Walmart.com - Google Home Mini and $25 Walmart Credit for $29

Sun, 17 Dec 2017 06:00:00 GMT

Walmart and Google Express are giving $25 Walmart credit free when buying a Google Home or Google Home Mini.
  1. Link your Walmart account with Google Express. It should say "Walmart account linked."
  2. If not, link your Walmart account (or create a new Walmart account).
  3. Buy a Google Home Mini from Walmart.com in Chalk or Charcoal for $29 using your Walmart account. Have it shipped, or choose in-store pickup at a Walmart near you.
  4. When you get it home, plug in your Google Home Mini and follow the setup instructions using the Google Home app on an Apple or Android device.
  5. During setup, link the Mini to your Google account.
  6. Using your voice, ask the Mini, "hey google, what's my name?" If it responds correctly, your Home Mini is successfully linked.
  7. Wait a full day.
  8. Launch the Google Home app on your mobile device, and you should see a free $25 Walmart credit. It looks like this. Press "redeem offer" to add the credit to your Google Express account.
  9. Go to Express.Google.com, click on Walmart, shop for $25 worth of items, and have them delivered for free with no shipping costs.
Your $25 credit expires January 31.
(image)
The Google Home Mini normally sells for $49.
(image)
You can redeem this deal twice per household, if you want two Google Home Minis.
(image)
Limit one coupon per Google Express order. So, if your Google Express shows another promotion, like $15 off your first $55 order, you cannot combine that promo with your $25 credit.
(image)
Google Home is a direct competitor of Amazon Echo. Both can set timers, look things up, and tell you news & weather. We recommend Google Home for someone who uses a Chromecast and wants voice control, someone who wants voice control of their Nest thermostat or smart light switches, or wants to hear their Google Calendar. Google Home also plays music through Spotify, Pandora, Google Play Music, or a YouTube Red ($10/mo) account. Google Home can also distinguish between multiple people's voices in the house, each with their own Google accounts.
(image)
Can you do this deal twice?
According to the terms on the bottom of their page, "two coupons total per household." So, your home can get two Google Home Minis and two $25 shopping credits.
Can you gift the Google Home Mini and Keep the $25 Credit?
No. The person who links the Walmart-purchased Google Home Mini to their Google account will get the $25 credit.

Internet Providers Will Soon Change The Internet

Fri, 15 Dec 2017 06:00:00 GMT

Yesterday, the FCC, lead by Republican-commissioned Ajit Pai, voted to de-classify telecom companies from Title II status, giving extraordinary powers to cable and Internet providers and ending the core principles the Internet that have been around since the late 1980s. Instead of companies paying for the amount of bandwidth they use, cable providers will force companies to pay based on the content they provide. Consumers will wind up paying for the increased costs. What is important to know: Your home Internet service provider (ISP) can change the way you access sites, stream content, and use free services. They claim that is not what they will do, yet they spent millions of dollars successfully lobbying to get this very power. Comcast, for example, recently rescinded a promise to never alter Internet accessibility with fast-lane tolls, and is already hinting that fast-lanes (tolls levied on companies that deliver content to their users) will soon be a new source of revenue for them. Cost of doing business online could rise, stifling small companies and entrepreneurs. Cable companies, can now prioritize their own Internet sites and force others to pay tolls. States will lose the right to pass laws protecting consumers and small businesses from monopoly-controlled price gauging and unfair competition practices. This is the part that goes further than a "repeal" of the Net Neutrality. The (somewhat) good news: It will take at least 60 days for changes to take effect. Implementing such drastic changes to millions of customers takes time, plus there is a 60 day window where congress can override the action, and ISPs will not want to shake things up until then. Also, the FCC needs to publish the new rules, a procedural step that can take a few months. Plus, some states & small business groups are planning lawsuits which could delay the implementation by a few more months. No country has ever shifted away from Net Neutrality policies, so this is uncharted territory. We look at past behavior by telecom corporations and industry professionals to predict what they will do to the Internet. Probably will happen first: We believe streaming video services will be effected first. Netflix, already in long fights with Verizon and Comcast, will see their service slowed or be forced to pay tolls. Customers will see either reduced Netflix quality or higher prices. Note that Netflix had been kicking cable TV's butt, partly by low-cost offerings, and partly by offering true 4K video streaming at 4 times the video quality over the best cable TV offerings. YouTube, Twitter, and similar user-submitted video sharing sites are big targets for cable companies looking to tap into the ad revenue generated by those videos. Cable companies want to own and control content, as evidence by their recent acquisitions of NBC by Comcast and Yahoo, AOL, HuffPost and Flickr by Verizon. Expect to see cable companies invest in marketing campaigns, not new infrastructure, as they shift from infrastructure connection providers to gatekeepers of content. Probably will start happening at some point: As companies like Netflix, Amazon, and Skype are charged tolls to reach customers, "consumers will end up paying higher prices for essentially the same service," says Roger Kay, an independent technology and market analyst. Every site from online banks to workout apps could be hit with higher online costs, and pass those extra costs as surcharges consumers. Some protocol blocking may happen at some point. Most at-risk are per[...]

