Fri, 03 Aug 2007 01:48:00 +0000Los Angeles Angels Gary Matthews Jr. (24) looks for a ball hit for a double by Seattle Mariners Raul Ibanez during third inning action at Safeco Field in Seattle, on Wednesday, August 01, 2007. Seattle Post-Intelligencer Photo by Mike UrbanWhen I initially shot this photo I never even saw the sun streaming through the tiny doorway in Safeco's 300 level. When I swing my 400mm lens to the outfield for a catch I am pretty much focused on just two things: focus and the white dot. The white dot is the ball hovering just above the fielders glove. Only after editing the images did I find the great play of shadow and light. The stadium was much like a giant Camera Obscura with the doorway acting as a pinhole. The image cast on the wall is, of course, an upside down and backwards projection of the sun itself. I bet if you looked closely you could see projections of sunspots in the light image. Just lucky to have a player run through that cool light!

Tue, 17 Jul 2007 09:10:00 +0000I was driving around looking for weather features. That means trying to find a photo that either shows how hot it is, how people keep cool, or anything related to the fact that it was on its way to 95 degrees in Seattle.

Tue, 03 Jul 2007 04:10:00 +0000I was asked to photograph people waiting in line for the iPhone to go on sale June 29 at University Village. As a gadget geek, it was exciting to live vicariously through the folks waiting for their chance to drop a bundle on this beautiful new device. I'm wondering how long it will take before we're using something akin to the iPhone in place of a laptop.

Fri, 29 Jun 2007 09:27:00 +0000I was excited to get the opportunity to photograph Greg Mahony, an outgoing Mercer Island High School senior who will try out for the under-19 U.S. Lacrosse team. I thought I'd share the technique used to create this portrait of the state's best senior player.

The organization of our civilization is apparent in the lines and orderly rows made by structures and our modes of transportation. Here are some photos from a small helicopter that show the graphic nature of man-made Seattle.
