Groyne Art Pool

The hitherto unsung beauty of our elderly sea defences. Weatherbeaten wood, rusting bolts, seaweed, even the occasional mollusc or barnacle! Note: this group is for groynes, not groins, so no "adult-only" content please. http://www.flickr.com/

Halfway from the shelter of Balma (Piedmont)
We started with 900 meters above sea level to reach 1,980 meters. The photo backpack is sometimes really heavy!
Next week will reach the top of Monte Robinet 2,679 m (definitely my backpack will be filled in order to be much lighter.)

A simple image from Paignton, not my favourite place on the South Devon coast. It appears to be home to the traditional English seaside holiday - the pier, amusements, candyfloss, kiss-me-quick hats. I found the concrete sea defences amongst the more appealing things to photograph. I was drawn to the pattern of the wet sand and the shapes formed by the water channels. The monochrome treatment emphasises the structure

National Trust carpark was locked this morning, so I had to park up at 12 arches and walk across the boardwalk leading through Murlough Nature Reserve. Just made it in time before the sun breached the horizon. Taken using LEE filters landscape polariser and 1.2 very hard grad filter.

Teignmouth Groynes

I seem to have more images of groynes from Teignmouth than anything else. I must stress that this is not because Teignmouth is an uninteresting place - far from it. It has a lot of charm and I look forward to returning. In the meantime, a monochrome groyne study, complete with seagull. I tried to follow the advice of Jeff Ascough, following his presentation at the Photography Show. For digital monochrome images to convey the same emotion as film they need a lot of contrast and lots of grain. The vignetting and uneven border also help with this film-like authenticity. I know of at least one club judge who would hate this!
