October Airfare Sale

Thu, 22 Sep 2016 05:00:00 GMT

With no major holidays and kids/students a few weeks into the school year, October is the least traveled month of the year. Therefore, October is usually the cheapest month to travel. Airlines often have a lot of seats available at low prices from now through November 6.
(image)
Right now, every airline should offer cheap flights when booked at least 2 weeks prior to travel, except for travel on October 8-10 (Columbus Day weekend). No need to book months in advance to get low fares in October. Most airlines do not announce sales or promotions, so you would need to look for the deals yourself.
(image)
Sites to check:
  • Google Flights. Searches most major airlines' prices on a calendar, but not Southwest.
  • Southwest fares by month. Enter your From and To cities, and choose "October" to see the cheapest days to travel.
For example, October airfare between the east and west coasts can be found for $275 to $300 round-trip. Between Texas and either Florida, the northeast, or California are $150 to $200 round-trip. Travel between cities within the northeast and Chicago for $75 to $150 round-trip. Airfare between cities on the west coast are $80 to $115 round-trip.
(image)
Beware that most airlines in the US charge for baggage, and some charge for carry-on luggage. These (hidden) baggage fees can raise the cost of travel by about $20 to $100 per person each-way. Southwest does not have baggage fees. Major airlines like American, Delta, Jet Blue, and United offer credit cards with the perk of free checked baggage on their airline, but those are only good deals if you fly those airlines a lot.
(image)
We recommend avoiding Frontier and Spirit because of their poor on-time records and hefty luggage AND carry-on fees. Even if they did have great customer service, we despise the price gauging through hidden fees. American Airlines has also treated us with horrible customer service, and we would rather pay more on other airlines than big risk travel woes.
(image)
Hotels rarely publish great rates in October to avoid tarnishing their brand, but could secretly give heavy discounts through Hotwire. Priceline too, but we had little success with them. There is a Hotels.com gift card deal giving $10 off of hotels, but can take a week to arrive.

Data losses caused by faulty drives are extremely frustrating experiences, so we suggest doing backups (data copied to 2 or more places) rather than relying on a single drive to store your important data.

Spirit.com - 99% off of Some Spirit Airlines Flights, code: 99PCT

Wed, 14 Sep 2016 21:15:00 GMT

Book airfare travel on a Tuesday or Wednesday between Sep 20 and Nov 16, and apply code 99PCT to get 99% off. Must browse "flight only" and you can use this direct link to search for 99% off fares.
(image)
Does not apply toward routes shown half way down this page.
(image)
Note that Spirit Airlines has a poor on-time record of 65% of flights on time. Also, beware of their hefty baggage fees, carry-on fees, and snack fees:
  • First checked bag costs about $30 at booking time, $40 during online check-in, or $50 at the airport.
  • Carry-on Bags are charged a fee. You are allowed one purse or pack limited to 16x14x12, which is about the size of an attache case or laptop bag capable of holding a 14" laptop. All other carry-on bags, including camera bags, laptop bags, backpacks, and suitcases are charged $35 at time of booking, $45 during online check-in, and a whopping $55 at the airport.
  • Assigned seats cost at least $5 per seat, up to $50 per seat. Prices go up depending on length of flight. The "Preferred" seats in the front cost $12 to $199 each.
  • Inflight snacks are $3 to $6.50 each
Most people travel with at least a change of clothes, a laptop, and a personal bag (like a purse) and would likely be charged a fee of at least $25 up to $120 each-way for the bags.
(image)
If you do not want to pay the carry-on or checked-bag fees, you will not be allowed to travel. Keep this in mind, since it can be misleading to see a "$9" each-way airfare which could actually cost you $100 or more after fees.

Amazon.com - 2-Pack of 10-Foot Lightning Cables for $11

Tue, 13 Sep 2016 21:00:00 GMT

Lightning cables power most Apple devices, including iPhone 5 and newer, iPad Mini, iPad 4th generation and newer, and iPad Air. We own the Sundix cables, and love them. The quality feels good, and the 10-foot length is very nice to have.
(image)
Also mentioning the Amoner above because it has similar positive reviews, and available in a variety of colors.
(image)
For comparison, Apple sells their own 6-foot cable for $29 (4 feet shorter than the above 10-foot cables).

Newegg.com - Cyberpower 1350VA Pure Sine Wave UPS $128 (expired: )

Tue, 13 Sep 2016 20:20:00 GMT

(expired)
(image)
Cyberpower 1350VA Pure Sine Wave UPS for $128 today. This and other similar model UPSs normally sell for around $155. We have two of the Cyberpower Pure Sine Wave UPSs, and believe they are some of the best UPSs for office use.
(image)
Computers, especially hard drives, rely on constant, clean power to function safely, and can be harmed when power spikes, brown-outs, or power failures occur. This is a good device to protect a computer and monitor from such power damage, and can also give battery time to your network gear and wifi router. This pure sine wave model should help protect better than a regular UPS, as shown in this video.

(image)
Beware of a hacking risk when using a wireless keyboard. As a Wired.com writer explains, a nearby hacker can tap into your wireless keyboard. A savvy hacker can:
  • Snoop what you are typing (passwords, email addresses, credit card numbers, etc), and
  • Inject keystrokes at a rate of 1,000 words per minute, which can hijack your computer with commands like uploading private information or opening a backdoor that the hacker can exploit later.
So if you are security conscious, please be aware of the risks of using wireless keyboards in an office building, apartment complex, or coffee shop where hackers could be close by.
(image)
Bluetooth devices are more secure since they use a pairing/approval access method, but are still susceptible to some hackers. We suggest never typing passwords and credit card numbers on any wireless keyboard.
