You can be philanthropic on a budget.Between 70 and 90 percent of all U.S. households donate to charity in a given year, and the typical household’s annual gifts add up to between two and three thousand dollars, according to The Philanthrophy Roundtable.
Set your financial goals in three distinct categories. Start with taking care of your family’s basic financial needs which could include becoming debt free, funding an emergency savings account and investing for retirement. Once you are on track to fund the basics, look to wants and wishes.
Wants may be goals such as an annual family vacation, a special boat or car, oryour children’s education.
Wishes can include charitable giving.
Simply adding charitable contributions to your annual budget and in your overall financial plan, encourages you to be pro-active with your giving.
With this step, you now enter the ranks of the philanthropists, no matter the amount you give.
Setting goals forphilanthropycan be a win-win for your finances and your favorite charity. Work your budget backwards: pay yourself and your charity first. Start by carving out funds to pad your emergency fund, pay off consumer debt, and add to your retirement fund.
Then set a specific dollar amount or percentage of income for charitable intentions.
If you want something done, automate it! You can set up an automatic monthly payment to your charity directly from your bank account each month. Better yet, give through payroll deduction.
Pool your charitable gifts together with family members or like-minded friends. ADonor Advised Fundcan work well for this as you can make a donation and get an immediate tax benefit but don't have to make a recommendation for a grant to a charity until a later time.
As the saying goes, “You can’t take it with you.” When you’re gone, you won’t need your funds and if your dependents don’t eithe[...]

Harvest’s energy garden in Orlando uses anaerobic digestion to turn organic waste into clean energy and natural fertilizers.
Gary Aguinaga, chief operating officer of Harvest’s energy business, is pictured overlooking the company’s energy garden in Orlando.
Organic waste material, delivered from Orlando-area theme parks, restaurants, hotels and businesses, is mixed together in an enclosed receiving hall.
A clamshell-like bucket scoops up organic materials and drops them into a pre-treatment system, removing packaging and contaminants.
Fats, oils and grease (FOG) get added to the slurry of organic materials, boosting the biogas yield during the anaerobic digestion process.
Pipes connect the flow of materials through Harvest’s energy garden, as organic waste is turned into biogas, clean energy and natural fertilizer.

It was literally forgettable--none of the partners or customers who spoke with FORBES could remember what it was. In less than a year, however, the previously unremarkable space has given hope to partners, a home to a partner who lost one, and renewed vigor to a company veteran. Most importantly, it’s given a neighborhood a taste of development, and a company a taste of the benefits of partnering with oft-overlooked communities.
