MelloTrello 1.1 – Label Text & Responsive

Fri, 17 Mar 2017 02:30:20 +0000

I’ve updated MelloTrello, my Trello theme, to show label text and to make it responsive. The text on the labels makes it easy to remember what the labels mean. That is, if you associate text with the labels. Boards also now stack if the window is too narrow. This makes Trello responsive and you don’t have...

Clean up the multiple drafts that Apple’s Mail app creates in Gmail.

Sat, 11 Mar 2017 02:56:51 +0000

If you use Apple’s Mail with Gmail, you realize that every time Mail autosaves a draft, Gmail creates a new draft. Even after the message has been sent, Gmail thinks you have lots of drafts. I haven’t found a good way to stop this but I have found an easy way to clean it up....

Weather Underground’s unfortunate graphic mishap.

Thu, 09 Mar 2017 03:45:47 +0000

Weather Underground is terminating their weather text alerts and sent out a nice email letting people know. The email included this graphic. Unfortunately, the cactuses in the picture look a bit more like the sun is giving me the middle finger. Especially the one on the right. I’m sure they didn’t intend for this to...

Automatically customize the WordPress login screen with the logo uploaded to Beaver Builder.

Mon, 06 Mar 2017 02:16:11 +0000

In my ongoing Beaver Builder tips posts, here’s one to easily brand the WordPress login screen with the logo uploaded to Beaver Builder. Just drop the code into the functions.php file. It should be as simple as that. If there is a retina logo, it’ll use that one, if not, it’ll use the normal one....

I think I found an alien race just waiting to hatch @freshthymefm

Mon, 27 Feb 2017 03:44:36 +0000

We were at Fresh Thyme over the weekend and we came across what appears to be a nest of alien eggs just waiting to hatch. The good news is that I didn’t see any aliens, the bad news is people were taking them home! We’re all doomed.

Beaver Builder – Add search to mobile.

Wed, 22 Feb 2017 16:42:28 +0000

I’m a fan of Beaver Builder, but no search on mobile? What’s up with that?! We can easily add it back, though. You just have to add a function to your functions.php file and you’ll get a search box under the header. This uses WordPress’ wp_is_mobile function to determine if we’re on mobile or not....

Sat, 18 Feb 2017 18:41:18 +0000

Beaver Builder is a great way to create quickly generate a WordPress site, however, it does have some quirks. One of which is no indication that menus have children. However, that’s a quick fix with a few lines off CSS. Check out the before and after: This code is setup to just effect the main...

How to fix anchor links when you have a fixed header.

Fri, 17 Feb 2017 17:56:49 +0000

Anchor links are a convenient way to send people directly to the content they’re looking for. However, if you have a fixed header, things quickly become a problem as the content is now hidden behind the sticky header. If you’re writing your own code, you can easily use CSS to get around this. Check out...

Grammarly is an excellent free tool to help you write better.

Mon, 06 Feb 2017 04:21:04 +0000

Have you heard of Grammarly? Grammarly is a free (and paid) service that checks your writing for spelling and grammar mistakes. The best part is, it really works! I know the first thing a lot of people are going to say is that their operating system has spelling and grammar check too. It’s true, they...

Automatically add fieldset tags to Gravity forms and increase accessibility.

Tue, 31 Jan 2017 14:29:01 +0000

Gravity Forms is great, but lacks some basic accessibility. Good thing it’s extendable. Grab the  WCAG 2.0 form fields for Gravity Forms plugin and it’ll automatically add fieldset tags to your questions with radio buttons, checkboxes, or multiple inputs. Not sure why Gravity Forms doesn’t do this by default, but very happy to have a plugin...

Lighting up the night with USB rechargeable led motion sensor lights.

Tue, 24 Jan 2017 13:49:17 +0000

I’ve recently become a big fan of rechargeable led motion sensor lights. I’ve got one at one end of the living room and it lights up the room enough for me not to run into something. I’ve got two on our stairs going to the basement and one on the stairs going upstairs. All I...

Epic Ice Cream from MilkCow

Thu, 19 Jan 2017 06:59:17 +0000

Found a great ice cream place in Fremont California called MilkCow. I got the Santorini which is soft serve organic ice cream, tropical blue syrup, Oreo crumbles, nuts, and one big piece of cotton candy. I’m not sure if the cotton candy is organic or not, but it was delicious. It tasted way better than fair...

How to mass remove URLs from Google quickly.

Sat, 07 Jan 2017 03:12:41 +0000

Google indexes everything it finds and sometimes it finds things that it shouldn’t. Google has a nice removal tool that temporarily removes URLs from Google and this is actually really good when you want something out rather quickly. In my experiences, it remove pages from Google Search within 24 hours. The downside to Google’s removal tool is...

Got Creative Over The Holidays

Mon, 26 Dec 2016 03:12:09 +0000

I always have good intentions to do something creative, but this year I actually got a few projects done. One is a reversible scarecrow snowman that I my wife saw on Pinterest. It’s about three feet tall and has weathered the weather pretty well so far as it sits outside our front door. The clothes pins...

Reddit Secret Santa Was Awesome

Wed, 21 Dec 2016 03:48:58 +0000

This year I participated in my first Reddit Secret Santa gift exchange. I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect out of it, but thought it was worth a try. Turns out, it was great. Now I didn’t get Bill Gates as my secret Santa, but the person who got me made me very happy. They got me...