KleanKanteen.com - 12oz or 16oz Insulated Mug for $21

Tue, 12 Dec 2017 00:00:00 GMT

The Klean Kanteen Insulated Wide containers are our favorite drinking mugs for the car and office. It keeps coffee hot for about 6-8 hours, and ice water cold for about 24 hours. Its drinking hole prevents spills, the 18/8 stainless material is rust-resistant, and the plastic parts are BPA-free.

This is a popular gift item on our list, for the people we know who drink coffee or tea at their work desks.
(image)
Amazon sells these for about $21 to $30, depending on the size and color. Other stores, such as REI, sell them for about $30. Today, deals directly on the Klean Kanteen website save about $5 to $10 off the average prices: The 10% discount code (for signup) can be applied to the 12oz mug, but you lose free shipping since the total is below $20. However, you can apply the code and add something else, like a Loop Cap for $5.35 and get free shipping.

Orders placed by Dec 14 will be delivered by Christmas.

For example, our local Whole Foods recently started filling 16oz (or less) mugs with coffee for $1 each.

BestBuy.com - TCL 55" 4K 2160p Smart TV with HDR for $400

Sun, 10 Dec 2017 09:55:00 GMT

This is one of the best 55-inch TV deals today. A TCL 55-inch LED-backlit LCD 4K 2160p TV for $400 at BestBuy.com and Target stores. Normally $450 to $500. This is the "S405" model. Here's a user review of the TV, and a professional review. Other than the 55-inch screen size and 4K 2160p resolution, this screen has HDR (aka HDR10) is supported, according to the product specs, and Roku built-in to the TV (full 4K and HDR support). Run Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, HBO, Vudu, and any Roku app directly on your TV. When you view HDR compatible content (Netflix, YouTube, and Amazon do have HDR 4K content now), the contrast and brightness changes on parts of the screen to produce more life-like quality. With HDR, brights look brighter and darks look darker for a more natural look. This video explains people who upgraded from 1080p to 4K often did not notice much difference, until HDR was introduced. For more explanation, here's an article, and a video. Most other 55-inch TVs with HDR cost $600 and up. Note, Blu-Ray players and discs do not support HDR. New "Ultra Blu-Ray" supports HDR, but instead of buying new equipment, stream 4K HDR content from Netflix, Amazon, YouTube, and Vudu. However with Net Neutrality set to be eliminated in the US on Thursday, unfortunately, the future of 4K HDR streaming video may be in jeopardy for a lot of Americans. The FCC rules slated to replace Net Neutrality will enable cable companies to tamper with streaming video delivery as a way to generate revenue and unfairly compete for your TV viewing business by slowing competition. Corporate cable channels and companies will start prioritizing their own content over others, like Verizon did with Netflix before Net Neutrality. Most Americans have no choice who their home cable Internet company is, so switching to a different Internet provider is not even an option.[...]
