Finding balance...

Help for addicts

2013-04-27T08:36:56.310+08:00

I'm glad that nobody in my family has ever been admitted to an alcohol addiction rehab program, or at least none that I know of. This is not to say that members of my family have totally sworn off alcohol. These are mostly celebration drinks for our family, to be enjoyed by sipping, not by gulping or emptying one full bottle of alcohol after another. Which is wise, I

Happy Chinese New Year 2013

2013-02-10T15:03:21.359+08:00

Photo credit:  author's own Happy Chinese New Year!  May good fortune smile upon you and your family! CNY eve saw us welcoming the year of snake with fanfare.  However, not all is well.  Still thankful for all the blessings we received in the turbulent year of the dragon that was and looking forward to the year of the snake. Will be posting details of our New Year's celebration soon.

Corned beef from scratch

2013-02-01T09:50:26.528+08:00

My husband and I both love corned beef -- the canned ones.  His fave is Libby's and mine is Deli Mondo. On our family's New Year's Eve dinner, there was a large block of corned beef roasted and served by that dinner's hired caterer.  It was, in my opinion, better than even my favorite canned variety. After that I decided to try to make my own corned beef.  I am concerned about the

Has it been that long already?

2013-01-04T01:06:33.231+08:00

It's been so long since I've last posted! So many things have happened in our lives and I have never been busier. Work has now taken a huge chunk of time for both me and the hubby. Also we've finally made the decision to move out from my mom's place and live on our own. My son is now a grade schooler and my daughter's at the end of her toddlerhood. All these have

Play Pilipinas starts today!

2011-10-21T03:46:52.420+08:00

Being the mother of 2 spirited children is something, that while enjoy, is also tiring for me most of the time. Blame it on the fact that this working mom is already in my forties. I simply cannot match the energy of the youngsters. That's why I do not know how a mother of eight, like Sigrid Sabarre Perez manages to do it. But I do agree with her that we cannot and should not stop children

40plus

2011-07-15T02:48:37.653+08:00

I've neglected this blog for so long that I'm pleasantly surprised to see that people still follow me. Well, I'm back. I hope I can regularly update as I used to do. I'm already on my 4th decade of life. I still have 2 young children who I gave birth to in the ages considered to be high risk. I'd love to have another baby, but the fear of having problems due to my advanced maternal age and

Car accident

2011-03-09T02:41:20.231+08:00

It was only lately (well, less than a year ago) that I finally got to use the comprehensive car insurance that I have been paying for the past few years. Some people may think it's an expense, but, really, if you know what to do, it will save you a lot of money and a lot of stress if you find yourself in an accident. The TPL (third party liability) covers only physical injuries up to a certain

What's happening with the working mom?

2011-03-09T02:21:42.510+08:00

I got busier! I now got more clinics, 2 kids, one hubby and I have to bring to and from school, more blogs (check the sidebar for the latest posts!), and pending assignments for my Master's class! I also still have my online store. I am hoping to come up with another blog. Good luck to me if I can still manage it!

How not to promote a website or blog

2011-01-20T16:09:30.429+08:00

I got this from one of the comments up for moderation in my family blog: *The next time I read a blog, I hope that it doesnt disappoint me as much as this one. I mean, I know it was my choice to read, but I actually thought youd have something interesting to say. All I hear is a bunch of whining about something that you could fix if you werent too busy looking for attention. Here's the actual

Investing while working

2010-11-29T12:38:51.834+08:00

Sometimes I feel so depressed about HAVING to work. But with a family to support, there is really no way around it. We really need to have money in order to pay for the basic needs of our family as well as self imposed essentials like a good education and good health care. That's why we occasionally also put some bets on the lotto, because we might just get lucky enough to be the recipient of

And the tutoring for long exams start...

2010-12-01T07:37:20.312+08:00

My son is going to have his first long exam this coming Tuesday, November 30.  This is the first time for him to have an exam that encompasses the lessons for a whole trimester.  He used to just have short quizzes.  There's a first time for everything.  For my husband and I, this would be the first time for us to do marathon tutoring sessions. I hope my little boy will be able to make it.

A Christmas quiz

2010-12-01T07:40:17.247+08:00

I took this quiz for fun, since December is just around the corner. I have to say that I didn't really do very well, just 5 out of 10 correct answers.  (Although the official results say that I know a lot...but diba passing is 75% :P).  I wish though, that they posted about the correct answers!  I do not know which of the answers I put in are the RIGHT ones! You Know a Lot About Christmas

Lotto!

