Novel Pursuits: 50,000 words in 30 days

50,000 words in 30 days? That's roughly 200 pages in one month's time. 1,667 words a day, nonstop, without breaks, without remorse, without excuses. John Ryan is among several Seattle area writers participating in a national competition to do just that fo

Day 30: 55,164 and The End

Thu, 30 Nov 2006 16:18:00 +0000

Ladies and gentlemen, by the time you read this, November will be all gone, and with it another NaNoWriMo. The final total you see above. I broke the 50K barrier; I limped by the personal old record by a couple dozen words; and I have on my laptop the bare bones of a novel.

Stay on target, stay on target.

Day 28: 52,320

Tue, 28 Nov 2006 15:29:00 +0000

Well, I dunno about you, but I stayed home today. While I thought working from home would be ideal (comfy sweats, diet Pepsi chilled in the fridge, no co-workers in the bathroom), it meant that I severely misjudged how alien it would be to replicate my office on my couch. The virtual office is an exercise in putting twice as much effort to do the same amount of work. Nothing feels right, nothing feels fast. Even deleting email when tethered to your conjured workstation slows down until you feel numb with delay, as if you are sending in a remote controlled robot to make a sandwich. It'd be better if you were at the counter with the turkey and the mayo, working your own mojo instead of doing it through a surrogate.

Day 27: 51,715

A bit slower, but I'm just moving along with the book. Life is a little easier when I have don't have to make that push to 50K. Ironically, I'm coming up with more work on the plot than before. So, there's that.

Interlude: Some very short stories

Mon, 27 Nov 2006 03:01:00 +0000

From the good folks at Wired, it's short stories, and we are talking incredibly short. Six words. Yup. That's right. Six words. Some contributing authors you might recognize, especially if you are a sci-fi reader.

A little slice of Agent Y

Wed, 15 Nov 2006 04:41:00 +0000

As promised, here's the Wednesday excerpt. It's a bit rough, but it's the thought that counts, right? By the way, when Y whispers to me, it's Kate Beckinsale.
