NFL : Did Colin Kaepernick Cook His Own Goose?

Wed, 22 Mar 2017 15:00:10 +0000

NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick will once again stand for the playing of the National Anthem. That is what ESPN reported on 03/03/17. However, the excuse given for Kaepernick’s change of behavior is something out of a political playbook. “Kaepernick no longer wants his method of protest to detract from the positive change he believes has been created, sources told ESPN.” Yeah, right. We are supposed to believe that Kaepernick’s current status as an unemployed free agent has nothing to do with him ending his protest. Did Kaepernick cook his own goose last season by refusing to stand for the National(image)

A Case of Extraordinary Sportsmanship

Tue, 21 Mar 2017 15:00:00 +0000

Can athletes go above and beyond the call of duty when it comes to good sportsmanship? If I saw correctly on 03/19/17, then the answer to the question is “Yes”. Last Sunday, the University of Kentucky women’s basketball team played against Ohio State in Round 2 of the 2017 March Madness. This game was particularly meaningful to UK point guard Makayla Epps, who has been one of the biggest stars of women’s collegiate basketball during the last 4 years. Here is an excerpt from a story by the Louisville Courier-Journal: “Makayla Epps couldn’t stand to sit in the final seconds(image)

How To Be A Loser By Betting On A Winner

Sat, 18 Mar 2017 15:00:45 +0000

Imagine that you bet that a certain team will win a certain game. Imagine that the team wins that game. Imagine that you lost money on that bet anyway. That scenario came true for some bettors who made bets on the 2017 March Madness men’s game between Michigan and Oklahoma State. Here is an excerpt from a USA Today story about what happened: “Those of you watching the end of a nail-biter between Michigan and Oklahoma State saw Cowboys guard Jawun Evans nail a three at the buzzer to cut a four-point Wolverines win to just a one-point 92-91 victory.(image)

The Future of Nuclear Power

Fri, 17 Mar 2017 19:00:22 +0000

The production of nuclear power can be safe. The U.S. Navy demonstrates that fact 24/7. However, the fact that it can be safe doesn’t mean that the American public will welcome an increase of its commercial use. NPR station WCAI recently put out a story about the future of nuclear power. The story includes statements by David Lochbaum, director of the Nuclear Safety Program at the Union of Concerned Scientists. He gives reasons for lack of enthusiasm for nuclear energy. “We’re seeing more power plants being shut down due to unfavorable economics than we’re seeing being built, and the ones(image)

ESPN Drops Commentator for Using the Word ‘Guerrilla’

Fri, 17 Mar 2017 17:56:32 +0000

From ESPN.com: A tennis commentator dropped by ESPN for a remark about Venus Williams during the Australian Open sued the sports network Tuesday for wrongful termination. Former tennis pro Doug Adler maintains he was describing Williams’ aggressive style last month as “guerrilla” tactics and not comparing her with a “gorilla.” He apologized for his poor word choice but was let go from ESPN mid-tournament. Adler claims “emotional distress” in the filing in Los Angeles Superior Court, alleging he was wrongly branded a racist and has lost other TV opportunities because of the controversy. The lawsuit calls for punitive financial damages,(image)

America’s Fossil Fuel Feast

Thu, 16 Mar 2017 15:00:02 +0000

Currently, America is experiencing a fossil fuel feast. Not only is American coal mining experiencing a revival, but also, the petroleum industry just got a boost from a new oil find in Alaska. “Spanish oil company Repsol SA said on Thursday that it had discovered a giant oil field in Alaska, a potential find big enough to help stem production declines in the state. Repsol said two wells drilled this winter with Denver-based partner Armstrong Oil & Gas, Inc. indicate that recent discoveries in an area that lies between existing operations in the state’s North Slope could hold as(image)

Rachel Maddow’s Belly-Flop

Wed, 15 Mar 2017 17:45:34 +0000

From Slate.com: Rachel Maddow Turned a Scoop on Donald Trump’s Taxes Into a Cynical, Self-Defeating Spectacle At 7:36 p.m. Tuesday, Rachel Maddow tweeted, “BREAKING: We’ve got Trump tax returns. Tonight, 9pm ET. MSNBC. (Seriously),” sending the internet into a frenzy of theorizing. Did Maddow have Donald Trump’s tax returns or just one of the Trumps’ tax returns? Could this be it, the tax return that would bring down the Donald? If this was it, why wasn’t MSNBC cutting into its programming, instead of running a countdown clock to Maddow’s show? By 8:24, Maddow was tweeting that the tax return in(image)

EPA’s Scott Pruitt Flubs Answer To Carbon Dioxide Question

Wed, 15 Mar 2017 15:00:01 +0000

During an interview on CNBC’s Squawk Box, EPA administrator Scott Pruitt was asked a specific question about carbon dioxide. “Do you believe that it’s been proven that CO2 is the primary control knob for climate?” The beginning of Pruitt’s answer was correct: “No, I think that measuring with precision human activity on the climate is something very challenging to do, and there’s tremendous disagreement about the degree of impact.” Indeed, climate scientists have not been able to say just how much climate change is due to human activity. Indeed, there is plenty of disagreement among climate scientists as to the(image)

From KTLA5: Some 1.2 billion barrels of oil have been discovered in Alaska, marking the biggest onshore discovery in the U.S. in three decades. he massive find of conventional oil on state land could bring relief to budget pains in Alaska brought on by slumping production in the state and the crash in oil prices.
