Multiple scalable background images

Fri, 14 Nov 2014 04:45:20 +0000

Recently I had a design provided that required a scalable image either side of the content area when the screen was wider then a specif point.
Since it has been a long time since my last blog post, I thought I would share my solution.

The image needed to scale so that width wise it fitted on screen and scaled up to a maximum size.
Afetr that maximum size the image no longer scales and just sits either side of the content.

An update on the CSS3 WD --- The display module

Sun, 28 Sep 2014 22:55:38 +0000

I imagine most of the web dev world hadn't realized that the display module of CSS3 was only in working draft status. There are some serious improvements and equally serious issues involved with this seemingly innocuous property.

I've taken the liberty of copying a letter to the whatwg and html5wg from the css3 wg. This is informative reading and well worth your time. Don't tl;dr the message.

Amazing milestone for a website

Thu, 14 Mar 2013 05:02:34 +0000

We have reached 10 years old, a fair age for any website. Actually the domain was registered in October 2002, the site started with the CSS Generator and I added the forum in March 2003. (image) So we are actually closer to 10.5 years old. I would like to thank all the people who have been involved, specially the moderators who keep this place running when I leave it in auto pilot mode.

Open Letter to Spammers

Sat, 08 Dec 2012 18:09:06 +0000

Hi there,

Before you post please consider something. We, that is the people that make tech forums like this one viable and useful for the community, keep them alive and provide a little of our experience, and time for free, really do not appreciate people taking advantage of them for what they think is possibly useful SEO gaming, we have to deal with the threads created, wasting our time and more importantly taking the time we may spend helping someone with a genuine need and chucking it away dealing with the utter drivel you post.

text-overflow

Wed, 26 Sep 2012 07:08:59 +0000

Text-overflow effects inline content when it overflows it's block container. Overflow can only occur if the block container has an overflow value of something other then visible and when white-space is set to no-wrap.

ellipsis: Renders an ellipsis character (U+2026) or three dots "..." to represent clipped inline content.

clip: Clips inline content that overflows, any extra characters will not be visible. Characters may be only partially rendered.

border-image

Tue, 25 Sep 2012 05:15:04 +0000

Border-image enables the use of images as borders. It overrides the border-style property which can act as a fallback if the image is unavailable or border-image in not supported.
Border-image is shorthand for the following properties with there initial values:
border-image-source: none;
border-image-slice: 100%;
border-image-width: 1;
border-image-outset: 0;
border-image-repeat: stretch;

The image can be sliced using 4 length values: top, right, bottom, left. Which creates a grid of 9 areas, the 4 corners, 4 sides and the center which is unused.

Text-shadow

Thu, 19 Jul 2012 01:06:45 +0000

A text-shadow is specified by suppling a horizontal length a vertical length a blur radius and color. The horizontal length specifies the X coordinate to place the shadow, positive values position the shadow to the right, negative to the left of the text. The vertical length specifies the Y coordinate with positive values placing the shadow below the text and negative above. The blur radius specifies how far to stretch the shadow, causes a blur effect and defaults to 0 if left out.

Multiple comma separated shadows can be applied with layered front to back, first shadow on top.

Clearfix and Browser support

Fri, 06 Jul 2012 19:14:48 +0000

When I first wrote about what's known as the Clearfix technique in 2004, I knew it was going to be useful. It was to solve a problem that previously required us to add extra markup to the page. I had no idea it would still be used in one of it's many forms in most CMS and a large percentage of all websites 8 years later.

Browsers have come a long way since then, most of the browser versions we had to support are not even thought of these days.
