of people who run for these office see it as an opportunity to get rich and make your friends rich, as well as riding the adrenaline rush that comes with power.

Umm, DC sucks. Maybe that has something to do with it?

Let me phrase it another way: The DC government is a farce, and everyone knows it. That is why only clowns run for office in DC.

There, that wasn't so hard, was it?

absolutely! you make an astute point that the best that a lot of elected officials can aspire to is using the political office to further their business career. while many members of the national house and senate clearly have the same aspirations, the fact that it's really the only one for DC pols just feels sleazier.

2010-03-04T15:31:28.502-05:00

Ridership, overtime, has increased more than fares have (I believe, I'll look for numbers). Yes, labor costs have increased too, but gas prices are in flux over far more complicated factors that supply and demand. What I'm getting at is that people are very quick to complain about how a $0.10 fare hike isn't accompanied by a huge improvement in service... but prices rise at the grocery store, at the gas station, in rents, without any sort of improvement. When everything becomes more expensive we can't expect transit (even if managed better) to remain the same price forever.

2010-03-04T15:25:53.709-05:00

I have a problem with: "When the price of gas goes up, we generally don't whine that the gas isn't better quality."

The price of gas is based primarily on supply and demand, and can go up or down. When it goes up, it generally means that there was more demand than supply at the previous price level. As with Metro, the fare hikes are strictly arbitrary and are implemented on a regular basis to continually cover inefficiencies and waste in contracting and salaries/pensions.

Metro is doomed. Sarles has done nothing but run NJ Transit into the ground during his tenure. Trains are slower and more unreliable than ever, thanks to service and maintenance cuts. Nearly everyone agrees that new tunnels to NYC are needed, but new tunnels to a six track stub terminal deep under 34th St and not physically connected to Penn Station are good for nothing but lining the pockets of contractors. Good luck!
