The mha file extension is related to MetaImage format, a special medicine image format used in the Insight Segmentation and Registration Toolkit and probably other graphic visualization software used in medicine.

This code reads MRI brain scans (.mha file) on matlab with a very clear GUI that can show all the 3D scans in very good way. this is needed in many projects that deal with MRI scans and needs to read it well.

The code is implemented in a GUI (user friendly) to facilitate using the program with a 3D model for the brain for best visibility.

The code runs very fast. The bi-directional soft output Viterbi algorithm (SOVA) is implemented very efficiently, that is, with just two non-nested for loops. Probably, the fastest SOVA you could find on the MATLAB file exchange. The convolutional encoder is also implemented efficiently using the long division method.

Automatic pattern recognition of Head-And-Shoulder


Implementation for Head-And-Shoulder (Lo et al., 2000, Journal of Finance) with simulated data

This prototype shows a reduced approach, how to implement an automated pattern recognition algorithm for the Head-And-Shoulders pattern (Lo et al., 2000, Journal of Finance) in MATLAB.
Lo et al. (2000) use a moving window consisting of 38 price observations. With every step, the oldest price will be deleted and a new price appended to the price queue. A kernel regression smooths the raw prices (observations 4.-38.) in order to filter noise. The pattern recognition algorithm identifies a specific visual pattern, which is described by the position of the last five local extrema (called E1, ..., E5) in the smoothed prices. For example, the arrangement E1 < E3 > E5 and (E2, E4) < (E1, E3, E5) constitutes a Head-And-Shoulder TOP pattern, if the 4. price is a local extrema. The remaining newer prices (3. – 1.) protect again look-ahead bias. A TOP pattern implies a decreasing price and BOTTOM pattern vice versa. A timer generates 80 random prices. The command-line and a figure present the output.

Stigmergic Perceptron


A perceptron-ispired soft classifier of time series based on stigmergic similarity.

A Stigmergic Perceptron (SP) is a soft classifier of a time series with respect to a collection of archetypal time series, each representing different behavioral classes. The SP takes as an input a time series and provides as an output the linear combination of similarity values of the time series w.r.t. the most similar archetypal time series. Indeed the SP is organized, like a neural perceptron, in terms of linear combination of values provided by Stigmergic Receptive Fields (SRF). SRF can be combined and arranged into multilayer architectures thanks to specific input/output interfaces, namely clumping and activation. Each SRF provides a similarity measure between the input and the archetype time series. The term stigmergic refers to the internal logic of a SRF, inspired by stigmergy, an insects' coordination mechanism. Stigmergy is based on the spatio-temporal aggregation of input samples by functional structures called trails. Trails are generated by marks released by each sample in the input dimension, and evaporated over time. At the core of a SRF, the similarity between the trails of two time series is calculated. SP and the related SRFs are parametrically adapted to a given training set by means of the Differential Evolution (DE) algorithm.
