A Warning About Cheap USB Chargers in Cars

Sat, 24 Jun 2017 18:42:00 GMT

There are a lot of deals on USB chargers under $3, but beware those chargers could cause harm to your expensive phones, tablets, and cables.
(image)
We recently used a cheap vehicle charger, which provided a single USB charging output from a car's charging port. The power output may not have been regulated properly, since the cable quickly overheated and set off a burning odor.
(image)
We also tried a cheap USB charger that blew the fuse in the car, causing the dashboard lights to stop working until the fuse was reset.
(image)
Over time, faulty chargers can also destroy the connectors inside the charging port on your phone.
(image)
If you are considering a USB or phone charger for your car, we strongly recommend products that have a lot of positive reviews. People love to complain, so any product that ships just a few faulty units will generate a lot of bad reviews.
(image)
Examples of some deals with positive reviews:
  • Dual USB Vehicle Charging Port for $5 with free shipping from Verizon Wireless. Most reviews are positive.
  • Anker Dual USB Vehicle Charging Port for $10. Thousands of positive reviews.
  • FM Transmitter and Dual USB Charging Port for $18 from Amazon. We like ours, and hundreds of other buyers posted positive reviews on Amazon. Not only does it charge 2 phones at once, but can stream audio from a phone's Bluetooth (wireless) through your vehicle stereo system. It broadcasts your phone's sound through FM radio, so you can play music, Youtube videos, or audio books through your phone, and the sound can be controlled through your vehicle stereo like any radio station. We have not yet tried its built-in MicroSD port, but it can play up to a 32GB MicroSD card full of MP3 files. The microphone did not work for us, so making phone calls through this device may not work for people.

BestBuy.com - Sandisk 256GB USB Flash Drive $42

Fri, 23 Jun 2017 20:00:00 GMT

Sandisk Cruzer Glide 256GB USB Flash Drive for $42 with free shipping.
(image)
If you are a Costco member, you can save $2 at Costco.com.
(image)
256GB is massive storage for a small portable flash drive, but this particular flash drives performs very slow. It can take several minutes or hours to copy files to and from this little drive. Audio and video files should work fine since they stream slowly while playing, but photos and saved documents will have a noticeable lag.
(image)
So,
  • This drive is good for: Backups, and bringing photos, videos, and music files with you on a trip.
  • Not recommended for: Everyday use, since it runs so slow.
Reviewers on Amazon.com, on BestBuy.com, and on Costco.com confirm the slow speeds.
(image)
How slow? If the drive performs at 4-5 MBytes per second (as some reviewers have seen), it can take:
  • 1-2 seconds to copy a 5 MB photo or audio file.
  • 20-25 seconds to copy a 100 MB document.
  • 3.5 to 4 minutes to copy a 1 GB movie file.
  • 14 hours to backup 256 GB
If you want a faster drive, many 128GB "USB 3.0" flash drives can be found for about $33, such as this one and this one.

Fri, 23 Jun 2017 18:22:00 GMT

(expired)
(image)
Schlage FE595 CAM 619 ACC Camelot Door Lock with Keypad Entry. Depending on the color you choose, the price ranges from $70 for Satin Nickel, to $93 for Antique Pewter.
(image)
Normally over $100. This door lock has mostly positive reviews.
(image)
Some door locks have larger keypads, remote locking/unlocking, and other features. However, be sure to read the reviews of electric door locks before buying one.
(image)
Some electric door locks have poor reliability and security. The moving parts can break unless the mechanisms are built well. Some can be easy for thieves to break with a paper clip, as shown in this video of a Yale lock.
(image)
The Schlage does have mostly positive reviews, and until other more sophisticated electric door locks come into the mainstream, the Schlage brand seems to be one of the best today.

