tchotchkes to watch out for

Fri, 22 Dec 2017 10:05:21 -0800

Looking for stocking stuffer ideas for hipster queer women. **Ignore this thread if you are a hipster queer woman who is related to me.** The HQW in question 1) like tabletop gaming 2) video games 3) comics 4) cooking 5) dogs 6) nerd stuff.

Would prefer to shop local (of course). Location: Chicago, specifically Andersonville (of course). The Women and Children First staff is getting sick of my face.

Thanks in advance for your ideas!

the dearly deleted

Wed, 29 Nov 2017 21:04:21 -0800

Is there a normal process/timeframe for removing the deceased from your phone contacts list? I'm at the point where I have a handful of names in my phone contacts list for friends and family members who have passed, and I'm trying to figure out what to do about that. Feels weird to delete them, and weird to have them keep popping up as autofill suggestions. I realize the decision really is a personal choice – but is there any sort of established norm?

manifest density

Thu, 16 Nov 2017 13:27:13 -0800

Last weekend, I made Metafilter's favorite Mark Bittman no-knead bread and it turned out delicious, but a little denser than optimal. I've identified a few possible issues – can some of the master bakers out there weigh in? Possible issue #1 - wrong flour? I used Gold Medal unbleached all-purpose
Possible issue #2 - not enough yeast? I added ingredients according to weight
Possible issue #3 - not enough time? I gave it 18+ hours as per directions
Possible issue #4 - it's supposed to be dense, deal with it .

Thanks in advance.

NEWHART FOR DUMMIES

Sat, 14 Oct 2017 10:22:50 -0800

Next weekend, I'm visiting Vermont for the first time ever. I'll be flying into Manchester, NH, on Thursday, renting a car, and driving around solo for four days. My itinerary is open ended -- I just want to get a feel for the state, hopefully catch the leaves before they go brown, visit some small towns, and stuff myself with tasty food. The rough plan right now is to drive up to Montpelier and use that as a base to explore. Vermonters and those who know the lay of the land, do you have any tips for me? Any small towns I should visit or festivals I should be aware of? I happen to be a gay dude, so if there are any awesome gay bars, I'd love to know about them too. Bonus question 1: I'm considering driving up to Montreal for a night. Doable?

Bonus question 2: How awful will driving be without an E-Z Pass? (This concern is inspired by this previous Ask.)

birthdays, the universe, and everything

Wed, 07 Sep 2016 14:07:14 -0800

What are some Douglas Adams-inspired destinations for a 42nd birthday? (Due to budget constraints, travel is limited to Earth, otherwise I'd be downing Pan Galactic Gargle Blasters on Eroticon VI.) For example: a home being demolished for a highway seems a little grim, but perhaps there's a particularly interesting towel factory out there? No need to limit yourself to Hitchhiker's – I am strongly considering locations from Last Chance to See, and am also thinking about significant places from DA's life. But let's keep ideas a little more specific than "England."

Thanks, hoopy froods.

up in the ear

Wed, 04 May 2016 12:15:46 -0800

How do I know when it's safe to fly after having an ear infection? Monday morning, I visited my doctor for an earache. He prescribed amoxicillin and medicated ear drops, and gave me the go-ahead to fly that night. I canceled that flight just to be careful.

Two days later, my ear still feels clogged. I have a trip scheduled 24 hours from now that I would prefer not to delay. Is there any way for me to gauge if my ear has healed enough to fly tomorrow?

switching from Final Cut Pro to iMovie mid-project

Wed, 17 Feb 2016 15:33:25 -0800

I have slightly less than two weeks to edit a video project. Due to unforeseen circumstances, I'm going to start editing on a MacBook with Final Cut Pro (in Location A) and then have to finish on an iMac with iMovie (in Location B). My Final Cut Pro clips should import to iMovie without any loss of quality, right? I assume yes, but I just need to double check so I'm not pulling my hair out in a week.

hosting a video with minimal interference

Thu, 04 Feb 2016 09:07:51 -0800

After asking this question, I am now wrangling helpful strangers into lip-syncing to a song, and I need somewhere to host our video that won't slap an ad on top of it, or worse, block it for copyright violations. Details inside. So, I've purchased birthdaymessageURL.com, and I'd like to use Squarespace (or another service) to build a simple website to host a video. That video will include a pop song we don't have the rights to. Squarespace suggests hosting video on Youtube and Vimeo, but I don't want to use a site that will have a problem with the pop song. I realize that YouTube will let me run the video with a banner ad, but I'd prefer to avoid that too. What are my options here? I am willing to spend money, but would prefer to keep it under $150.

We're not trying to go viral with this. The video will probably get a few dozen views at best.

surprise.mov

An amazing human being I've known since high school has a milestone birthday in a month. I'm considering secretly asking a bunch of her friends to record super-short videos, and then compiling those into a birthday greeting. Seems pretty straightforward. So what's the huge looming problem that I'm not considering? Most of our mutual friends are from high school, and I can reach them via Facebook. She's got some very close grad school friends whom I don't know, but I do have a point person I can get email addresses from. The messages will be super short — maybe I'll even just ask everyone to say one word that they'd use to describe the birthday person. I think there will be like 50 people in all I'll reach out to. And like I said above, I've got a month to get it done.

I have video editing experience and a good Mac, so I'm not worried about the tech side of things. My one big fear is that this turns into a clusterfuck and I don't get enough response to warrant putting together the video.

If you've ever produced a video like this, what was your experience like? Any lessons/warnings for me?

And if you've been the recipient of a video like this, how was it for you? Was there anything that could have been handled better?

the bear accessories

Sat, 24 Oct 2015 21:28:05 -0800

My Halloween costume is this awesome bear hood, which I would like to make more awesome with a little customization. Suggestions welcome. Ideally, I'd make his eyes glow, but I'm not sure where to start with that. So what are other fun ways I could give Mr. Bear more personality? Please note that whatever I do must be able to survive a four hour flight in my carry-on luggage, so it can't be too fragile or bulky.

Other than that: this is freeform, go nuts.