2010-11-29T15:57:10.441+08:00

This morning, I bet on the lotto. I don't usually put bets, but then the pot money is a whopping 690plus pesos, so I thought, maybe I'd be lucky. Of course I was not lucky enough to get the windfall. Nobody won. So, the pot would even be bigger. What would I do if I were the lucky winner of such a huge amount of money? First of all, I'd keep quiet about it. I won't tell other people. I'd

Our laptop is back!

2010-11-04T07:39:24.066+08:00

It's difficult to work if you don't have a regular computer. That's what happened to me. My hard drive crashed and for some reason, my laptop just wouldn't work. We thought that it was just the hard drive since my laptop is about 4 years old already and our hard drive is rather limited by now. I mean, 1tb hard drives were not exactly around during the time we bought this. But even when we

Taking charge of my retirement

2010-08-30T11:33:50.102+08:00

That is really, really sad. A disgruntled police officer holding tourists hostage and eventually killing 8 of them. The reason: his being dismissed from service and not being eligible for his retirement benefits. He was demanding to be reinstated and his benefits assured.I am no employee, neither a government or private one and certainly no police officer. I cannot relate to retirement

Holiday confusion

2010-08-30T11:20:19.923+08:00

My son's school calendar states that September 9 is a holiday. However, I have yet to hear the official announcement from Malacanang. While this may not seem like such a big deal, to me it is. We have a team building activity on the eighth and ninth of September, and it's supposed to be an overnight thingy. I do not know if we can bring the kids (I hope so). And even if we can't, there's the

Gold

2010-08-29T11:26:39.407+08:00

My family has great belief in the intrinsic value of gold. In accordance with Chinese custom, my father's family gave my mother gold jewelry during their engagement ceremony. My mother's family, in turn gave my father a gold watch.Tradition aside, gold is really a good investment. It's a finite material, but it does not easily break down or lose its value. There is no special care needed to

Pagbabago

2010-08-29T09:22:37.265+08:00

It was barely a month after my wedding when the news came.My uncle and his family were enjoying their Christmas vacation in Thailand when the deadly tsunami struck. This disaster claimed the lives of hundreds of thousands of lives, including those of my uncle and my 2 young cousins (they were only aged 44, 13 and 10 at the time) plus 2 other members of their party. My brother went to Phuket to

2010-07-27T09:20:45.855+08:00

One!

2010-06-19T06:16:26.767+08:00

My little girl just turned one yesterday! We had a very simple celebration at home. I had Manang Conching cook traditional Chinese birthday misua. I also ordered some food from Mr. Sun Moon and a cake for Conti's for dinner. We sang the birthday song and her Kuya E "helped" in blowing out her first birthday candle. My mother gave her an "ang pao" (red envelope with money inside). There were no

My little boy goes to big school

2010-06-19T06:48:19.262+08:00

Today is E's first day in La Salle Greenhills. It's not his first school. He used to attend preschool at ICBB. But big school's a totally different story. My husband and I both took leaves from our clinics so that we could accompany him to school. He told us that he enjoyed school. We are glad. (Big sigh of relief here). Hoping that he'll continue to enjoy school. The biggest drawback is the

Geminis all

2010-06-19T06:54:04.434+08:00

There are so many birthdays this month for my side of the family. There's my grandma, my daughter, my uncle, my niece, my cousin-in-law and me.June this year is especially significant (and busy) since there are 3 milestone birthdays -- two first birthdays and a 90th birthday! Happy birthday to all of us!

I like this type of house

2010-06-19T06:22:16.365+08:00

You Should Live in a Rustic HouseYou are a traditional person with old fashioned values. And you're only looking to impress yourself. You think it's important to have as comfortable a home as possible. You want to feel cozy. You are in touch with nature, and you appreciate a beautiful view. You appreciate the simple, basic things in life. You can be happy just from seeing it snow. What Kind of Home

Certainty in uncertain times

2010-05-06T10:50:16.874+08:00

People are really getting jittery nowadays, what with the looming elections. What will the future hold for this country? One thing is for sure: we do need to secure OUR OWN future. We can't always pin our hopes for a better government who will give us MORE, because it's pretty difficult to say who will win or what will happen when the new president takes up his duties. My brother is very serious

How should I deal with stress?

2010-05-06T10:53:39.738+08:00

You Should Play Some MusicPart of what's stressing you out is that you can't stop thinking about your problems. Whenever you try to relax, you can't stop your mind from racing. The best thing you can do is crowd out your thoughts. And there's no easier way to do this than by cranking some music.Dancing is optional but highly recommended. Give yourself a break from your stress and really let