Amazon.com - Steam Link for $15

Thu, 22 Jun 2017 18:05:00 GMT

Steam Link takes your computer's video and streams it to a TV in your home. So, it can turn your PC into a game console system.
  • Connect the Steam Link to your home network and your TV.
  • Use your own keyboard, mouse, and wireless gamepad. Compatible with a Playstation 4 wireless controller and other game controllers.
  • Uses your PC's powerful processor and graphics card.
  • Plays games purchased through Steam, where games are often a lot cheaper than Playstation and Xbox games.
Steam Link normally sells for $50.
(image)
Also available directly through Steam's website for the same price. If you need a controller, Steam is bundling a Steam Controller with Steam Link for $45.
(image)
The Steam Link has:
  • Ethernet port, used to get your get the video and audio from your PC over the local network.
  • 3 USB ports, for connecting a keyboard, a mouse, and controllers.
  • Bluetooth, for connecting wireless controllers.
  • HDMI output. Connect to your TV for video and sound, or through an A/V Receiver's HDMI "pass through" to get 5.1 surround sound with your video.
The reviews are mostly positive, with some people saying the audio or video needs to be reset after constant game playing. While it comes with this annoying flaw, $15 still seems like a great value if you already invested a lot of money into a 3D graphics card in your PC and would like to play a game on your TV.

Southwest frequently has airfare sales between select cities, but this one is getting a lot of attention because almost every route has a lot of seats available at the discounted price.
(image)
The sale prices are for travel August through mid-December.
(image)
Our recommendation is to use the Southwest Low Fare Search page to view entire month's prices at once. This can help you find the best deals.
(image)
Southwest prices include 2 checked-bags and carry-on luggage per passenger. Most other airlines, such as Delta, United, and American charge for checked baggage. Some super low-budget airlines, like Frontier and Spirit, charge hefty fees for carry-on luggage. So, Southwest's total airfare cost may be better even if other airlines have a lower initial cost.
(image)
Also, Southwest flights can be cancelled for any reason, at least 24 hours prior to the departure time. Returned tickets are given as dollar credit, applicable toward future travel within 1 year from the date you purchased them. This can give you some flexibility if your plans change or are uncertain.

Say you want to visit grandmom in Florida but not sure if you can go in September or October, buy both trips at the sale price today, then cancel the one you decide not to use at least 24 hours prior to its departure time. Set your calendar to remind you to cancel one of your trips. The credit can apply toward future Southwest travel, as long as it happens within 1 year from the date you originally purchased the travel.

BestBuy.com - Sandisk 256GB USB Flash Drive $42

Mon, 5 Jun 2017 17:00:00 GMT

Sandisk Cruzer Glide 256GB USB Flash Drive for $42 with free shipping.
(image)
If you are a Costco member, you can save $2 by buying it from Costco.com.
(image)
256GB is massive storage for a small portable flash drive, but this one will perform slow. That means it can take several minutes or hours to copy files to and from this little drive. So, this drive will work fine with video and audio files since they stream slowly, but photos and saved documents will perform slowly since they must be read in their entirety to view them.
(image)
Reviewers on Amazon.com, on BestBuy.com, and on Costco.com confirm the slow speeds.
(image)
How slow? If the drive performs at 5 MBytes per second (as some reviewers have seen), it can take:
  • 1-2 seconds to copy 5 MB
  • 20 seconds to copy 100 MB
  • 3.5 minutes to copy 1 GB
  • 14 hours to copy 256 GB
This drive can be good for backups and for bringing a lot of files with you on trips, without filling up precious space on your laptop's disk. However, if you have little patience and prefer files to copy much faster, consider a 128GB USB3.0 flash drive which are often found for about $40.

Newegg.com - Hard Drive Docking Station for $15

Mon, 5 Jun 2017 16:28:00 GMT

(image)
Hard drives are cheap storage, and you can plug them in to the dock whenever you need them. For example, Best Buy is selling a Western Digital 2TB Hard Drive today for $60.

Walmart.com - RCA 50-inch 4K TV for $265

Mon, 5 Jun 2017 16:05:00 GMT

RCA 50-inch LED-backlit LCD 4K 2160p HDTV for $264.15 today. Free delivery or free in-store pickup. Paying under $300 for a 4K 50-inch TV is rare.
(image)
According to the reviews on Walmart.com and Amazon, the TV is a good value for a cheap screen. People say the picture quality is very good, but RCA has poor customer service and some cable/satellite universal remote controls will not control this TV's power and volume.
(image)
This deal is a little risky since it may not work with your universal remote, and RCA's customer service will be poor. Walmart does charge $26 for a 3-year "protection" plan which covers replacement if the TV were to break, but does not help any remote control issues.
